Erik Spoelstra, Miami Heat Coaching U (2015 – Orlando, Florida) “Sets to Get Your Best Player Shots & the Culture of Miami Heat Basketball” Erik Spoelstra, Miami Heat Coaching U (2015 – Orlando, Florida) “Sets to get your best player shots & the culture of Miami Heat basketball” -How to create an offensive style that fits your personnel. A lot of us fall into a trap of falling in love with a system you see on TV. -Started out as an entry-level video intern and worked his way up. -Miami Heat = unique organization. You have to have great leadership in our league. Continuity can win—having a consistent culture. I am a caretaker of that culture. -Be well rounded within our game (work with different position groups, scouting, etc.) -Always strive to learn more. -Was greatly impacted by the book “Mindset” by Carol Dweck (the importance of “growth mindset”). -Not everyone has the mindset to get uncomfortable. -Create a team of people that pushes your thinking (constantly asking you “Why? Why do you do that?”). They don’t need to be in your sport or even be a coach at all (business leaders can be great for this). -Doc Rivers: get over yourself (will allow you to hear someone’s idea/opinion without taking offense to it). -“When to Rob a Bank” by Steven Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner -Miami Heat: Toughest, nastiest, best-conditioned, most professional, and least- liked team in the league. -The Big 3 never got enough credit for the sacrifices they made (money, stats, roles). -Spoelstra held the training camp for the first “Big 3” Miami Heat team on an air force base with the players sleeping in bunks. -A big part of your culture is getting the right people in your culture. -Trying to find a balance between fighting for our culture (toughness, preparation, etc.) and paying attention to the findings of “sports science.” -We’re all trying to find truth and accountability. -As coaches, we need to be the truth-bearers (lots of time that creates conflict). When you tell the truth now, it create confrontation and you need to have the courage to face that. To win at the highest level the truth is one of the most important things. -Graditude is another big core value for the Heat. -Shine the light on someone else (praise somebody else). Get over yourself and make it about someone else. -In creating a staff, it is very important to have a diversity of thinking (get people that think differently than you). They can’t be so far in one way that they don’t get your culture (they have to be able to buy in to our vision). They should come in and make you uncomfortable. -We’re always asking our players to get past their ego, how about us? Find a culture of disagreeing and confrontation (very valuable on your staff). -What are the lines of communication within your organization? Can you disagree? Does everyone feel empowered to give their opinion? -Terminology: make sure your staff is consistent with the verbiage they use with the players -You can only work your players so hard if they don’t trust you. -I always ask our staff, “What did you guys do to connect with our guys?” -Stan Van Gundy: everybody on your staff is a player development coach. -Style of play: you have to have an honest evaluation of your strengths/weaknesses. What fits your personnel? -Changed Miami’s defensive system in order to cause more turnovers (speed the game up). -Playing Battier at the 4, we knew we weren’t going to be a great rebounding team. You have to know what you’re giving up. -In today’s NBA, it’s not enough to be playing with a “space 4.” He needs to be a “playmaking 4.” -Despite the analytics crusade against it, don’t completely eliminate the midrange jumper from your team’s offensive attack -Steve Jobs: “Our goal is to create a product that people want to use.” -When crafting a continuity, you should be focused on something that can make everyone feel that they’re involved as well as something that gets you to your strengths (catch & shoot, isolations, spread pick & roll, etc.) -We wanted our continuity to get us to spread pick & rolls, post-ups, catch & shoots and elbow isolations. • March Coaching Notebook 2018
JUNE 2018 COACHING NOTEBOOK – PICKANDPOP.NET The art of the cut (The Athletic) -When the Sixers call Point, B-Deny or another play that involves Redick running off a screen, he doesn’t view it as his turn to shoot. Instead, he phrases it as “a time to move bodies and potentially move the ball.” From there, it’s up to the Sixers to figure out what the defense is giving them. Brad Stevens and the Celtics have a special brand of toughness (ESPN.com) -Brett Brown, the Philadelphia 76ers head coach, is fond of saying, "The pass is king." As the Boston Celtics extended to a 3-0 lead against Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference semifinals, making seemingly every big play, some Celtics staffers began whispering their own version: "Toughness is king." The last slide of the film edit that Brad Stevens, Boston's coach, showed his team before Game 3 in Philadelphia contained a definition of toughness Stevens found recently in a book (he can't recall which one; he reads a lot): "Toughness is being able to physically and emotionally perform your task through any condition." -"If things are going really well in a home game, do you get caught up in that, or do you keep playing the right way?" Stevens asked in a chat with ESPN.com the day after Boston's Game 3 win in Philadelphia. "If things are going like they were in the second quarter last night [when the Sixers went on a run], do you say, 'I have a job to do and I'm going to do it, and I don't care that everyone is going nuts over this [Joel] Embiid dunk?' That is toughness.

Story by BRIAN HUDGINS Within Ed Winkle’s work environment, the shortest distance traveled often comes during his daily commute. As vice president of global partnerships for the National Basketball Association, Winkle deals with the marketing aspects of a rapidly growing global sport. It is a career that has taken him through many Asian countries — and now to Midtown Manhattan, where Winkle works at the NBA League’s 5th Avenue headquarters and resides just a few blocks away. Winkle likes the simplicity of the arrangement. “I don’t own a car in New York because there is nowhere to park,” he says. “I walk to work every day. • Racial Double Standards? the Case of Expected Performance and Dismissals of Head Coaches In
Racial double standards? The case of expected performance and dismissals of head coaches in NBA Carlos Gomez-Gonzalez, Julio del Corral, Andrés Maroto ABSTRACT Professional basketball in the US provides an opportunity to test racial differences in the labor market. In contrast to other professional sports, such as baseball or American football, and, more deeply, to other economic sectors, black Americans are represented in influencing positions as head coaches in this competitive setting. The paper investigates the influence of the race of the coach and performance (winning ratio and an efficiency index relative to expectations) on dismissal decisions. The data includes coach- team information over a 20-year period of time in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the analysis uses several probit models. The results show that black head coaches are more likely to be fired and less prone to quit than white head coaches, ceteris paribus. Both measures of performance (efficiency and victories) also play a significant role in dismissals. Keywords: Basketball, Coaches, Dismissal, Efficiency, Race, Performance, NBA 1 1. Introduction In the words of Samuel Johnson, racial discrimination was a fact "too evident for detection and too gross for aggravation" in the American society of the first part of the 20th century (Arrow, 1998, p. 92). African Americans had a strictly limited access to certain jobs, which prevented them from creating a social network and reaching top positions (Ibarra, 1995). In recent years, although African Americans still face barriers to access leadership jobs in certain sectors, they have successfully scale top positions in professional sports, particularly in basketball.

  • The Managerial Contribution of Coaches in the National Basketball Association ∗
The Managerial Contribution of Coaches in the National Basketball Association ∗ Ramzy Al-Amine y June 2020 Abstract This paper explores the high frequency of front office changes to disentangle the relative contribution of head coaches in the National Basketball Association (NBA). By employing a manager-fixed effect regression approach, it estimates the average additional wins contributed by each head coach since 1985. Not only do the generated fixed effects provide much-needed quantitative insight into the relative effectiveness of current NBA head coaches, but they are also useful in predicting team wins for future coach-roster parings. I find that including coaching fixed effects reduces forecast errors by as much as 10 percent when predicting next season wins. JEL-classification: C13, C23, D22, J44, J63 Key words: fixed effects, managerial contributions, organizational settings, sports, basketball. ∗I thank Tim Willems, Kevin Wiseman, Dan Brown, Petr Sedlacek, Manasa Patnam, Tamim Bayoumi, Vladimir Klyuev and Kevin Mazur for useful comments. [email protected] 1 1 Introduction Despite advancements in analytics, the basketball world continues to lack a systematic quantification of the coaching effect. Those with most silverware are traditionally consid- ered all-time greats. But while championships are a signal for team success, the degree to which coaches contribute to them remains a matter of conjecture. For example, Phil Jack- son's 11 championship rings are often over-looked in favor of perennial superstars (Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal). This paper accomplishes two objectives. First, it estimaties the relative contribution of coaches in light of roster characteristics and in- juries. Second, it determines whether a coach's prior tenures are helpful in predicting his success in future tenures.

  • Heat Lose Chris Bosh Indefinitely to Severe Poetic Justice
Heat Lose Chris Bosh Indefinitely To Severe Poetic Justice SPORTS NEWS May 18, 2012 Vol 48 Issue 21 Sports · Nba Basketball MIAMI—After straining his abdominal muscles, Miami power forward Chris Bosh will be out indefinitely in what appears to be a severe case of poetic justice for his arrogant and presumptive team, sources close to the Heat confirmed Tuesday. An MRI performed late Monday confirmed the analysis: Bosh going down late in the first half of Miami's 95-86 victory over the Pacers Sunday was exactly what the team had coming for assuming the NBA title was theirs by right. "After examining Bosh's test results, I have to say that this comeuppance for unbounded hubris will certainly keep Bosh out for the rest of the playoff series against Indiana, if not longer," Heat physician Dr. Harlan Selesnick said. "Unfortunately, no matter how fitting it may be, this is exactly the kind of cosmic, karmic punishment the team can't afford at this time." Analysts agreed that Tuesday's 78-75 loss to the humbler, more team-oriented Pacers, who at no point attempted to create a top-heavy roster centered around three superstars, can be directly traced to Bosh's fate-induced absence. "LeBron James and Dwyane Wade put up amazing numbers in that game, scoring 21 of the Heat's 24 points in the fourth quarter," Associated Press sportswriter Jeff Latzke said. "Of course, that simply showcases their selfishness and serves to demonstrate how the hand of universal justice was already smiting them for their unearned pride." "The sight of Ronny Turiaf, Udonis Haslem and Joel Anthony struggling to make up for Bosh's presence reminds us that a team without depth can never truly prevail," ESPN's J.A.
