FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE KIRK COUSINS NAMED NFC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE MONTH Eagan, Minn. (October 31, 2019) – Vikings QB Kirk Cousins has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Month for the month of October. Cousins finished the month 91-of-116 (78.4%) for 1,262 yards, 10 touchdowns, one interception and a passer rating of 137.1 while leading the Vikings to a perfect 4-0 record. The Michigan State graduate’s 78.4 completion percentage led the NFL, while his 10 passing touchdowns tied for the league lead. His 137.1 passer rating in October marked the second-highest passer rating in any month in NFL history (minimum 100 attempts), trailing only Peyton Manning’s 138.0 passer rating in September of 2013. In Weeks 5-7, the Holland, Michigan, native became the first quarterback in NFL history to post at least 300 passing yards and a passer rating of 130.0 or higher in three consecutive games. The eighth-year veteran helped the Vikings offense record 1,875 yards of total offense in four October games, the second-highest yardage total in any four-game span in franchise history (1,968 yards in Weeks 2-6 of the 2004 season). The award marks the third time that Cousins has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Month, having received the award in November of 2016 and December of 2015 while playing for the Washington Redskins. He is the 10th player in Vikings history to receive the award, and first under first-year offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski. Successful college prospects, many who are under classmen fail to go on and have the same success as professionals. There are the “cant- miss” prospects who do go one to become Pro Bowl QB’s, but just as many are total busts. It would appear as if the selection is nothing more than a crap-shoot. Drafting is all about priorities and alternatives. Given that, there must be a way to quantify all of the stats and “gut feelings” of players to select a future NFL star. The description of the NFL draft problem would appear to be a perfect candidate for a complex ratings model using the SuperDecisions software. Analyzing the problem further lead us to our stated goal: Optimize a high selection in the NFL draft by drafting a solid contributor to your team, if not a Pro-Bowl caliber player while at the same time avoiding the selection of a player who can set your franchise back years. This is a critical decision that does not leave much room for error. To achieve our goal, thorough research of all the criteria that would need to be considered when drafting a QB would need to be analyzed. This process led us to nine top level criteria: 1 1. The 2019 season had it all. Youth and success at the quarterback position highlighted the 2019 regular season as 208 games featured at least one starting quarterback under the age of 27, the most in a single season in NFL history. In total, quarterbacks under the age of 27 started 287 games and recorded 144 wins in those starts this season, both the highest single-season totals since 1970. Three quarterbacks under the age of 25 – Baltimore’s LAMAR JACKSON (2018 NFL Draft), Kansas City’s PATRICK MAHOMES (2017 NFL Draft) and Houston’s DESHAUN WATSON (2017 NFL Draft) – have led their respective teams to division titles in each of the past two seasons. Competitiveness was a constant theme throughout the regular season as 68 percent of games (174 of 256) were within one score (eight points) in the fourth quarter, tied for the fifth-most such games in a single season in NFL history, while 52.3 percent of games (134 of 256) were decided by eight-or-fewer points, also tied for the fifth-most such games in single season in league annals. Additionally, 57 games saw a team come back to win or tie after trailing in the fourth quarter. Week 17 came down to the wire, as two playoff spots and two divisions titles – the NFC East and NFC West – were decided on the final day of the season.
