Among the many pictures of young Californians portrayed sailing, skiing, horse-riding, and surfing, one photograph stood out. Set in Santa Monica’s famous “Muscle Beach” playground, it pictured five bodybuilders wearing tight briefs and showing off their bulging biceps. Despite their obvious efforts to look good, the five men were mocked in the accompanying text for “carrying the body cult from the sublime to the absurd.” Clearly, the Life magazine journalists were unimpressed by such a display. As was Charles Flynn, a reader from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, who felt compelled to send a photograph, printed in the next issue’s Letters to the Editor, to “show.. -

It critically engages with the “South African Surfing History Archive”, collected in the course of research, by focusing on two inter-related themes in contributing to a critical sports historiography in southern Africa. The first is how surfing in South Africa has come to be considered a white, male sport. The second is whether surfing is political. In addressing these topics the study considers the double whiteness of the Californian influences that shaped local surfing culture at “whites only” beaches during apartheid. The racialised nature of the sport can be found in the emergence of an amateur national surfing association in the mid-1960s and consolidated during the professionalisation of the sport in the mid-1970s. -

Signature iii Surfer Exploration and Migration: North American Surfers in Mexico, El Salvador and Nicaragua Thesis by Walter Blair Tom ABSTRACT The history of North American surf culture's dispersion into three regions, as in the cases of Mexico, El Salvador and Nicaragua, offers an invaluable perspective into social, cultural and economic relationships, the transnationalism of tourists and migrants, and considers various surfers' identities and culture, lifestyle migrations, and coastal development. This thesis explores these cultural encounters and exchanges in order to develop an understanding of surfing's impact and relationship to coastal regions in developing countries in the past fifty years. The global surf community's relationship with surf colonies is also examined using popular culture and surfers as actors in local, national and global affairs. A narrative of surfing subculture evolution is discussed, revealing the ecosystem of relationships, and historical relevance and impacts of North American surfers in the coastal regions of Mexico, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. -

The Rhetoric of Surf: A Lexical and Archetypal Migration of Los Angeles Counterculture into Popular Culture Steve Florian [Y]oung men in trunks, and young girls in little more, with bronzed, unselfconscious bodies . they seemed to walk along the rim of the world as though they and their kind alone inhabited it . and they turn into precursors of a new race not yet seen on the earth: of men and women without age, beautiful as gods and goddesses, with the minds of infants. William Faulkner, Golden Land For William Faulkner, the “young . bronzed, unselfconscious bodies” lying on the beach and dipping in the surf epitomized his vision of the golden land of Los Angeles. While Los Angeles is a hub for the production of culture—most notably Hollywood—it is also historically responsible for producing much of both the verbal and visual aspects of surf culture. The epicenter for this production exists on the edge of Los Angeles County in the beach community of Malibu. From the surfers who inhabit Malibu’s Surfrider Beach, to the Hollywood productions that film surf-themed movies, to the novels that depict the world of Gidget and Moondoggie, these notions of beach life have permeated the worlds far beyond this idyllic beachside locale. In this essay I will argue that the Hollywood generated surf movies as well as surfing texts have inculcated language and images particular to the surfing culture of the 1950s, through the 1970s, into the zeitgeist of popular culture, reaching its peak in the 1980s. The semantic shift of language to suit the purpose of the culture industry, as well as the burgeoning surf industry, is generated in its purest form by the surfers that are active in the culture of surfing: both industries benefit from the commodification of selling surf culture and the beach-as-a-lifestyle to the uninitiated masses. -
