    © Lonely Planet Publications 354 Champagne CHAMPAGNE CHAMPAGNE Known in Roman times as Campania, meaning ‘plain’, Champagne is a largely agricultural region and is celebrated around the world for the sparkling wines that have been produced here for more than three centuries. According to French law, only bubbly originating from this region – grown in designated areas (now being expanded to meet growing demand), then aged and bottled according to the strictest of rules – can be labelled as Champagne. The production of this prestigious sparkling wine takes place mainly in two départements: Marne, whose metropolis is the ‘Coronation City’ of Reims, and the less prestigious (though increasingly respected) Aube, whose préfecture (departmental capital) is the ancient and picturesque city of Troyes, home to several exceptional museums and entire streets lined with half-timbered houses. The town of Épernay, 30km to the south of Reims, is the de facto capital of Champagne (the drink, that is) and is the best place to head for dégustation (tasting session). The Champagne Route wends its way through the region’s diverse vineyards, taking visitors from one picturesque – and prosperous – wine-growing village to the next. A number of name-brand maisons (literally ‘houses’, meaning Champagne producers) have achieved international renown, but much of the region’s liquid gold is made by almost 5000 small- scale vignerons (wine makers) in 320-odd villages, many of whose family-run facilities welcome visitors. Elle emprunte les GR®141 (ancienne voie romaine Via Campaniensis) et le GR®14, ce qui rend son tracé relativement facile. Pas de retour au point de départ. On laisse les voitures à la gare d'Avenay-Val-d'Or et on y retourne en TER depuis Rilly-la-Montagne. Bien qu'on emprunte le chemin de Compostelle, on y est divinement tranquille. En semaine à part un ou deux forestiers, vous ne croiserez que des chevreuils. He ran a farm with his wife Francoise Bagnost for many years. His son Richard, wanted to get involved in wine, so he planted the family’s first vines in Pierry and Moussy in 1965. He sold his first bottles in 1969 thanks to the cooperative of Pierry, whose president is none other than his father-in-law Jean Bagnost. RICHARD SÉLÈQUE Richard SELEQUE, Jean-Marc's father began producing his own champagne in the 1970s. He outfitted his operation with a press, tanks, barrels, etc. Wishing to master all the stages of champagne production, he even bought his own bottling and disgorging production line. Après Ambonnay et Louvois, c’est Tours sur Marne qui a marqué son accord, et mon petit doigt me dit que Bouzy et Bisseuil ne tarderont pas à se manifester à leur tour. Notre communauté de communes comptera alors environ 15 000 habitants, de quoi nous donner encore plus de poids, s’il en était besoin, afin de développer notre bassin économique. Il est clair que nos 17 communes ont beaucoup de points communs et auront plaisir à collaborer afin que chacune d’entre elles s’y retrouve à travers les différentes compétences de notre collectivité. Nous vous informerons des discussions qui sont d’ores et déjà engagées et des réper- cussions que cela pourra avoir. Rappelons pour Champillon que la CCGVM a participé pour 20 % aux dépenses des travaux de la traverse du village en finançant l’ensemble des réseaux. Et que sans mutualisation, nos petites communes ne pourraient plus aujourd’hui entamer des travaux de telle ampleur.
