GENTLEMEN, I DEDICATE to you this Volume, from a full persuasion, that as intimate friends of the late Rev. Dr. Coke, and guardians of his property, you must feel an interest in his reputation. When our mutual, but now deceased, friend sailed for India, and consigned to your care the management i of his temporal concerns, he committed to mine the > delineation of his character. For my work, which is now presented through you to the world, I hesitate to entertain correspondent hopes. / - If Dr. Coke had lived to reach the place of his ulti mate destination, my undertaking would, in all proba bility, have been less arduous than it is at present. It was his intention to have furnished me with documents, facts, and incidents in chronological order; and to have transmitted them from India, that they might have been arranged for his inspection, in case he had lived to return, or for publication, if he had visited Europe no more. This was a point which he kept in view while on his voyage, and his last letter to me, which was written off Madeira, chiefly turned on this topic. But the over-ruling Providence of God, which per mitted this plan to be formed, has mysteriously inter posed to prevent the execution of it. And, how para doxical soever it may appear, the same awful stroke, that has partially taken from me the means of fulfilling his wishes, has laid me under an additional obligation to comply with his request. From the difficulties of this situation you have hap pily afforded me some relief, by giving me access to all his papers that were in your possession, and by readily answering such questions as I found it necessary to propose. Furnished with these materials, in addition to my own resources, I have endeavoured to draw the outline of a faithful picture, without introducing an exu DEDICATION. V berance either of light or shade: In this state the work now approaches you; and I cheerfully consign it to your protection and care. That the pages of my volume are free from error and imperfection, I have no more the presumption to suppose, than I have the vanity to imagine that their defects can escape your penetration. Your long and intimate acquaintance with the deceased, must have deeply impressed upon your minds those varied features of his character, through which your judgments of him are formed and matured. This circumstance will preserve me from the imputation of flattery, although it may be at the expense of my labours. It is to this maturity of judgment, however, that I the more readily appeal, from a full conviction, that, because it is matured, it must be equally free from the influence of local prejudice, and the delusion of vision ary expectations. From you I have therefore a right to expect a decision, that will blend accuracy with candour, without furnishing me with an occasion to complain of severity, or making me a debtor to com passion. Should this work be so fortunate as thus favourably to pass the ordeal of your examination, my confidence in your ability and fidelity will shield me from illiberal criticisms, which may arise from other quarters. Many may censure, and some may approve: but none can be more competent to form an accurate estimate of what I have written, than yourselves. A 3 vi DEDICATION. There is, however, one department in which I expect you will find many rivals, and that is, among Dr. Coke's numerous friends, who, like you, will be soli citous to cherish a strong affection for his name and memory. Yet even here I can scarcely suppose you will have any superiors, when I dare not make an ex ception even in favour of Gentlemen, Your sincere friend, And humble servant, Samuel DREw. St. Austell, May 17, 1817. PR E FA C E. IN sending the following Biographical Sketch into the world, the writer of this volume has no design either to flatter the unreasonable admirers of the deceased, or to gratify his enemies. He has therefore not drawn an artificial picture; but he has followed him through life, and noticed the most distinguishing features in his character, without having an eye to either party, and without always adverting to the opinions, which the facts he records might induce the reader to entertain. Writing under these impressions, he is not conscious of hav ing passed over in silence any material incident in Dr. Coke's life, which could reasonably find a place in these memoirs, without descending to trifles, which can have no necessary connexion with a fair delineation of his character. On the same principle, he has neither emblazoned his virtues, nor am plified his faults; and, it is not improbable, that on this ac count, he has written in a manner that will give offence to all those, whom nothing can please but panegyric or defamation. “The struggling pangs of conscious truth to hide, To quench the blushes of ingenuous shame,” are feelings, to which the author, on the present occasion, is a total stranger. He might have expatiated on a train of fa vourable coincidences, and have exalted accident into a virtue; or he might have given shades to infirmities, which would have sprinkled them with the appearance of vice, without deviating from the rigid dictates of truth; but impartiality demanded from him a statement of naked facts, which should leave the A 3 viii PREFACE. judgment of the reader free from prepossession. To the candid and dispassionate, who are willing to make all reason able allowances for the frailties of human nature; and who must estimate these allowances by the various situations in which the deceased was placed, such a faithful delineation as the author thus proposes cannot fail to afford satisfaction. But after all, the accomplishment of his purpose, may fall short both of his wishes and hopes, and for this he must crave their indulgence. That a man, whose life has been spent in propagating Christianity—in carrying the light of the gospel among hea then nations—in cultivating and spreading the active and passive virtues which adorn social life—and finally, in direct ing sinners to the Saviour of the world, should find himself exposed to enemies, may seem exceedingly strange. But his tory and observation unite to inform us, that this has been the lot of almost every public character. “Censure is a tax which every man must pay the public for being eminent;” and we well know that this fine has been constantly exacted from the greatest benefactors of mankind. Both Wesley and Whitefield were exposed to the charges of pride, ambition, and enthusiasm; and even Mr. Fletcher could not escape the tongue of slander. To the shafts of unmerited censure, Dr. Coke was also exposed; and his name, as well as the names of his illus trious cotemporaries and predecessors, was doomed to bear the base insinuations of invidious tongues. But reproachful epithets merit no reply. It was sufficient for Dr. Coke, by the sanctions of his own conscience, to know that his motives were pure in the sight of God; and, for his numerous friends on each side of the Atlantic, it must be pleasing to learn, that he was beloved and revered in every country which had en joyed the benefits of his labours. Of this fact the following respectable testimonies furnish the most indubitable evidence. “My very dear friend Dr. Coke, “When I consider the solemn offer you made of yourself to the General Conference, and their free and de - PREFACE, ix liberate acceptance of you as their Episcopos, I must view you as most assuredly bound to this branch of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America.

Vickers No history of the Methodist mov,ement in the years immediately before and after John Wesley's death can be written without refer­ 1 ence to Thomas Coke, whose name has become something of a I. I household word in World Methodist circles. Though remembered especially as a pioneer of overseas missions, he also occupies an important niche in the early history of Wesleyan Methodism in both Europe and America. Yet it cannot be denied that Coke has, on the whole, had a "bad press" and that the admiration for his energy and devotion has usually been muted and hedged with qualifications. Quite apart from the treatment he has received in a long line of lives of Wesley, he has been singularly ill-served by his own biographers. Ev,en allowing for the concentration of Methodist scholarship on John Wesley, to the neglect of every other figure on the scene, it remains a curious fact that the only serious study of Coke to appear in the last hundred years is 'that by the American, Bishop W. A. Candler, in 1923. Before that, we have two early lives, by Jonathan Crowther, a friend and fellow-preacher (1815) and by . Samuel Drew, his official biographer (1817), and the solid but un­ documented volume of J. W. Etheridge (1860). The other, slighter studies that have appeared from time to time are largely derived from these.! Yet a considerable, if not overwhelming, volume of material, especially letters, has survived on both sides of the Atlan­ tic, and much of it rem,ains unpublished.

BOWMER, M.A., B.D., Ph.D. Volume XLII May 1980 JOHN WESLEY AND BISHOP JOSEPH BUTLER A Fragment of John Wesley's Manuscript Journal 16th to 24th August 1739 S a spiritual check, and following the advice of Bishop Jeremy A Taylor, John Wesley began on 5th April 1725 to keep a daily diary, for his personal use only, written sometimes in cipher or in abbreviated longhand with several symbols such as u for but, and later in Byrom's shorthand, with only an occasional word in long­ hand. This diary he continued until 23rd February 1791--a week before his death-though the period from 9th August 1741 to 30th November 1782 is not represented even by fragments. From about the '.same·'early period, and again stretching through most of his life, he would prepare occasional memoranda (or "narra­ tives", to use his own frequent word) of the more significant events in his life-sometimes writing up a detailed report of an interview or an incident immediately after its occurrence, sometimes stringing to­ gether in literary form a series of related happenings over months or years, such as the 1738 account of his long spiritual pilgrimage. Overlapping with these in some respects was the continuous manu­ script journal which Wesley began to keep in Georgia, if not earlier, and apparently maintained throughout the major part of his life-a connected account of the major happenings of his daily activity, following the outlines of the diary, but expanded by the incorporation of individual memoranda (or portions of them), fuller details, and occasional improving reflections.

    DISCOVERY edited by Kenneth E. Rowe A Double Letter John Wesley and Thomas Coke to Freeborn Garrettson by J. Hamby Barton Dr. Rowe recently uncovered in the Drew archives this remarkable double letter: Wesley to Garrettson and, on the reverse of Wesley's letter,Coke to Garrettson. The sheet on which the letters are written is small, measuring 16 by 20 centimeters. Wesley's handwriting, though not strong is clearly legible. The cancelled lines, beginning "In", "way" and "self" are tantalizing but irrecoverable. From the bleed-through which blots Coke's letter it appears that Coke supplemented with a brush blot Wesley's simple "squiggle line" cancel (visible following "In"). The substitution of "States" for "Provinces" in the first paragraph is in Coke's hand as is the superscript "not" in paragraph2, line 2. Note the firmer strokes, the shape ofthe letters and the different slant. ".: At the time, February 1786, Wesley and Coke were togefher in London. Wesley's letter to John Stretton, written on February 26 also has a note from Coke referring to his intended visit to Nova Scotia. Coke had been away from England from September 1784 to June 1785 in the business of organizing the American Church. He continued in England through the 1786 Conference in Bristol when.William Hammet and John Clarke were appointed to Nova Scotia. Hammet was ordained by Wesley at the Conference together with William Warrener who was appointed to the West Indies. 59 60 METHODIST HISTORY Freeborn Garrettson was appointed to Nova Scotia together with James Cromwell by the American Christmas Conference in Baltimore, 1784-85.

    Luke 24:13-35 Thomas Coke Anniversary May 4, 2014 Bishop Thomas Bickerton, UMC John Wesley once said of Thomas Coke, “I creep like a louse, and the ground I cover I get, I keep; but the Doctor leaps like a flea, and is sometimes obliged to leap back.” There is no doubt that Thomas Coke’s call from God from so deep that he did leap relentlessly in the service of the gospel: Jaunts between U.S. & England (nine trips – took seven weeks to cross), West Indies (four trips), France, Africa (Sierra Leone), and Asia. Oversight of Methodist work in Ireland, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia Provision of Methodist missionaries in Scotland and Wales Organized Methodist societies, strengthened believers, encouraged missionary activity. The “Father of Methodist Missions.” An attorney/mayor of Brecon He gave himself away financially and called people to participate relentlessly. Someone once inquired, “Pray sir, do you know anything of a little fellow who calls himself Dr. Coke, and who goes about begging money for missionaries to be sent among slaves? He seems to be a heavenly-minded little devil; he coaxed me out of two guineas this morning.” He was, in the name of God, truly a heavenly-minded angel. He stated an ardent opposition to slavery/preached at the 1804 session of Congress of the United States. Died on trip to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and was buried at sea in the Indian Ocean Vickers: “in some respects the most important of John Wesley’s recruits to Methodism from the ranks of the Anglican clergy. He was certainly the most dedicated of Wesley’s clerical supporters.” Asbury, at his Memorial Sermon: “A gentleman, a scholar, a bishop to us; and as a minister of Christ, in zeal, in labours, in services, the greatest man in the last century.” All of this begs a very simple question: How do you become a flea? Each year I bring United Methodist ordinands from my Annual Conference to England on a Wesley Heritage Tour.

What is THE United Methodist Church? [History] Methodism began as a movement within the Church of England. The Methodist movement was born in England in the 1700s. John Wesley who is the founding father was an ordained Anglican priest. At a prayer meeting in London on May 24, 1738 at Aldersgate, John Wesley’s heart was “strangely warmed”; he felt for the first time that God truly loved him and had forgiven him that led him to become the first teacher of “Methodism.” He encouraged people to discern how they should live out our faith in Christ by looking at four important aspects in developing thoughts on God which is called “Wesleyan Quadrilateral”: Scripture, Tradition, Experience, and Reason.     The Foreign Minister of Methodism By Warren Thomas Smith Saturday, September 18, 1784, may have dawned as just another day in Bristol, England, but in the province of God it was highly significant. “At ten in the morning we sailed from King—Road for New York. A breeze soon sprung up, which carried us with the help of the tides, about a hundred leagues from Bristol by Monday morning . .” so Thomas Coke made the first entry in his Journal, a little volume published in 1793 and dedicated to John Wesley. The small vessel was not unlike other ships of the time, yet it was playing a role in an important scene of church history. Three of the passengers were to open a new chapter in the religious life of America. Of these one was a dedicated Welsh gentleman who would travel at least a hundred thousand miles on a hundred separate voyages as the Foreign Minister of Methodism and Ambassador of Jesus Christ. Thomas Coke was sailing as the executor of John Wesley’s design for the people called Methodists. It is doubtful that this plump little clergyman, who stood just five feet one inch, fully realized the significance of the voyage he was undertaking. A church was about to be born, and he was to be a key figure in the first moment of its breathing. Background of the Time We cannot form an estimate of the life and work of Thomas Coke without considering the time-spirit in which he lived: (1) His was to be a background of war and threat of war.

Yates Presented at Trinity United Methodist Church, Tallahassee September 13, 2017 Trinity United Methodist Church was organized in 1824, the same year Tallahassee was selected Capital of the Territory of Florida and 21 years before Florida became a state. This account of the church begins even earlier where worship of God always begins—in the hearts of people whose faith in their Creator compels them to share it with others. John Wesley of England had such a heart. He believed in social justice guided by Scripture and a personal relationship with God. He and his brother Charles Wesley, the great hymn writer, were the first missionaries in the new country of America. They came to the Georgia Colony in 1736 to teach the Georgian Indians the nature of Christianity. John returned to England a year and a few months later feeling he had failed his mission and that he himself was not yet converted. He continued work with the Holy Club of Oxford he had formed a decade earlier. During a gathering at Aldersgate he felt “his heart strangely warmed” and a new depth and certainty in religious living. Later he convened the first conference of the people called Methodist, thus beginning the Methodist Movement. He sent Francis Asbury and later Bishop Thomas Coke to organize the Methodist Episcopal Church in America (Betts, 1915, pp. 1, 3). The moral and religious state of the colonies at that time was very favorable for the start of this vital type of Christianity that put aside the dogmas and controversies of the European churches they left behind.

VICKERS I r When I became interested in Thomas Coke back in the 1950s, I was surprised how little seemed to be known about him~ and how much that was "known" proved to be wrong- or at the very least questionable. That was one thing which drew me to him. Another was the sheer variety of his commitments and act1ivities. To American Methodists, Coke is primarily Asbury's fellow bishop, who had a key role in the Christmas Conference in Baltimore and in the events that developed from it. To British Methodists (if indeed they have ever heard of him) Coke is first and last the "father of overseas missions" (and by that term we don't mean "converting the Americans''). And what is note­ worthy is this: his involvement in the formative days of the Methodist Episcopal Church and his pioneer role in overseas missions both date from the same year, 1784, and both occupied his time and energies concurrently during the years that followed. Coke was nothing if not a fireball of dedicated energy! It is as the missionary pioneer that Thomas Coke deserves our attention. For a seemingly definitive statement about the origin of British Methodist overseas missions we may turn to the Constitution of the Methodist Missionary Society (popularly known as the MMS, and now the Overseas Division). This was adopted in 1943, and states: "From the beginning of Methodist Overseas Missions at the Conference of 1786, the initiation, direction and support of Overseas Missions have been under­ taken by the Conference ..." and it goes on to claim: "The Methodist Missionary Society is none othet than the Methodist Church itself orga­ nised for Overseas Missions .
