Eileen LaCario is the Founding Member and Vice President of Broadway In Chicago which brings over one million people into the Chicago theatre district each year. Eileen has launched six theatres in Chicago including Royal George, Halsted Theatre Center, Cadillac Palace, Oriental, Bank of America Theatres and, most recently, the Broadway Playhouse. Eileen served on Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Arts and Culture Transition Team and is past chair of the League of Chicago Theatres. She now serves on the City of Chicago Cultural Advisory Council and Choose Chicago’s Cultural Tourism Commission. Doug Peck, Music Director, has won five Jeff Awards (Porgy and Bess; Caroline, or Change; Carousel; Fiorello;Man of La Mancha) and two After Dark Awards (Guys and Dolls, Hello Again). New musicals are, of course, one of The Old Globe’s specialties, and the upcoming season is filled with exactly the kind of work the Globe does best. In this very theatre, you’ll have a chance to see a revival of Steve Martin’s hilarious Picasso at the Lapin Agile; the exciting backstage drama Red Velvet; and the imaginative, fable- like musical The Old Man and The Old Moon. And of course, we’re bringing back The Grinch for its 19th year! Across the plaza in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, we hope you’ll join us for work by some of the most exciting voices in the American theatre today: award-winning actor/ songwriter Benjamin Scheuer (The Lion), Globe newcomer Nick Gandiello (The Blameless), the powerful and trenchant Dominique Morisseau (Skeleton Crew), and the ingenious Fiasco Theater, with their own particular spin on Molière’s classic The Imaginary Invalid. Featuring fresh new soundtracks by Tom Nazziola, a prolific composer and conductor best known for his work on film, television and musicals, Silent Sherlock will astound and entertain audiences at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie this March. Nazziola will lead the Chicago Philharmonic ensemble in three new film scores to accompany a live screening of movies from the golden age of silent film in the 1920s. Headlining the program is Sherlock Jr., starring perhaps the greatest comedic genius of the 20th century, Buster Keaton. Hilarious hijinks ensue as Keaton attempts to impress his sweetheart, solve a mystery, and save the day. Accompanying spectacular cinematography is a colorful palette of violin, piano, bass, and winds painted with Nazziola’s masterful hand. Silent Sherlock also features the short Sure-Locked Homes with legendary cartoon character Felix the Cat and Fadeaway, at the time a revolutionary blend of animation and live action, with vividly entertaining Koko the Clown. Today, we will be following the paths of the chaconne, passacaglia and other ostinato rhythms – with origins similar to the sarabande – as they spread across Europe during the 17th century. With this program that we are calling Groove!, we present those intoxicating rhythms in the fashion and flavor of the different countries where they gained popularity. The great European composers wrote masterpieces using the rhythms of these ancient dances to create immortal pieces of art, but their weight and significance is such that we tend to forget where their origins lie. Bach, Couperin, and Purcell – to name only a few – wrote music for highly sophisticated institutions. Still, through these dance rhythms, they were searching for something similar to what the more ancient civilizations had been striving to attain: a connection to the spiritual world.
