Christ Child Society, DC Annual Report 2013-2014 the Christ Child Society 5101 Wisconsin Avenue, N.W Christ Child Society, DC Annual Report 2013-2014 The Christ Child Society 5101 Wisconsin Avenue, N.W. Suite 304 Washington, D.C. 20016 www.christchilddc.org 202-966-9250 About Us The Christ Child Society is a membership based non profit, serving the needs of children in the DC area. The foundation of our Society is our members, who not only set the direction for our programs, but lend their time, talent, and treasure to execute that vision. Members of the Christ Child Society come from across the DC met- ro area. Mostly women, our members range in age from early 20’s to early 90’s. The membership is organized into smaller groups called guilds. These guilds often share a common interest such as neighborhood, age, or history. The guild structure is a great way to make friends and network while supporting the work of The Society. Founded over 125 years ago by Mary Virginia Merrick, The Society retains much of the same mission and structure as it did in the beginning. The spirit of Mary Virginia Merrick is alive in our work with children. While steeped in tradition, we are committed to looking ahead and changing to meet the evolving needs of children in our area. Membership in this Society has only one requirement– a passion for our mission to meet the needs of children. Mary Virginia Merrick Our founder At an early age, Mary Virginia Merrick, the Christ Child Society’s founder, aspired to, “take care of all the little children who had no one to take care of them.” But a fall at age 14 left her partially para- lyzed, confined to a bed or wheelchair. Despite her disability, she devoted herself to taking care of children in need. At age 18, learning of a mother who had no clothing for her expected child, Mary gathered a group of friends to sew a lay- ette, a complete set of clothing and accessories for the newborn. A young boy’s request for a red wagon in a letter to the Christ Child – whom Mary described as “the Giver of all good things” – was the beginning of a tradition of Christmas gifts to families who other- wise would have nothing. In 1887, the group became the Christ Child Society. Mary Virginia Merrick’s enthusiasm and dedication inspired many individuals to join her in providing a number of programs for desti- tute children in the Nation’s Capital. They included a camp for children to enjoy a respite from city heat. The Merrick Boys Club was established in a remodeled stable near the US Capitol. A convalescent home for sick children and a resi- dential care facility for emotionally disturbed youngsters became part of the Society’s work. All of these pro- grams have changed and evolved over the years to meet contemporary demands. “Miss Mary,” as she was known to her friends and the thousands of children she helped during her lifetime, was honored by church and civic leaders for her dedication to serving the Christ Child by serving His children. On April 2, 2003, the Congregation for the Cause of Saints in Rome declared Mary Virginia Merrick a Servant of God. Miss Mary’s words, “Nothing is ever too much to do for a child,” continue to be brought to life today. The Christ Child Layette Program, begun by “Miss Mary” in 1884, continues to provide layettes to needy mothers and their babies. The School Counseling Program provides mental health services to inner-city Catholic school children and their families. Volunteer tutors help children learn to read and hundreds of children go to school in new uniforms provided by the DC Chapter. Proceeds from the sale of the camp were used to build a recrea- tion center in Southeast Washington. Named “The Mary Virginia Merrick Center,” its goal is to enhance the recreational and social experiences of the area’s at-risk youth through sports, art, music and other organized programs. The DC Chapter now runs programs for girls and their families at the Merrick Center. From the President Dear Members: The success continued in our 126th year of serving children in the Washington area. As you saw in our summer newsletter, our members have been very busy donating their time and talents for a number of worthy projects on behalf of the Christ Child Society. This edition of our Annual Report highlights you and your generous donations that enabled us to continue our programs during this past year (2013-2014). As we launch the 127th year, I thank you for your generosity and support. Warmest regards, Tricia Boland Jones From the Executive Director Dear Members and Friends, Thanks to your support, the Christ Child Society of Washington DC had a very successful 2013-2014 fiscal year. In this report you will find the names of those who supported us last year with their leadership, ideas, time and generous donations. We could not continue to meet our mission of providing for the material, emotional and educational needs of children with- out you. Thank you. Also, in this Annual Report you will be introduced to our newly restructured programs. The Society has refocused programmatically in three areas (the Big Three): The Beloved Babies Layette Program; The Girls on the Rise Empowerment Program (at the Merrick Center); and the Student Success Program (which includes School Counseling, Tutoring and Adopt a School). You will read about the over 5,000 children and families whose lives you have touched through your volunteerism and financial support of these programs. We thank you for your commitment to the children and families and to the vision of Mary Virginia Merrick who began this organization more than 125 years ago. Her words "Personal contact with the poor is the element of true charity,” inspire us today. Thank you for playing a part in that ser- vice. NATIVITY OF OUR LORD / CHRISTMAS EVE DECEMBER 24, 2020 DECEMBER 24, 2020 NATIVITY OF OUR LORD I: CHRISTMAS EVE In winter’s deepest night, we welcome the light of the Christ child. Isaiah declares that the light of the long-promised king will illumine the world and bring endless peace and justice. Paul reminds us that the grace of God through Jesus Christ brings salvation to all people. The angels declare that Jesus’ birth is good and joyful news for everyone, including lowly shepherds. Filled with the light that shines in our lives, we go forth to share the light of Christ with the whole world. PRELUDE GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, Love from the beginning, Word made flesh, Breath of heaven. Amen. Let us confess our sinfulness before God and one another, trusting in God’s endless mercy and love. Merciful God, we confess that we are not perfect. We have said and done things we regret. We have tried to earn your redeeming grace, while denying it to others. We have resisted your call to be your voice in the world.

We zouden allemaal iets moeten leren van Eurosong. Wist je trouwens dat democratie ontstaan is doordat iedereen mag stemmen op zijn favoriete artiest bij Eurosong? Maar er is nog progressie mogelijk.

  • Wish You Happy Feast of Epiphany
WISH YOU HAPPY FEAST OF EPIPHANY Receiving than Giving: The most foundational truth of the Christian life can be located in today’s gospel of the Epiphany. when we focus on the wise men, the theme of the gospel is about searching, finding, and the giving of gifts. These themes, however, are not the deepest truth of today’s feast. To find that truth we must not look at what the wise men do, but at what Jesus does. And what does Jesus do? He receives the gifts that the wise men offer. This action is arguably the first action of Jesus ever recorded in the gospels: to accept the gifts that are given. Our faith is not primarily about what we do, but rather about what God does. God has made us and saved us. God’s actions are the actions that are at the heart of the gospel. Being a Christian is not about what we do, but what we accept; it is not about giving but about receiving. So what is it that we are called to receive? The three gifts help here—gold, frankincense, myrrh—value, mystery, pain. The first gift is the gift of gold, a gift of great value and worth. It points to the value and worth of our own lives. We are persons of great worth. God has made us so. God has instilled in us a dignity that is a part of who we are. That dignity is nothing we can earn and nothing that we can lose by failure or sin.

A Very Special Child Luke 2:22-24; Luke 2:25-32; Luke 2:36-40 December 30, 2018 – First Sunday in Christmastide Luke 2:22-24 - The Dedication of Jesus Friends, our reading for today, from the second chapter of Luke are often overlooked by the church. In fact, they are not included in the Common Ecumenical Lectionary, that list of suggested scriptures for all Christian Churches to follow. But I believe these are wonderfully special readings. Our first reading sets the stage. We’re told that Mary and Joseph took the baby to the Jerusalem temple for their purification, as was prescribed by Jewish law. There are those who would claim that Luke is a “Gentile gospel,” that Luke was a Gentile; and the Gospel was written for Gentiles. Perhaps those who would claim that have never read the second chapter; and the emphasis on Jewish law and the emphasis on the redemption of Jerusalem. So what is the Jewish law to which Luke refers? It’s from the twelfth chapter of Leviticus. You may have noticed that Luke states, “The time had come from their purification.” Two things will happen at the temple somewhat simultaneously. First, Mary will undergo a ritual purification after childbirth; and second, Jesus will be dedicated to the Lord, as the scripture says: “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord.” Now there’s a key point here. Leviticus says the mother should give a lamb for the dedication and a young pigeon or turtledove for her purification; but, if the woman cannot afford a lamb, she can offer two pigeons or turtledoves instead.

  • CA Students Urge Assembly Members to Pass AB
May 26, 2021 The Honorable Members of the California State Assembly State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: Thousands of CA Public School Students Strongly Urge Support for AB 101 Dear Members of the Assembly, We are a coalition of California high school and college students known as Teach Our History California. Made up of the youth organizations Diversify Our Narrative and GENup, we represent 10,000 youth leaders from across the State fighting for change. Our mission is to ensure that students across California high schools have meaningful opportunities to engage with the vast, diverse, and rich histories of people of color; and thus, we are in deep support of AB101 which will require high schools to provide ethnic studies starting in academic year 2025-26 and students to take at least one semester of an A-G approved ethnic studies course to graduate starting in 2029-30. Our original petition made in support of AB331, linked here, was signed by over 26,000 CA students and adult allies in support of passing Ethnic Studies. Please see appended to this letter our letter in support of AB331, which lists the names of all our original petition supporters. We know AB101 has the capacity to have an immense positive impact on student education, but also on student lives as a whole. For many students, our communities continue to be systematically excluded from narratives presented to us in our classrooms. By passing AB101, we can change the precedent of exclusion and allow millions of students to learn the histories of their peoples.
