MINERAL PRODUCTION AND RESOURCES

The map area includes Canada's most important uranium mining camp, the Elliot Lake area, discovered in 1953, as well as the first commercially successful copper mine in Canada which began pro duction in 1847 at . At the present time (1977) the area is producing uranium, sand, gravel, and ornamental stone. In the past the area has also produced gold, lead, copper, zinc, silver, yttrium, thorium, silica, traprock and clay. Within the map area there are also occurrences of bismuth, cobalt, iron, kaolin, molybdenum, nickel and niobium. The total value of all mineral production from the map area, to the end of 1975 is approximately $1,750,000,000.

Charts of Lakes Huron and Superior may be obtained from the Canadian Hydrographic Service, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa. Charts of the St. Marys River are available from the U.S. Lake Survey, U.S. Corps of Engineers, 630, Federal Building, Detroit, Michigan 48226. Additional geological maps and photo-mosaics may be obtained from the Algoma Central Railway, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Mining claim maps and information on geology, mines, and min eral occurrences may be obtained from the Ministry of Natural Re sources offices at Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury or Toronto. The name and ownership of many mineral occurrences shown on this map are given on Map 2310, Ontario Mineral Map, 1974. Up-to-date information on current developments of the minerals industry may be obtained from the Annual Review of the Division of Mines and the Annual Report of the Resident Geologists (Sault Ste.
