A Rollicking Good Time...By Michael D.Most likely because he served in the merchant (albeit at that time, armed) marine, Thomas Boyle may be one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated naval heroes in American history. His bold and charismatic captaincy of the sleek, rakish CHASSEUR (and before that, as captain of the almost-equally successful privateer, COMET), produced prolific profits and resounding results not only for the largely Baltimore-based syndicates of businessmen which owned the ships he captained, but, more importantly, for the struggling United States Government and its fledgling navy. In this book, Barry Warburton celebrates Boyle in his last rollicking, yet bloody, adventure on perhaps the most famous armed privateer ship in American history. The author combines keen accuracy regarding historical facts with a clear expertise in nineteenth century sailing and naval terms of engagement. A must read for those familiar with the now extremely large (and not always well-written) library of "Age of Fighting Sail" novels. Certainly on par with many of the more well-regarded of such Napoleonic Age naval novels. You will be entertained: Warburton has ensured that Tom Boyle commanding CHASSEUR on her final cruise of the War of 1812 will see to that.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not-bad but could have been pretty goodBy R. BarrowsWell, I just finished this last night, and it was a not-bad read that would have been a pretty good read but for some minor flaws.Flaw 1:You see, I was reading it and the author keeps switching back and forth between past and present tense ... oh wait, now he's got me doing it ... Seriously, this happens throughout the book, the first example appears on the first page.Flaw 2:Every so often conversations occur with no quotation marks. To be fair, this might be a Kindle transcription problem - the quotation marks would vanish on one page and return on the next.Once I got used to the time-shifting, I found it to be an enjoyable read despite the somewhat cartoonish characters and abrupt ending. Plenty of skooning, sailing and action to keep me interested. Especially the sailing and skooning - it was the passages about the handling of the schooner that really made this book enjoyable for me.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Lots of funBy C. HerronWell, I have to say I expected something a bit more scholarly - BUT instead I got a rolicking fun adventure novel.I ended up getting two so I could share it with a friend. The American privateer schooner Chasseur and her intrepid Captain Tom Boyle set sail Christmas Eve 1814 from New York and slipped past the waiting English frigates. Shaping a course for the Caribbean, Boyle and his crew confound the English at every turn, until, off the coast of Cuba, they meet with another schooner and are in for the fight of their lives.
