Shelton’s 1943 Cowboy squad defeated Georgetown in the NCAA Championship game in Madison Square Garden. Two nights later, also in Madison Square Garden, the Cowboys earned the right to call themselves undisputed National Champions as they defeated that year’s NIT Champion, St. John’s University, in a game benefi tting the Red Cross.
