History Note The Women's Division of the General Board of Global Ministries traces its roots back to women's mission boards and societies established by the predecessor denominations of The United Methodist Church, the oldest being the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, founded in 1869. Ultimately, all the predecessor denominations created women's home and foreign missionary societies or boards, based on the conviction that missions to women should be run by women. Evangelization, schools, hospitals, social work and advocacy programs were implemented over time and the institutions created by these programs were managed and run by women. During the mergers of the predecessor denominations, the various women's boards and societies also were merged together. The Women's Division of the General Board Global Ministries was established in 1968 by the merger of the former Women's Division of Christian Service of the Board of Missions of the Methodist Church and the Women's Service of the Board of Missions of the Evangelical United Brethren. In 1968 the Board's name was the Board of Missions. It was changed to its current name in 1976. Scope Note This collection contains administrative records of the Women's Division, including minutes, correspondence, agendas, and reports from various departmental committees and sub-committees and on various issues and projects.
