We will be happy to host you to these comfortable apartments and give you the opportunity to experience Cretan hospitality!Newly refurbished apartments and studios with a well equipped kitchen and bathroom.At Sunset Apartments you will enjoy all the elements that make Crete special, for all comforts.Each apartment has it's own decoration for a unique feeling for your stay.Along with our area guide you'll also find everything you need to know about our place.You will find a bound copy of this guide in your rooms, which you are welcome to take out with you during your stay so you needn't print this out. Your apartment We have sought to equip our place to a high standard and to anticipate your needs by providing all the things you might want for a enjoyable stay. Hair dryers sun-umbrellas and beach towels are provided so that you don’t have to worry about luggage restrictions.Kitchen is equipped in every room to cook anytime your meals.Each apartment has it's own decoration for a unique feeling for your stay.Coffee and Tea are provided for free to enjoy at mornings at your private Terrace or Balconies.It also have a private safebox for your valuables. Our philosophy You want to have a wonderful holiday and we want that for you too. We believe that when you are here this is your home for however long you are staying and that you will be relaxed, comfortable and happy. ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE INFORMATION ARRIVAL INFORMATION WIFI / INTERNET DETAILS The house has free Wi-Fi. The details are: SSID: Sunset Apartments Password: sunset1287 The service is provided for your enjoyment but you are responsible for safe and appropriate use and complying with all laws. If there is any loss of service please contact us. CHECK-IN TIME Check-in time is at 13.00pm. We can sometimes arrange an early check-in so please contact us if you will arrive early and we'll do our best, depends the availability! DRIVING DIRECTIONS If you are arriving via car and have a GPS / SatNav system in the car, please use "Sunset Apartments Rethymno" and follow the directions. GETTING HERE WITHOUT A CAR We understand that some of you will be traveling without a car. In this case finding us is pretty simple!You may need our airport shuttle from your airport (Heraklion or Chania) and our driver will wait for you at the arrivals of the airport picking you up transfer you with safety directly to Sunset Apartments INVENTORY CHECK Optional opportunity to add any specific inventory check you or your housekeeping will do on check in. PARKING Parking is provided for free outside of the apartments depends the availability . DEPARTURE INFORMATION CHECK-OUT PROCESS When you leave, please ensure you have taken all of your personal belongings and leave the keys to the property manager. We hope you had a wonderful holiday and wish you safe travels back home. We'd love to see you again next year! CHECK-OUT TIME Check-out time is strictly 12p.m. Should you require a later check-out we will do our best but you need to let us know beforehand. If we have guests arriving that day it will be almost impossible to offer a late check-out due to the cleaners needing to prepare for those guests. CLEANING You will find the house clean on arrival but please let us know if you are not satisfied.Cleaning service is every 4th day of your stay.If you need a cleaning service more often, please let us know and we will arrange this. An extra payment will apply. On departure it would be helpful if you could leave the house (particularly kitchen contents etc) clean and tidy when you leave. No need for you to perform a full clean! OVERVIEW OF THE AREA The apartments are located just one minute from the seafront. Newly refurbished apartments and studio with a well equipped kitchen and bathroom, are located close to the beach and several minutes from the center of Rethymno as well as to public transportation.Modern apartments designed for couples who want to spend beautiful private moments on their holiday, as well as families looking for comfort and relaxation. At Sunset Apartments you will enjoy all the elements that make Crete special, for all comforts.Each apartment has it's own decoration for a unique feeling for your stay.Coffee and Tea are provided for free to enjoy at mornings at your private Terrace or Balconies.It also have a private safebox for your valuables.All mattresses, linens, towels, pillows etc. are brand new. Free Wi-Fi connection is available in every room.A big Super Market is close by, only 1minute by foot.Many restaurants coffe shops as well a pharmacy is close to the apartments. SUGGESTIONS IF YOU ARRIVE EARLY Many guests will arrive before the designated check-in time. The good news is that there is plenty to do. We often suggest that guests visit the coffee shops of the area, that will give you more time to relax! There are also many restaurants for lunch so why not relax and enjoy some of the local food, enjoying the view of Rethymno beach! ABOUT THE ACCOMMODATION APPLIANCE INSTRUCTIONS / INFORMATION AIR CONDITIONING Our home has the benefit of air conditioning.Please ensure that all windows and outside doors are closed whilst the AC is running to ensure it operate to maximum efficiency. We recommend a setting of [72F / 22C] which we find keeps the place sufficiently cool. KITCHEN EQUIPMENT The Fridge/freezer: You should not need to adjust any settings. If you run into any difficulties (e.g. it's not cooling efficiently) please let us know. The Hob and Oven: The hob is a three burnerelectric hob, with it's oven BREAKAGES We understand that sometimes accidents happen! Should you break anything please let us know immediately - if it's minor we usually won't charge. If it's a larger issue (e.g. the TV screen!) we would like to agree the cost with you before you leave to avoid any issues later. Thank you! BEACH EQUIPMENT Beach towels, sun-umbrellas are provided for free. OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION BED LINEN / TOWELS All bed linens and towels are for free and are be changing the 4th day of your stay. GARBAGE DISPOSAL & RECYCLING In every of our room has a recycling bin outside of the terrace/Balcony.Recyclin bins empties the 4th day of cleaning. WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A POWER OUTAGE Be sure the key card for the power supply is in the slot position.In any case contact the property manager. CHURCH The nearest church is 300m from our place. GAS / PETROL STATIONS Petrol and Gas stations is about 1km away. GROCERY STORE Grocery Store can be found in the neighboorhood.The big Super Market close to the area is also including a grocery store. PHARMACIES A Pharmacy is 50 meters from the neighboorhood. POLICE STATION Police station is located in the center of the city about 10 minutes away from our place. ENJOYING YOUR TIME OUTSIDE CRETAN BEACHES/COASTS The prefecture of Rethymno is an ideal destination for summer holidays, since it offers a large number of beautiful beaches with blue, crystal waters. Magnificent sandy beaches can be visited on the north coast, at the Cretan Sea as well as on the south coast of the island, at the Libyan Sea. We would like to infrom you about some of the most lovely beaches: RETHYMNO BEACH: An organised sandy beach along the beautiful promenade of Rethymno for more than 20 km long, stretching from the town of Rethymno to the east towards the areas of Perivolia, Sfakaki, Platanes, Adelianos Kampos, Skaleta. PLAKIAS: The village of Plakias is situated 40 km south of Rethymno. This area has a superb sandy beach, and the well-organised infrastructure includes hotels, rooms, tavernas and restaurants. The organised beach offers both bathing and various water sports. PREVELI LAGOON: 38 km south of Rethymno, shortly before you arrive at the historic Monastery of Preveli, a track on the left hand side leads downhill to a parking place. After approximately 15-minutes downhill walk you arrive at the beautiful sandy beach with palm trees, where the River Kourtaliotis empties into the sea. LOUTRO: The seaside of village is located at a distance of about 71 km. south of Chania.The only access is by boat or as you wish, by foot ! Loutro is a place for those people who want something different.

    Maritime Landscapes of Southern Crete from the Paleolithic to Modern Times: The Gulf of Messara Underwater Survey NEH Collaborative Research Grant Proposal November 2017 Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World Institute of Nautical Archaeology Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities Karl Krusell Brown University STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT Maritime Landscapes of Southern Crete from the Paleolithic to Modern Times: The Gulf of Messara Underwater Survey This proposal seeks to gain funding for a major three-year collaborative research project aimed at characterizing the maritime landscapes of southern Crete from the island’s earliest human presence to the expulsion of the Ottomans at the very end of the 19th century CE. The maritime significance of Crete was already established in Greek oral tradition by the time the Iliad and Odyssey were first written down sometime in the 8th century BCE. Clues about the island’s seafaring history derived from such sources as Bronze Age wall paintings and New Testament scripture have provided the basis for much scholarly speculation, but ultimately leave many questions about the long-term development of maritime culture on the island unanswered. A recent debate among Mediterranean archaeologists was prompted by the discovery of lithic artifacts in southern Crete dated to the Paleolithic, which have the potential to push back the earliest human presence on Crete, as well as the earliest demonstrable hominin sea-crossings in the Mediterranean, to around 130,000 years ago. The project team will conduct an underwater survey of the Gulf of Messara, collecting data through both diver reconnaissance and remote sensing in order to ascertain the long-term history of social complexity, resource exploitation, and island connectivity.

The territorial and ideological expansion of Knossos during the Proto-Palatial period as evidenced by the peak sanctuaries distribution, development, and decline Abstract This paper proposes a new explanation of the intriguing distribution pattern of peak sanctuaries in Crete during the MM period, and the reasons for their fast expansion in the late Proto-Palatial period, followed by a sudden decline soon afterwards. The working hypothesis presented here is based on my intensive fieldwork carried out during the last decade and is supported by several recently identified sites which shed new light on these problems. At present about 40 sites in Crete can be classified as peak sanctuaries. They are mostly grouped in three regions: central Crete, the East Siteia peninsula and the Rethymnon isthmus, with a few “anomalous” sites beyond these regions. It is indisputable that the earliest, the most important and the longest-lived peak sanctuary was Iouchtas, closely related to Knossos. Iouchtas became a model-site, the idea of which spread to other parts of the island. Some regions, however, as for example those controlled by Malia and Phaistos, showed strong resistance to it. It will be argued in this paper that the peak sanctuary on Iouchtas did not reflect a universal idea of a mountain deity shared by all Cretans, but rather represented a local Knossian concept of a holy mountain which later became the sanctuary of a young storm-god (?), the protector of Knossos. The distribution of peak sanctuaries may thus represent the territorial and/or ideological expansion of Knossos during the MM IB and MM II periods and not the popularity of a mountain deity in Crete.

Δύσκολα ο ποιητής µπορεί να περιγράψει την απαράµιλλη οµορφιά που πλανιέται ανάµεσα στους ελαιώνες που καταλήγουν µέχρι την ακροθαλασσιά, την οµορφιά του σφυρίγµατος του αγέρα µέσα στα φαράγγια, το δέος µπροστά στο ηρωικό µοναστήρι του Αρκαδιού. Δύσκολα ο ζωγρά- φος θα µπορέσει να µεταφέρει στον καµβά του το γαλάζιο του ουρανού, το αντανάκλασµα του ήλιου στους τοίχους των βενετσιάνικων αρχοντικών, το γλαυκό της πεντακάθαρης απέραντης θάλασσας που απλώνεται γύρω µας, και τον γαλήνιο ουρανό του Αυγούστου µε την πανσέληνο του. Σας προσκαλώ να έρθετε και να γνωρίσετε από κοντά τον τόπο µας. Να γευτείτε τις οµορφιές του, την ιστορία του, το παραδοσιακό φαγητό του, το κρασί και την τσικουδιά του...   • Ioannis Vlachos (Daskalogiannis)
    Ioannis Vlachos (Daskalogiannis) Ioannis Vlachos is one of the most celebrated Cretan resistance heroes from the eighteenth century. He is better known as Daskalogiannis which means 'Gianni the teacher'. Vlachos was born in Anopoli. His family earned a lot of money from merchant shipping. He also personally owned ships and traded goods in major ports around the Mediterranean Sea. Vlachos organized, led and supported the uprising against the Ottoman (Turkish) occupiers of Crete in April 1770. He tried to drive away the Turks from Crete with the support of Russian Admiral Orlof. But when the revolution started in Sfakia, which never came in Turk hands, the Russians did not show up. With 1,300 poorly trained fighters he had to fight against 40,000 Turks. They couldn't keep up against such a large majority. In order to save his own men, Vlachos signed an agreement with the Turks at Frangokastello in March 1771. When he, in the company of 70 of his men, signed the truce he knew that he marched into an ambush. He hoped, however, that he would be seen as a martyr. He hoped the struggle for independence continued, in which he would be seen as an example. After Vlachos was captured, the Pasha of Chandax (today Heraklion) recommended to skin him alive. This happened on June 17, 1771. Witnesses said he didn't betray his men during the torturing. Shortly hereafter Vlachos died. The death of Vlachos was certainly not meaningless. It was a first step toward the independence of Crete. In all revolts and struggle to gain independence from the Turks, which followed Vlachos was seen as an example and source of inspiration, until the final revolution took place in 1898.
