Además, en agradecimiento a la comunidad académica y a la Universitat Jaume I. 2 Resumen: en los últimos años, los movimientos populistas han avanzado en diversos países europeos, llegando incluso al poder. Si bien los medios de comunicación se han hecho eco de un fenómeno ya consolidado, no tratan su complejidad morfológica y causal. Este trabajo no sólo pretende conceptualizar un término controvertido a nivel académico, sino explorar su evolución histórica y características más comunes. Entre éstas destacan la apelación al pueblo frente a las élites; la crítica a la democracia representativa y a la globalización; o el liderazgo carismático. De las dos tipologías más corrientes (el protestatario y el nacionalista), se pondrá el foco en la segunda de ellas, también conocida como nacionalpopulismo, que además presenta un componente nativista, anti inmigratorio, y patriótico. A causa de esto, suele equipararse a la derecha radical. La investigación abarca un caso concreto en España: el partido político Vox. Sus resultados recientes en Andalucía y el conjunto de España, no cuentan con precedentes en el posfranquismo. Por ello, este documento busca los motivos del aumento de sus apoyos sociales; analiza el empleo de las redes sociales; así como de técnicas de comunicación política como el storytelling o narración de historias, el framing o encuadre del mensaje, y la propaganda política. Todas ellas, de demostrada efectividad y crecimiento en el entorno digital, y empleadas por políticos de diferentes ideologías. Tras el éxito electoral en 2015 de Podemos (un movimiento populista de signo izquierdista), Vox se presenta como su homólogo en el espectro ideológico opuesto. Las siguientes páginas relacionan al partido conservador de Santiago Abascal, con un populismo que aúna la defensa del nacionalismo español; la centralización del Estado; el rechazo a la inmigración irregular; la crítica al establishment político; o el tradicionalismo social y cultural. Para ello, se examina cómo establece Vox estas temáticas en la agenda pública de Twitter; también la imagen política de su líder en Instagram; y el uso de los recursos audiovisuales en la plataforma YouTube. Todo ello, en un periodo concreto: la campaña electoral del 28- A. De igual modo, se establecen las bases de su mensaje discursivo, investigando también la evolución a lo largo de cuatro intervenciones públicas de Abascal, entre 2014 y 2019. De esta forma, se aplica el marco teórico seleccionado para establecer, finalmente, en qué grado Vox puede considerarse (tras pequeños precedentes protagonizados por Jesús Gil, Ruiz Mateos o Plataforma per Catalunya) como el nuevo nacionalpopulismo español, que además ha llegado para quedarse. Palabras clave: populismo, nacionalpopulismo, Vox, comunicación política, framing, storytelling Abstract: in recent years, populist movements have advanced in various European countries, even coming to power. While the media have echoed an already consolidated phenomenon, they do not address its morphological and causal complexity. This work not only seeks to conceptualize a controversial term at the academic level, but to explore its historical evolution and more common characteristics. Among these are the appeal to the people against the elites; criticism of representative democracy and globalization; or charismatic leadership. Of the two most common typologies (the protester and the nationalist), the focus will be on the second one, also known as nationalpopulism, which also presents a nativist, anti-immigration, and patriotic component. Because of this, it is usually equated to the radical right. The investigation covers a specific case in Spain: the political party Vox. Its recent results in Andalusia and the whole of Spain, have no precedents in post-Francoism. Therefore, this document looks for the reasons for the increase of its social support; analyses the use of social networks; as well as political communication techniques such as storytelling, framing or political propaganda. All of them, with proven effectiveness and growth in the digital environment, and employed by politicians of different ideologies. After the electoral success in 2015 of Podemos (a populist movement of the leftist sign), Vox is presented as its counterpart in the opposite ideological spectrum. The following pages relate to the conservative party of Santiago Abascal, with a populism that combines the defense of Spanish nationalism; the centralization of the State; the rejection of irregular immigration; criticism of the political establishment; or social and cultural traditionalism. To do this, we examine how Vox establishes these themes in the public agenda of Twitter; also the political image of its leader in Instagram; and the use of audiovisual resources on the YouTube platform. All this, in a specific period: the electoral campaign of 28-A. In the same way, the bases of its discursive message are established, also investigating the evolution along four public interventions of Abascal, between 2014 and 2019. In this way, the selected theoretical framework is applied to establish, finally, to what degree Vox can be considered (after small precedents starring Jesús Gil, Ruiz Mateos or Platform per Catalunya) as the new Spanish nationalpopulism, which has come to stay. Fue un periodo en el que José María Aznar parecía obsesionado por emular a Jesús Polanco en la configuración de un imperio mediático capaz de alternarse con Prisa y el Psoe en el poder. Esta carrera por el control de los medios hizo y deshizo el mayor número de pactos y traiciones empresariales que se recuerdan en la reciente historia de España, con Antonio Asensio haciendo de comodín entre el Psoe, el PP y el todopoderoso Jesús Polanco.     MANIFESTO ABOUT CORRUPTION IN THE SPANISH JUDICIAL SYSTEM Mario Conde (President of Banesto, one of the biggest Spanish banks during the 1980s) in his first book “The System: My experience in the power” (1994), described his experiences on illegal relationships between the financial system, the government, the media and the judicial system, creating a corrupted system, allegedly criminal. Along the history of Spanish democracy, the collusion between the ruling class and certain business sectors highly regulated is well known, mainly with the financial system and the telecommunications and electricity companies. In 2015, Mr Bárcenas (ex-senator and PP’s ex-treasurer) said: “Mafia and politics are the same thing”. In Italy and in Spain, politicians are known as “La Casta” (The Breed), a name that evokes Mafia. In the Spanish parliament itself, at the State of the Nation debate session on February 24th, 2015, a member of the congress called the President, Mariano Rajoy, “Capo” (head of the Mafia). On March 11th, 2015, at a TV program, the congresswoman Irene Lozano said: “We are governed by a Mafia that doesn’t care about the general interests of the Nation, but just about its own. The journalist Iñaki Gabilondo talked about “institutional Mafia” in a video on his blog http://blogs.elpais.com/la-voz-de-inaki/ on March 10th, 2015. On March 13th, 2015 the democratic President of Venezuela described the Spanish Prime Minister as a dictator. It´s worth recalling King of Spain´s authoritarianism when, on November 10th, 2007 he blurted to the democratic Prime Minister: Why don’t you shut up? This authoritarianism is usual among Spanish public authorities and it is the basis of their regular excesses and of the violation of citizens’ human rights.

    The Politics of Contemporary Spain The Politics of Contemporary Spain charts the trajectory of Spanish politics from the transition to democracy through to the present day, including the aftermath of the Madrid bombings of March 2004 and the elections that followed three days later.     THE FALL OF THE MADRID BIG BANKS (1960-2000): THE ROLE OF INNOVATION (TECHNOLOGICAL AND FINANCIAL), by José L. García-Ruiz (Complutense University of Madrid) ([email protected]) The crisis of the Spanish financial system that started in 1977 put an end to the long- standing hegemony of the Madrid big banks (Hispano, Banesto, Central). In a few years, Banco Santander took control of these institutions: in 1993 acquired Banco Español de Crédito (Banesto) and in 1999 acquired Banco Central Hispano, formed in 1991 from the merger of Central and Hispano. These operations allowed Santander to increase its size in order to be a global player in a subsequent stage. The aim of this paper is to describe and to measure the role of innovation (technological and financial) in the fall of the Madrid big banks, something which has never been explained in a satisfactory way. Banking was a very traditional industry everywhere up to c. 1960, but since then processes of liberalization, internationalization and innovation (technological and financial) were triggered and the financial institutions had to face truly new challenges, even for those like the Spanish, who operated in a market with limited competition. The main conclusion of the paper is that neither technological innovations nor financial innovations seem to have played a key role in the demise of the Madrid big banks. The traditional ‘boring banking’ (Krugman) of the Northern banks (Santander, Bilbao, Vizcaya) won the match in the tumultuous years of the late twentieth century that brought about a new configuration of the Spanish banking industry.
