In Italy, two years of anti-corruption scandals Spain's Gonzalez led to almost a total turnoverof the political class in the March parliamentary elections. In England, the Conservatives were trounced in local elections in April, and Prime Minister John by Christine Bierr.e Major is not expected to stay in office after the June 12 elections for the European Parliament. The mood in Spain these days anticipates a rapid "end of Likewise in Spain, the crisis is accelerating so quickly regime" for Socialist Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez, who that it is hard to speculate how much longer Gonzalez will be has been in power for 12 years. Their r!!signations had barely been accepted by Gonzalez, when two other top figures of Spain's financial. establishment were arrested: Mariano Rubio, head of the Bank of Spain, and Manuel de la Concha, head of Madrid's stock exchange. The latter is also suspected of having managed investment funds for Albero, which were not properly declared to the tax authorities. The last to resign was Judge Baltazar Garzon, number two in the Interior Ministry, who became quite popular after running successful operations against drug traffickers. Gon zalez had brought him in to boost the regime's credibility. Garzon claims that he didn't know about all this corruption. Felipe Gonzalez has refused to step down and call for new parliamentary elections. Only a censure vote by the parliamentary majority could force him to resign, but so far the two parties that have joined with his own Socialist Party to give him a majority, the Catalan and Basque nationalists, are clinging to the governing coalition, and so the opposition could not expect to win a vote against him. How much longer this will last is another question. The Cisneros connection Some observers expect the scandals to continue. Book Reviews This relates to an old story, which EIR previously reported, concerning possible kickbacks to Gonzalez from the pur chase by Cisneros of Galerias Preciado, a chain of depart ment stores, for the juicy sum of 20 billion pesetas. This could well cause the downfall of Gonzalez, since the Cisner oses are currently under investigation for fraud in the case of The Romanian secret the Venezuelan Banco Latino, of which the Cisneros Group was an important shareholder, and which has been accused, among other things, of being involved in drug-money laun service's 'wilderness dering. Another sore spot for Gonzalez on the Venezuelan front by Daniel B. Perez is also tight with the Cisneros clan.
ABSTRACT Last years of socialist Government consolidated a network of related means to the power that included the assault to the Group Antenna 3, before the new Government of the PP was stimulating from 1996 the creation of his own audio-visual emporium across Telefonica and, again, Antenna 3 TV.

  • Manifesto About Corruption in the Spanish Judicial System
MANIFESTO ABOUT CORRUPTION IN THE SPANISH JUDICIAL SYSTEM Mario Conde (President of Banesto, one of the biggest Spanish banks during the 1980s) in his first book “The System: My experience in the power” (1994), described his experiences on illegal relationships between the financial system, the government, the media and the judicial system, creating a corrupted system, allegedly criminal. Along the history of Spanish democracy, the collusion between the ruling class and certain business sectors highly regulated is well known, mainly with the financial system and the telecommunications and electricity companies. In 2015, Mr Bárcenas (ex-senator and PP’s ex-treasurer) said: “Mafia and politics are the same thing”. In Italy and in Spain, politicians are known as “La Casta” (The Breed), a name that evokes Mafia. In the Spanish parliament itself, at the State of the Nation debate session on February 24th, 2015, a member of the congress called the President, Mariano Rajoy, “Capo” (head of the Mafia). On March 11th, 2015, at a TV program, the congresswoman Irene Lozano said: “We are governed by a Mafia that doesn’t care about the general interests of the Nation, but just about its own. The journalist Iñaki Gabilondo talked about “institutional Mafia” in a video on his blog http://blogs.elpais.com/la-voz-de-inaki/ on March 10th, 2015. On March 13th, 2015 the democratic President of Venezuela described the Spanish Prime Minister as a dictator. It´s worth recalling King of Spain´s authoritarianism when, on November 10th, 2007 he blurted to the democratic Prime Minister: Why don’t you shut up? This authoritarianism is usual among Spanish public authorities and it is the basis of their regular excesses and of the violation of citizens’ human rights.

European Commission steps up reform pressure in return for easing of budget deficit targets. Former Caja Madrid chairman jailed. Foreign policy Support for the euro remains high, despite unfavourable view of the EU Two-thirds of Spaniards want to remain in the euro even though only 4% view economic conditions as good, down from 65% in 2007, and only 46% have a favourable view of the European project (60% in 2012), according to a survey of the EU by the Pew Research Centre. Only 28% of respondents said the best way to solve the country’s economic problems was to spend more in order to stimulate growth compared with 56% in Greece, 37% in the UK and 42% in Poland. These novels sketch an alarming social portrait of youth dissent in Spain’s nascent democracy, which had relatively recently joined social, political, and economic arms with the rest of Western Europe.

  • 2005 – the Politics of Contemporary Spain
The Politics of Contemporary Spain The Politics of Contemporary Spain charts the trajectory of Spanish politics from the transition to democracy through to the present day, including the aftermath of the Madrid bombings of March 2004 and the elections that followed three days later. It offers new insights into the main political parties and the political system, into the monarchy, corruption, terrorism, regional and conservative nationalism and into Spain’s policies in the Mediterranean and the European Union. It challenges many existing assumptions about politics in Spain, reaching beyond systems and practices to look at identities and political cultures. It brings to bear on the analysis the latest empirical data and theoretical perspectives. Providing a detailed political analysis in an historical context, this book is of vital importance to students and researchers of Spanish studies and politics. It is also essential reading for all those interested in contemporary Spain. Sebastian Balfour is Professor of Contemporary Spanish Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science. • THE FALL of the MADRID BIG BANKS (1960-2000): the ROLE of INNOVATION (TECHNOLOGICAL and FINANCIAL), by José L
THE FALL OF THE MADRID BIG BANKS (1960-2000): THE ROLE OF INNOVATION (TECHNOLOGICAL AND FINANCIAL), by José L. García-Ruiz (Complutense University of Madrid) ([email protected]) The crisis of the Spanish financial system that started in 1977 put an end to the long- standing hegemony of the Madrid big banks (Hispano, Banesto, Central). In a few years, Banco Santander took control of these institutions: in 1993 acquired Banco Español de Crédito (Banesto) and in 1999 acquired Banco Central Hispano, formed in 1991 from the merger of Central and Hispano. These operations allowed Santander to increase its size in order to be a global player in a subsequent stage. The aim of this paper is to describe and to measure the role of innovation (technological and financial) in the fall of the Madrid big banks, something which has never been explained in a satisfactory way. Banking was a very traditional industry everywhere up to c. 1960, but since then processes of liberalization, internationalization and innovation (technological and financial) were triggered and the financial institutions had to face truly new challenges, even for those like the Spanish, who operated in a market with limited competition. The main conclusion of the paper is that neither technological innovations nor financial innovations seem to have played a key role in the demise of the Madrid big banks. The traditional ‘boring banking’ (Krugman) of the Northern banks (Santander, Bilbao, Vizcaya) won the match in the tumultuous years of the late twentieth century that brought about a new configuration of the Spanish banking industry.
