Sacrificing Steve
Cultural Studies Review volume 16 number 2 September 2010 http://epress.lib.uts.edu.au/journals/index.php/csrj/index pp. 179–93 Luke Carman 2010 Sacrificing Steve How I Killed the Crocodile Hunter LUKE CARMAN UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN SYDNEY There has been a long campaign claiming that in a changed world and in a changed Australia, the values and symbols of old Australia are exclusive, oppressive and irrelevant. The campaign does not appear to have succeeded.1 Let’s begin this paper with a peculiar point of departure. Let’s abjure for the moment the approved conventions of academic discussion and begin not with the obligatory expounding of some contextualising theoretical locus, but instead with an immersion much more personal. Let’s embrace the pure, shattering honesty of humiliation. Let’s begin with a tale of shame and, for the sake of practicality, let’s make it mine. Early in September 2006, I was desperately trying to finish a paper on Australian representations of masculinity. The deadline had crept up on me, and I was caught struggling for a focusing point. I wanted a figure to drape my argument upon, one that would fit into a complicated and altogether shaky coagulation of ideas surrounding Australian icons, legends and images—someone who perfectly ISSN 1837-8692 straddled an exploration of masculine constructions within a framework of cringing insecurities and historical silences. I could think of men, I could think of iconic men, and I could think of them in limitless abundance, but none of them encapsulated everything I wanted to say. -

She wanted him to donate to the school in honor of her mother, UW alumnae, Harriet Rosenbaum, in order to put dedicated, well-trained social workers into the field as quickly as possible while reducing the financial barriers to earning the degree. When Sandy passed away that summer, Joel was determined to fulfill that promise. He’s done that and much more. 'Walking Dead' Returns
Everyone's Sheathing Their Weapons When 'Walking Dead' Returns 09.10.2018 When AMC's monster hit, The Walking Dead, returns for season nine, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his crew have recovered after the all-out war against Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his Saviors. In the season-eight finale, Rick decided to do what he thought his late son, Carl (Chandler Riggs), would have done and spared Negan's life, but that was not what everyone in his group would have chosen. Now it's a year and a half later, and both groups have rebuilt and are living in a tentative peace. The survivors are getting further away from the apocalyptic sickness that ended civilization as they knew it, and man-made structures are fading and failing as the survivors strive ever on. In the trailer above, each cast member is portrayed with a mesmerizing kaleidoscope effect designed by creative agency Bacon & Sons. All of them are seen sheathing their weapons, indicating that the time to fight has ended-at least for now. Later in the season, the Whisperers, who fans knows from the comics, will show up, led by Alpha who is played by Samantha Morton. Season nine-which returns Sunday, Oct. 7 at 9/8 c on AMC-also will be star Andrew Lincoln's last. The premiere will run a super-sized hour and a half and be followed by a new episode of aftershow Talking Dead. The Walking Dead is based on the graphic novel created by robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics. -

Page 2 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I cannot express enough gratitude to everyone who believed in me on this crazy and fantastic journey; everything you have done has molded me into the person I am today. To my family, who taught me to seek out my own purpose and pursue it wholeheartedly; without you, I would have never taken the chance and moved to England for my Masters. To my professors, who became my trusted resources and friends, your endless and caring teachings have supported me in more ways than I can put into words. To my friends who have never failed to make me smile, I am so lucky to have you in my life. Finally, a special thanks to David Attenborough, Steve Irwin, Terri Irwin, Jane Goodall, Peter Gros, Jim Fowler, and so many others for making me fall in love with wildlife and spark a fire in my heart for their welfare. I grew up on wildlife films and television shows like Planet Earth, Blue Planet, March of the Penguins, Crocodile Hunter, Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, Shark Week, and others – it was because of those programs that I first fell in love with nature as a kid, and I’ve taken that passion with me, my whole life. -

It’s important for the future of the university.” — Betsy Calvo Anderson ’70, HON J.D. ’15, P ’00 YOUR LEGACY FOR ALL TIME COMING. “ Why do I give? I feel lucky to have a unique perspective on William & Mary. As a Muscarelle Museum of Art Foundation board member, an emeritus member of the William & Mary Law School Foundation board and a past president of the Alumni Association, I’ve seen first-hand the resources and commitment it takes to keep William & Mary on the leading edge of higher education — and how diligently the university puts our contributions to work. My late husband, Alvin ’70, J.D. ’72, would be happy to know that in addition to continuing our more than 40-year legacy of annual giving, I’ve included our alma mater in my estate plans. Grassroots Resistance
HUMAN VALUES—INSIGHTS, IMPLICATIONS, APPLICATIONS Grassroots Resistance Marjorie Harris Carr, Ecology, and the Battle to Stop the Cross Florida Barge Canal Leslie Kemp Poole Rollins College n the 1960s the U.S. government began construction of a long-held dream—creating a watery transportation canal I across north Florida to shorten treacherous trade routes. The project promised an infusion of federal dollars and new jobs in this mostly rural area and was considered a “done deal.” That is, until Marjorie Harris Carr (1915–1997) led Florida’s first major grassroots crusade to stop the project from harming the state’s fragile environment. Using facts and the science of ecology, and by engaging the media, Carr and company achieved the seemingly impossible—stopping a major federal public works project in its tracks and setting the stage for future environmental skirmishes across the state and nation. They proved that a skeptical citizenry well-armed with data and determination could overcome the questionable promises of politicians and bureaucrats, leading to a court decision and presidential edict that supported their contention that the potential for environmental damage needs to be assessed before boondoggle projects are undertaken. Since the early days of Spanish occupation in Florida, settlers shared a dream of building a canal across the peninsula to link the Gulf of Mexico with the Atlantic Ocean. This canal would greatly improve the passage of the Spanish treasure fleets that might avoid the treacherous Straits of Florida to the south, an area of shallows, coral reefs, hurricanes, pirates, and “wreckers.” Canal fever continued into the ensuing centuries, and the first U.S.
