    TEAM SELECTION POLICY TOTAL BWF THOMAS & UBER CUP FINALS (UBER CUP ONLY) 9-17 OCTOBER 2021 1. SELECTION OBJECTIVES: 1.1 Select a team capable of challenging for team medals at major championships. 1.2 Select a team that will gain experience to aid in their development for future Scottish teams; and individual honours at major events. 2. PLAYER ELIGIBILITY: 2.1 To be considered for selection the player must be eligible to represent Badminton Scotland under Badminton World Federation (BWF) regulations at the time 2.2 Players must be affiliated to Badminton Scotland. 2.3 Athletes wishing to be considered for International representation must enter both the Scottish Open and Scottish National Championships. Exemption from this will be at the discretion of the Head Coach and based around appropriateness for the athlete’s individual plan. 3. SELECTIONS Before this specific event was postponed from the original date in 2020, a selection had already been made in a selection meeting held on 12th of August 2020. The following 7 players were selected in that meeting: Kirsty Gilmour Rachel Sugden Lauren Middleton Julie MacPherson Ciara Torrance Eleanor O’Donnell Rachel Andrew The selection for the 2021 event will be a review of the originally selected team to ensure that the selected team will still be capable of achieving Badminton Scotland’s objectives for the Uber Cup finals. The approach will be that the original selection will be upheld unless the selection panel sees significant reasons for a change in selection to achieve the event objectives. 3.1 The Selection Panel for this event will consist of the National Head Coach, Chair of the Performance Committee, one BadmintonScotland Performance Coach and a non-voting observer from the Performance Committee.

    OCTOBER 2018 SPECIAL OLYMPICS – YORK COUNTY NEWSLETTER Special Olympics USA Games Seattle 2018 Bob Laudeman, Guest Reporter Throughout the first-week of July two athletes from Special Olympics York County, Jonathan Martin, and Jenny Laudeman, participated in the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games held in Seattle, Washington. As members of Team Pennsylvania, they competed for three days at the Willows Run Golf Club in Redmond, Washington under the direction of Coach Nat Martin. Jonathan competed as a Level 4, Individual Play golfer, playing nine holes of golf each day on a well maintained, challenging course. Jenny participated as a Level 1 Individual Skills golfer that included: chipping, pitching, short putt, long putt, driver, and five-iron competitions. Both athletes improved their scores each day, and at the end of the competition, Jonathan and Jenny proudly accepted Silver Medals at the Awards Ceremony. Team Pennsylvania gathered in Philadelphia on Friday, June 29th and flew to Seattle on Saturday, June 30th. Team Pennsylvania included 50 athletes and unified partners, 16 coaches, and SOPA staff, who were all housed in Terry Hall at the University of Washington Campus. The Opening Ceremony was held on Sunday, July 1st at the University of Washington Husky Football Stadium and televised on ABC Sports and ESPN. The competitions, held in fourteen (14) sports, began on Monday, July 2nd and ended on Friday, July 6th. Team Pennsylvania athletes competed in Athletics, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Golf, Gymnastics, Powerlifting, Unified Soccer, Swimming, and Tennis. The Closing Ceremony was held Friday evening, and Team Pennsylvania returned to Philadelphia on Saturday, July 8th.Jonathan and Jenny enjoyed competing, but also loved the Opening Ceremony, visiting the Fan Zone, the Mariners baseball game, and sight-seeing in Seattle with their families.

    AIS and Black Dog partner to improve mental fitness in young Australians 27th July 2020 EMBARGOED UNTIL 10AM MONDAY 27TH JULY 2020 Australian Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games athletes are joining the fight to help reduce rates of mental health issues in young children as part of a new community partnership between the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and Black Dog Institute. Designed to help young people manage their mental health and improve their general wellbeing, the Mental Fitness Program will see 27 current and former elite athletes assist in delivering mental wellbeing presentations, both in-person and online, at high schools throughout the country. Mental Fitness Program presenter and Commonwealth Games gold medal winning boxer Harry Garside said his personal experience with mental health education at school was a game-changer. “I wanted to get involved in the Mental Fitness Program because I know firsthand that these workshops can have a significant impact and change the course of a young person’s life,” said Mr Garside. “As an elite athlete, I want to role model behaviour that promotes self-care and positive psychology to help improve the wellbeing and resilience of young Australians.” In Australia, it is estimated that 1 in 5 people will experience symptoms of mental illness in any given year, and approximately 60% of those people won’t seek help. Over 75 per cent of mental health issues develop before the age of 25 which shows the importance of tackling the subject from an early age. Black Dog Institute Director and Chief Scientist Helen Christensen said the ability to bring sport and community together to teach meaningful life skills was needed now more than ever.
