He had literally stayed up the entire night to party with friends – a ship full of them! In one fell swoop, the entire evening came back to him. It is a colossal bar on the top of Holland America’s luxury cruise ship, the MS Ryndam. The room is dramatically enclosed by floor-to-ceiling windows, through which the lapping waves of the ocean can be observed. Furthermore, this wasn’t just any cruise; it was a poker cruise consisting of 546 players and roughly 750 companions, with the only non-poker related people on board being the ship’s crew. All week long, PartyPoker.com and Card Player Cruises put on a fabulous event. Poker players from all over the world partied and enjoyed one another’s company throughout the week. Seine Jugendzeit verbrachte Mike Sexton im Amerikanischen Tiefland, wo recht schnell klar wurde, daß Mike ein begnadeter Sportler ist. In der Familie von Sexton gab es jede Menge Talente, deshalb erhielten sowohl Mike, als auch sein Bruder ein Vollstipendium an der Universität von Ohio, etwas was zu dieser Zeit nicht allgemein üblich war. Während seiner Zeit an der Uni, spielte Mike fast täglich Kartenspiele, wie z.B. Gin Rummy und Poker. Ein guter Start Mike kam am Ende der Grundschule das erste Mal in Kontakt mit Poker, als er das Spiel von seinem Freund Danny Robinson erlernte. Danny Robinson wurde später als einer der weltbesten Seven Card Stud Spieler bekannt. Deshalb waren die Voraussetzungen für Mike damals schon sehr gut und schon bald war er dem Pokerspiel komplett verfallen. Die Jahre an der Universität vergingen und Mike stellte fest, daß er sich mehr für Kartenspiele interessierte, als er anfänglich angenommen hatte. Da er regelmäßig mit Robinson spielte, erreichte er sehr schnell ein Skill-Level, durch welches er die Home Games sehr leicht schlagen konnte. Das Talent hatte Mike wohl von seinem Vater geerbt, da sein Vater sehr intensiv Bridge gespielt hatte und damit eine Menge Geld gewonnen hatte. Obwohl er fast jeden Tag seines Studiums entweder Poker oder Bridge spielte, schaffte er es die Universität erfolgreich zu beenden.
