    Special Olympics European Symposium ‘Community Integration through Sport’ Warsaw University of Life and Science, Nowoursynowska 166 Street, Building 37 Third Floor, Plenary Room September 19th 2010 10:00-16:30 Introduction Young people with and without intellectual disability are one of the main target groups for Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia’s current focus activities for community integration programs. During the Symposium the Special Olympics Youth Unified Sports® program will be highlighted as a model to promote the social integration of young people with intellectual disability in their local community. Special Olympics Unified Sports is a Special Olympics initiative that provides opportunities for sportsmen with and without intellectual disabilities to play on integrated sport teams. The University of Ulster/Belfast in Northern Ireland conducted an evaluation study on the impact of Unified Sports participation on community integration of youths aged 12-25 in five European countries in 2009/2010. The results of the study will be presented at the Symposium. This study will open the discussion about integration of young people with and without intellectual disability in the community. The value of sport in community integration will be reflected in context with other activities and initiatives. The aims of the European Symposium are to collect, share and discuss current information on the status of community integration of young people with intellectual disabilities in Europe with a focus on the role of sports and to identify best practices for improving community integration and ensuring equality of opportunity. The symposium is organized by the Warsaw 2010 Special Olympics European Summer Games Organizing Committee in cooperation with Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia (SOEE).

In contrast to previously advanced views of social ventures as powerless actors, we find instead that they are able to leverage the visibility afforded by large-scale events to create positions of mutual dependence, which allow them to access broad support bases and assert themselves in relationships with external parties. Specifically, we find that resource mobilization involves six distinct tactics rooted in the softer forms of power, namely, attraction and inducement. The use of these soft-power tactics depends upon the social venture’s goal at different moments of the relationship with its partners and the level of support available from each external party. Our elaborated theory highlights both the role and limitations of soft power in mobilizing resources and managing relationships. Deirdre Flood Deirdre Flood Abstract Dublin City University This report presents an action research enquiry using the avenue of living educational theory to examine how I expanded my practice as a volunteer in Special Olympics to develop as an non formal educator within this context. I describe how I embraced my own values in education during this study and chose to be led by them as I attempted to understand how my values influenced my learning and the learning of others. I designed two action reflection cycles of enquiry from June 2010 to June 2011 whilst working with my local Special Olympics Club in Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland. In Cycle 1, I record my experience in the production of a commemorative DVD of the Club’s participation in the Special Olympics Ireland Games held in Limerick in June 2010. Relaxation techniques that alleviate psychological stress by helping them reach a better mental/emotional state may be more helpful for coping with stress. Music relaxation intervention in audio recorded forms were found to be effective for multi-faceted consequences of stress. However, effects of its live forms presented by a music therapist for alleviating psychological stress among female college students remain under-researched. This pilot study explored the impact of a live music relaxation intervention on female college students who self-reported as stressed (N = 31). The objectives of this study were to assess changes in five pre- and post-intervention states: negative affect, positive affect, contentment, relaxation responses, and observable relaxation responses. The focus of this study was to learn about qualitative differences in participants’ subjective experience with the intervention.

    2009 Annual Report ABOUT THE COVER PORTRAIT Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s portrait was made by artist David Lenz and is on display at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. It represents the first time the museum commissioned a portrait of an individual who has not served as either a president or first lady. In 1975 Palo Alto guitarist William Ackerman (1) coined the term "new- age music" and founded a record label, Windham Hill, to promote atmospheric instrumental acoustic music. New-age music was thus born as a reaction to rock music. Rock music was loud and noisy, expressing a teenage spirit. New-age music was quiet and melodic, expressing an adult mood. New-age music had no vocalist, no drums and no electric guitar. New-age music was, first and foremost, a synthesis. It was a synthesis of cultures (high and low), moods (upbeat, ecstatic, melancholy, spiritual), genres (folk, electronic, jazz, classical, psychedelic), formats (song, symphony, suite, jam) and lifestyles (western and eastern). Since each of these components had existed for decades (if not centuries), new-age music pre-existed itself. The most obvious ancestor of new-age music is classical music itself. Despite the aristocratic way it was presented in the symphony halls and opera houses, classical music had included "mood" instrumental music from the very beginning.
