Send info to 22318 84th Ave S. [email protected] Kent, WA 98032 Noon World Polio Day This will be a “Don Gregory Production” and all about our progress with eradicating polio from the earth. It’s a good news story. This is the day in 1945 that the United Nations was born. Andy was born two years later. Scribe: Your Humble Scribe™ Invocation/Inspiration: Becky Hanks At the Last Meeting October 17, 2017 Your Humble Scribe™ was present and taking notes. In a blatant attempt to “earn points,” Billy the Pez rang the bell at EXACTLY 12:30 to begin our meeting. He displayed a photo of a baseball player and asked what happened on this day in 1835. Of course, no one knew. Turns out the Texas Rangers moved from outlaws to law enforcement. Nothing about baseball after all! With that, Harry Williams led us in an “Exciting” Pledge of Allegiance with no one taking a knee (that I could see). Ryan Rehberg was AWOL (despite Billy the Prez having a Disney graphic on the big screen), so Andy Wangstad delivered an inspirational quote: “Nobody makes you angry; You decide to use anger as a response.” Well, isn’t that true. New Member Kay Cook has proposed Coleen Perry for membership with the classification of Commercial Moving and Logistics. Please direct comments and concerns to Billy or Julie Shott (Second Notice) Introductions Julie Shott introduced past member Mark Burns, who is interested in re-joining. He’s a representative for Waddell & Reed. Other guests were ADG Bill MacCully and Matt Skaggs. Well, well - Matt seems to know everyone in the room, despite being a Meridian Kiwanian. How in the world did they get him before us??? Matt, marketing honcho at Denali FCU, is finding someone there to join Rotary. Announcements We have a great new tool - Julie Shott is printing out a sheet with our announcements of upcoming events on it! All of our upcoming events are on there as well as a contact person. If you have an announcement, just get information to Julie before the meeting and she’ll add it to the list. Huzzah for Julie! Oct 24 - World Polio Day at the Gates Foundation, Community Service Ctte meets at 5:30 pm Oct 28 - KYFS One Experience Dinner at the Pavilion in Renton. Oct 31 - Board meeting at Mitzels, noon 4:30 pm Halloween at Kent Station 6:00 pm- Rotary After Hours at Agave Cantina, Kent Station Nov. 5 - Open House at Rock Steady Boxing, 18527 272nd St, Covington, 1:00-3:00 pm Nov. 8 - Networking with Rotary, location TBD Birthday We had one birthday to celebrate - Warren Secord!! He turned 81 on Wednesday. He asked daughter Kim Walley to lead the song, and what a good job she did! Happy Bucks Dawn Colston collected the Happy Bucks. Kim was happy about a singer with Dakota Foreman, recent act at ShoWare. Turns out he was a graduate of Kim’s Talent Shows in Maple Valley and, of course, she was happy about her dad’s birthday! Mike Sellar had 30 sweaty bucks for his Rock Steady Boxing group. Huzzah for Mike! Jim Fox bid adieu as he (and Alice) are departing for warmer climes, but he was happy about a road trip with grandsons, driving from Fox Electric project to project, ending up with a huge warehouse project in Portland. Cliff Ridgway was NOT happy about a Coug football game, but was happy about a Columbia Bank work party at Northwest Harvest, where he was giving away food that was packaged at Rotary First Harvest. Touching note - a recipient of 4 ears of corn said that it was too much, and asked that it be given to someone else. He also said that he’s moving (again) to another bank. [Editor’s Note: Columbia Bank? Will Cliff FINALLY be at a bank where I have an account?] Josh Gerstman was a big winner at the Kent Chamber of Commerce EXPO and was busy with community events all week, ending at the Kent Food Bank breakfast on Friday morning with Rotarians filling a very generous table. Alex Henning is still supporting the Cougars. Sean Runnels thanked T-bird fans for supporting the team (even Matt) and then went on about dad-time with kids at the Pumpkin Patch. One happy guy, eh? Robin thanked Andy for recruiting Rotarians for the Multi-Service luncheon on Thursday and apologized for leaving early as she had a radio interview. Julie Shott also spent time with grandkids at the Pumpkin Patch. Bill MacCully was proud of Rotary’s progress in eradicating polio. Matt Skaggs’ Kiwanis Club is hosting an employment exercise at KM on Thursday morning. Kay came in late and added some bucks. Upside: Her recent CT scan showed that her cancer is all-but-gone. On the down side, this morning her car was struck in a hit-and-run. Getting the rental car made her late. And some sad news from Bill Sroufe: I took a fall on concrete, broke my Femur bone (leg) and a rod was inserted at Valley Medical Center. For eight weeks I will be recovering at Kline-Galland. The quality of care at both places has been better than excellent! Using a walker, I did 127 steps yesterday. The food’s good and it’s kosher, although I got caught Sunday with a Dick’s hamburger and a milkshake (can’t mix meat with dairy and still be kosher) My response was, “Hey, I’m only 1/64 Jewish, give me a break.” The response was “You already got a break, you broke your Femur!” Anyway, I miss you guys, keep up the good work! Classification Talk - Jon Bye So who is this new guy with the Corporate Membership? Jon was 7 when his parents divorced and he came to Kent. His mother and step-dad operated a Day Care near Reber Ranch and he started working early. Upside - he was among a very few 12 year olds that had some money! Although living in Kent, he attended Auburn H.S. He worked for several years at Competition Specialties - a car parts supplier in Auburn. He early on decided that rent was money wasted and bought his first home when he was 21. He befriended the realtor and ended up working for him to learn the business. He’s been in real estate for 14 years now, with 90% of his business coming from referrals. He’s building a team to assist (up to 9 now) and the corporate membership works well for them. They specialize in south King County and north Pierce county, but will take a listing anywhere - and work it the best that they can! He’s engaged to be married in June and lives in Kennydale with two dogs. BTW, she’s a loan officer. Program Well, our program was unable to make it, so we identified pasta. Harder than it would seem! Next Week Be sure to buy a wrist band from Allyson ($5) for polio eradication and go online to make a big contribution! They’re matched this month! We take time to go to a restaurant two times a week. A little candlelight, dinner, soft music, and dancing. She goes Tuesdays, I go Fridays.” ~ Henny Youngman We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light. ~ Plato “Our quarterback doesn’t know the meaning of the word fear. In fact, I just saw his grades and he doesn’t know the meaning of a lot of words.” ~ Mike Leach* *Fake News.
