FRIDAY the 13TH: the MICROS PLAY MONK (Cuneiform Rune 310)

Like the maverick bebop pianist, they persevere... Their expanding core audience thrives on the group’s impeccable arrangements, terse, angular solos, and devil-may-care attitude. But Monk and the Micros have something else in common as well. Johnston tells a story: “Someone once walked up to Monk and said, “You know, Monk, people are laughing at your music.’ Monk replied, ‘Let ‘em laugh. People need to laugh a little more.” – Richard Gehr, Newsday, New York 1989 “There is immense power and careful logic in the music of Thelonious Sphere Monk. But you might have such a good time listening to it that you might not even notice. …His tunes… warmed the heart with their odd angles and bright colors. …he knew exactly how to make you feel good… The groove was paramount: When you’re swinging, swing some more,” he’d say...” – Vijay Iyer, “Ode to a Sphere,” JazzTimes, 2010 “When I replace Letterman… The band I'm considering…is the Microscopic Septet, a New York saxophone-quartet-plus-rhythm whose riffs do what riffs are supposed to do: set your pulse racing and lodge in your skull for days on end. … their humor is difficult to resist. -

Without a doubt, Cobra is Zorn’s most popular and well-known composition and one that has enjoyed remarkable success and innumerable performances all over the world since its premiere in late 1984 at the New York City club, Roulette. Some noteworthy performances of Cobra include those played by a group of jazz journalists and critics, an all-women performance, and a hip-hop ver- sion as well!1 At the same time, Cobra is routinely played by students in colleges and universities all over the world, ensuring that the work will continue to grow and evolve in the years to come. -

Dating Advice: Is Spring the Time for a New Fling?
Celebrity Interview: ‘Mob Wives’ Marissa Jade Says Marriage & Kids Are Not In Her Future Interview by Lori Bizzoco. Written by Dena Linzer Mob Wives reality TV star, Marissa Fiore (also known as Marissa Jade), may comes across as the ultimate diva and tough girl on television but in our recent interview with her, we learned that there’s a lot more to this doting mother of one than meets the eye. This goal-oriented actress may not be very well known in the “mob” community, but she does hope to become a household name for her acting, modeling and career endeavors. In our latestcelebrity interview on CupidsPulse.com, we had the pleasure of chatting with Jade about her career, her son, and her relationship status. Reality TV Star Marissa Jade Talks About Her Relationship In Celebrity Interview Despite it being the show’s last season, Mob Wives added a few newcomers, including Fiore and Brittany Fogarty. Fiore was infamous for arguments with some of the other cast members, but does not have any regrets. “I’m very happy with the way I portrayed myself,” she says. While some reality TV stars may watch their show and have a cringe worthy moment, Fiore says looking back on the episodes there was no cringe-moment for her. However, she does recall an episode where she showed up in the ‘wrong’ outfit, but says that she doesn’t regret it. “I thought that I was attending a beach party.” she confessed. Little did she realize she was having a sit-down and fight with Fogarty. -

Roots Report: Bitter Fingers
Roots Report: Bitter Fingers Okee dokee folks …”It’s hard to write a song with bitter fingers.” That line comes from the Elton John/Bernie Taupin song from the Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy album, and I’ve always identified with it. Writing songs when you are not in the proper frame of mind can be a difficult task. Writing anything in general can be challenging when your head isn’t in the game. One’s emotions can fuel inspiration, but they can also dampen it. I have heard a lot of songwriters say, “Never piss off a songwriter. They will write a song about you,” but in my case, it may take a while for the bitter fingers to compose a wrathful rhyme. Unfortunately I’ve had a lot of experience doing this. I really don’t need anymore ill-tempered inspiration, but it just keeps coming. Can you tell that I am in a foul mood? I will stop my venting and get on with writing about music stuff. We are full swing into winter and it doesn’t matter what Punxsutawney Phil has to say; we still have 43 days on the calendar until spring. Just make sure that you have a warm coat and good snow tires and plan your forays well. Even though it may be inhospitable outside there are a lot of great songs to hear inside. Not all of them sour. They are probably, mostly, inspiring and happy. Maybe I need a dose of this musical medicine. Read on. Common Fence Music has a fabulous February in store. -

The blues-drenched Picasso of rock music, Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) created a series of recordings from the 1960s to early 1980s that shattered assumptions regarding how modern American popular music could, or even should, be composed and interpreted. Before leaving music to pursue a life- long interest in painting, he created 10 albums of astonishingly creative music that shattered conventions in popular music as profoundly as cubism had impacted modern painting a half century before. -
