Erik Spoelstra, Miami Heat Coaching U (2015 – Orlando, Florida) “Sets to get your best player shots & the culture of Miami Heat basketball” -How to create an offensive style that fits your personnel. A lot of us fall into a trap of falling in love with a system you see on TV. -Started out as an entry-level video intern and worked his way up. -Miami Heat = unique organization. You have to have great leadership in our league. Continuity can win—having a consistent culture. I am a caretaker of that culture. -Be well rounded within our game (work with different position groups, scouting, etc.) -Always strive to learn more. -Was greatly impacted by the book “Mindset” by Carol Dweck (the importance of “growth mindset”). -Not everyone has the mindset to get uncomfortable. -Create a team of people that pushes your thinking (constantly asking you “Why? Why do you do that?”). They don’t need to be in your sport or even be a coach at all (business leaders can be great for this). -Doc Rivers: get over yourself (will allow you to hear someone’s idea/opinion without taking offense to it). -“When to Rob a Bank” by Steven Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner -Miami Heat: Toughest, nastiest, best-conditioned, most professional, and least- liked team in the league. -The Big 3 never got enough credit for the sacrifices they made (money, stats, roles). -Spoelstra held the training camp for the first “Big 3” Miami Heat team on an air force base with the players sleeping in bunks. -A big part of your culture is getting the right people in your culture.

  • March Coaching Notebook 2018
JUNE 2018 COACHING NOTEBOOK – PICKANDPOP.NET The art of the cut (The Athletic) -When the Sixers call Point, B-Deny or another play that involves Redick running off a screen, he doesn’t view it as his turn to shoot. Instead, he phrases it as “a time to move bodies and potentially move the ball.” From there, it’s up to the Sixers to figure out what the defense is giving them. Brad Stevens and the Celtics have a special brand of toughness (ESPN.com) -Brett Brown, the Philadelphia 76ers head coach, is fond of saying, "The pass is king." As the Boston Celtics extended to a 3-0 lead against Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference semifinals, making seemingly every big play, some Celtics staffers began whispering their own version: "Toughness is king." The last slide of the film edit that Brad Stevens, Boston's coach, showed his team before Game 3 in Philadelphia contained a definition of toughness Stevens found recently in a book (he can't recall which one; he reads a lot): "Toughness is being able to physically and emotionally perform your task through any condition." -"If things are going really well in a home game, do you get caught up in that, or do you keep playing the right way?" Stevens asked in a chat with ESPN.com the day after Boston's Game 3 win in Philadelphia. "If things are going like they were in the second quarter last night [when the Sixers went on a run], do you say, 'I have a job to do and I'm going to do it, and I don't care that everyone is going nuts over this [Joel] Embiid dunk?' That is toughness.

Story by BRIAN HUDGINS Within Ed Winkle’s work environment, the shortest distance traveled often comes during his daily commute. As vice president of global partnerships for the National Basketball Association, Winkle deals with the marketing aspects of a rapidly growing global sport. It is a career that has taken him through many Asian countries — and now to Midtown Manhattan, where Winkle works at the NBA League’s 5th Avenue headquarters and resides just a few blocks away. Winkle likes the simplicity of the arrangement. “I don’t own a car in New York because there is nowhere to park,” he says. “I walk to work every day. It’s very different than if you are living in most places around the world.” Since graduating from IWU with a degree in finance and insurance, Winkle has logged countless travel hours to and from Winkle (right) with Erik Spoelstra at a press conference in the destinations around the globe.
