Briefi ng 3 Young lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people Briefings for health and social care staff (a) Specific issues for young LGB people Young lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people can be vulnerable to a number of health risks because of people’s reactions to their identity. They may also feel stigmatised; there are very few role models for young LGB people, and many conclude that society will not approve of them. Many young people know they are lesbian, gay or bisexual by the age of 11 or 12, or have feelings of being different.1 However, some do not come out to someone else until they are 15 or 16. This period (11–16 years old) has been described as the isolation years and is the most crucial for targeting support and information. Homophobic bullying is an increasing problem in schools; the word ‘gay’ is the most frequent term of abuse in playgrounds. Evidence suggests that LGB young people, and those perceived to be LGB, may be more at risk of bullying.2 Between 30% and 50% of young people in secondary schools attracted to people of the same sex will have directly experienced homophobic bullying, compared with 10–20% of young people who have experienced general bullying.3 ChildLine4 estimates that around 2,700 young people access their services each year to talk about sexual orientation, homophobia and homophobic bullying. The most common problems talked about were homophobic bullying and fear of telling their parents about their sexual orientation. Furthermore, young people with LGB parents sometimes experience bullying. -
Justice for Victims of Sexual Abuse and Harassment

Lis Bates, [email protected] University of Bristol, UK This policy paper is a comment piece on recent sexual harassment and abuse scandals in the British Parliament, which also references new UK research on justice and gender-based violence. The author draws on six years working for the British Parliament as a clerk (parliamentary civil servant) to reflect on why the parliamentary culture and management has long ignored sexual harassment, abuse and bullying, often moving victims on rather than challenging (alleged) perpetrators. The paper presents current research being conducted by the universities of Bristol, Cardiff and UWE and national charity Women’s Aid, which is asking ‘What does justice mean to victims of gender-based violence?’ Using emerging findings from interviews with over 250 victims/survivors of gender- based abuse, the paper draws lessons for how the House of Commons authorities should respond to sexual harassment and abuse within Parliament. Vital in any victim-centred response are some key principles. Victims/survivors must: be listened to and taken seriously, be empowered to make their own choices about what happens next, be given a range of options including formal sanctions as well as less formal routes, potentially including specialist ‘transformational mediation’ and, most crucially, all be given access to specialist advocates trained in sexual harassment and abuse. -

CITY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON Section 28 and Black History Month: public libraries after the new urban left Colette Townend January 2020 Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MSc in Library Science Supervisor: Joseph Dunne-Howrie 1 Abstract The advent of Section 28 and Black History Month had very different initial impacts on British public library provision from 1987 onwards. Equal opportunities policies in new urban left local government of the earlier 1980s led to an increase of LGBT+ literature in libraries and schools, leading to the punitive Section 28 law, which would lead public libraries to self-censorship. The abolition of the GLC led to Black History Month (BHM) as a legacy of race and ethnic minority unit work. In library services today a historiography of Black and LGBT+ lives has been built through Black History Month and the corrective LGBT+ History Month (LGBTHM) respectively, with both being observed in modern day British local library services. Using desk research, surveys and in depth interviews with British public library workers about their experience of these phenomena of the 1980s, this dissertation investigates this history, recognises the work done by library workers and the results. Findings include the comparison of library services who stood up or fell to self-censorship under Section 28, as well as understanding BHM as a successful legacy of the new urban left’s LSPU and ultimately the value seen in BHM and LGBTHM by librarians today. 2 Contents: Abstract ..................................................................................................................................2 -

As a result of this, LGBTQ young adults are often framed as being at risk. Although this has been helpful in the past in order to raise awareness of the challenges experienced by LGBTQ young people, there is also evidence that they show resilience in response to those challenges. -

That is the number of women who will be sexually assaulted in the United States.1 Worldwide, a third of women will be sexually assaulted.2 In the face of such an epidemic, we should be equipping adolescents with all the tools necessary to not only help them protect themselves, but also to demand bystander intervention and prevent adolescents from becoming future predators; yet, only 16% of the information adolescents receive about sexual assault comes from their parents or schools.3 The rest comes from the media, which often leads to distorted beliefs of the nature of sexual assault. -
