This goes down better on sunny summer evenings, and can be done Apr-Oct. I will also consider doing “one-off” lectures to order. If you’d appreciate a trip out why not bring your group to a talk at the nursery. We can accommodate up to 50 (just) and provide tea and scones/cake. Most talks can be presented without slides which works better in daytime. Tea + cake + talk £6.50 a head. Fee £250 plus cost of fuel for a lecture of about an hour. (For full sessions my charge is £350 for a morning or an afternoon, £550 for a full day.) Sorry about the cost but it is designed to put people off so that I have some time to myself! I bring my own projection equipment but I will need a screen or suitable wall. I can bring plants for sale. If you do decide to book, can you please let me know the address of the venue (postcode, street name and number - if any - and village/suburb)? Remote control/autofocus projector, screen, projector stand and extension leads can be provided. For 2014/2015 the fee for each lecture is £70-£140 (depending on distance and time

Unusual plants can also be brought for sale. As a new feature some talks can reduced in length so that two topics can be presented in the same lecture, perhaps useful for more specialised talks, since not everyone is interested in snowdrops.

Bookings are now being taken for 2016-2017. Incidentally, if available, I am always willing to give talks to local groups at short notice should an existing speaker have to cancel.

Visits for gardening clubs can also be arranged to the garden at Fairview throughout the year on weekends or in the evening. Tea, coffee and homemade cakes can be included all for £4 per person.

Pavord Anna [email protected] Sunnyside Farm, Loscombe, Dorset. DT6 3TL Tel: 01308 488169 Gardening correspondent for The Independent; author, associate editor for Gardens Illustrated; former chairman of Gardens Panel of the National Trust; member Parks and Gardens Panel of English Heritage. 1. THE TULIP: The tulip is the sexiest, most capricious, the most various, subtle, powerful and intriguing flower on earth. From its wild home in the Asian steppes, the tulip emerged to conquer the world. This lecture tells its story. 2. BULBS FOR ALL SEASONS: Bulbs mark the seasons in a garden more beautifully than any other kind of plant. By choosing carefully you can use them to enliven the garden in summer and autumn, as well as spring. Anna Pavord reveals some of her favourites. 3. THE NAMING OF NAMES: We take for granted the fact that plants have names. But who did all the naming and how did they sort it out? Follow Anna Pavord on an adventure through history - a two thousand year search for the rules of nature's game. 4. PLANTING AN IMPRESSION: Gardens and flowers were an ever-present theme for Impressionist painters such as Monet, Pissarro, Renoir and Gustave Caillebotte. Looking at their paintings, what can we learn about the Impressionist’s gardens and their favourite flowers? 5. PLANT PARTNERS: There has never been a time when gardeners have had more plants to play with. But just having them is not enough. In this talk, Anna Pavord talks about some star garden plants and suggests a supporting cast to put with them in the garden. 6. GARDEN STYLE: New gardeners are often told that the first step in making a garden is to draw a plan. Not so. The first thing is to decide on the mood of the garden: formal, wild, cottage-garden or exotic. Like architecture and fashion, gardening embraces different and distinctive styles. In this talk, Anna Pavord provides a fresh perspective on garden design and style. 7. TULIPS IN THE GARDEN: How to choose the best tulips and how to use them to greatest effect in the garden OR 8. TULIPA SYLVESTRIS AND FRIENDS: Anna Pavord looks at some of the species in the large family of tulips and suggests ways to use them to best effect in the garden. 9. WHY GARDEN? Why do we garden? What are our gardens for? In our gardens, perhaps, we make the kind of world we wished we lived in. Some garden for profit. Others collect plants. A few still garden to feed themselves. Above all, we garden to make something we believe to be beautiful. 10. HIDCOTE AND THE EDWARDIAN GARDEN: Hidcote is one of England's most famous gardens. This lecture explores how it was made in the early years of this century and what other garden makers influenced its creator, Lawrence Johnston 11. POTAGERS, PUMPKINS AND PEARS: A new look at the kitchen garden and ways of making it as beautiful as it is useful 12. SEASONAL PLANTING: It is not difficult to make a garden sing in spring, but what then? Anna Pavord suggests some ways to keep a garden fully furnished through all four seasons. 13. GARDENS OF THE MIND: These are so much easier to bring into bloom than the real things, attacked as they

30

HPS REGISTER OF LECTURERS July 2021

are by slugs and unnerving diseases. In this talk Anna Pavord explores some literary gardens, touring with Wodehouse round Blandings Castle and with George Eliot through a perfect kitchen garden (no pictures) 14. PAINTED PLANTS: Bombarded with pictures of plants, as we are now, we can scarcely imagine a time when there weren't any. Anna Pavord traces the development of botanical painting from the earliest known images of the 6thC to the modern day. 15. YIN AND YANG: An introduction to Chinese gardens 16. ON THE TRAIL OF LILY REGALE: How three plant hunters – Robert Fortune, George Sherriff and ‘Chinese’ Wilson transformed our gardens for ever 17. THE SPRING GARDEN: It is impossible to celebrate spring without bulbs. Anna Pavord explores some of the ways they can be used in a spring garden and suggests suitable companions. 18. BULBS: BEYOND THE BIG THREE; Daffodils, tulips and crocus are the big players in a spring garden. But there are plenty of other bulbs you can use in spring and to extend the season beyond. Anna Pavord discusses some of her favourites 19. SUMMER BULBS: It is easy to forget, after the explosion of bulbs in a spring garden, that there are plenty more treats to come. Anna Pavord looks at some of the best of the summer bulbs, including alliums, lilies and eucomis. 20. THE CURIOUS GARDENER: My gardening life and the important things I have learned. 21. THE FLOWERING OF TUSCANY: At the beginning of the 20thC, there were more than 40,000 English-speaking expatriates in Florence. They had all come to re-invent themselves in some way and an important part of that process was to restore a garden, preferably one with Medici connections. The Actons at La Pietra, the Berensons at I Tatti, Lady Sybil Cutting at Villa Medici were all part of an extraordinary gardening web, much of it woven by the brilliant, enigmatic young designer Cecil Pinsent. He worked for most of them, as well as many other influential expatriates. This lecture tells their story. 22. REPTON AND THE ENGLISH COUNTRY GARDEN. Humphry Repton brought back into the Regency garden the flowers and bowers, the trellised nooks and terraces banished by his predecessor, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Anna Pavord looks at Repton’s astonishing career with a special focus on the work he did for the Duke of Bedford at Endsleigh, a Repton masterpiece. 23. WILLIAM COBBETT’S ARCADIA. William Cobbett was a man of strong opinions, which makes him an excellent companion for the journeys he took through England in the 1820s. He later published accounts of his travels in his vivid Rural Rides. Energetic, endlessly curious, splenetic, endearing in his lack of self-doubt, Cobbett rode with the eyes of a farmer. He’s one of the stars of Anna Pavord’s book Landskipping which considers the many different ways we can respond to landscape. 24. BEYOND THE BORDER. Much thought and organisation goes into arranging a good flower border, but there are other places to consider. Anna Pavord considers plants to give structure in a garden and gives some ideas on ways to furnish both the shadiest and the driest, sunniest places in your plot. 25. LANDSKIPPING. This talk, based on Anna Pavord’s new book Landskipping, is a celebration of our landscape, its iridescent beauty and its potential to comfort, awe and mesmerise us. Through the eyes of painters, agricultural reformers and others, it explores the different ways in which we have, through the ages, responded to the land. Any distance. £600 + mileage at 40p per mile up to a maximum of £100

He has travelled widely studying plants in the wild, in particular the flora of South Africa. In 1992 he became a copresenter on BBC Gardeners World working for three years alongside Geoff Hamilton. In 1998 he was appointed South African plant consultant to the Eden Project in 2002 he became a Fellow of the Institute of Horticulture. He is currently responsible for developing, and curating the University of Bristol Botanic Garden, the first new university botanic garden in Britain for over forty years. A former member of the RHS Tender and Ornamental Plant Committee and now member of the RHS Herb Advisory Group, he has judged at many RHS shows including Chelsea. 1. The Relocation and Development of the new University of Bristol Botanic Garden. This is an exciting project that has seen the development of the first new University Botanic Garden in the UK for 30 years. It explores the work of botanic gardens, the planning, preparation and building of this new botanic garden, which has involved the propagation and transplanting of over 12,000 plants and has created a garden with a strong evolutionary theme. 2. The Evolution of Flowers. Our gardens are full of them, we would starve without the fruits they yield, yet few gardeners give a second thought as to when & how they first evolved into such a diverse range of plants. The many and varied methods by which flowers attract pollinators will be introduced and new research which shows that pollinators are not just attracted by colour and nectar. 3. Voyages of the Beagle. Charles Darwin’s epic voyage of discovery aboard the Beagle helped change the way we view the natural world. Darwin’s voyage will be charted including the habitats he travelled through and the plants that he came across en-route. 4. Flora of the Western Cape of South Africa. The Western Cape has the greatest level of plant diversity in the world. This lecture reviews many of the habitats & the unique plants that grow there; it will focus on some of the gardens to be found and the projects they are involved in to help protect the indigenous flora& help previously disadvantaged people lead more sustainable lives. 5. Making the most of your Garden's Microclimates. Every garden has small variations of local climate, so called ‘microclimates’. This lecture explores garden microclimates & suggests how these can be manipulated to create better growing conditions for a wider more diverse range of plants. 6. Japanese Gardens, Historic Gardens of Tokyo, Nara & Kyoto. Over a thousand years of gardening traditions have created a unique garden style that is far removed from our western tastes in garden design and the choice of plants. Looking at the history & evolution of Japanese gardening styles & highlights some of the key features & links between gardens & Japanese culture. 7. From Namaqualand to Namibia. The seasonal floral display in Namaqualand is one of the most spectacular on earth. This lecture explores the fascinating diversity of this area from the lush mountain slopes to the carpets of annual flowers and rocky landscapes filled with ‘Living Stones’. 150 miles (longer by special arrangement). £130 if fewer than 75 people in the audience; £150 if over 80 people + travel expenses 45p per mile.
