Wicked Karnival October 2006
INTERVIEW WITH NOX ARCANA by Josh Haney Wicked Karnival October 2006 Could you give us a brief history of how you got started? Who does what in the band? Joseph: I began my career as a gothic fantasy artist, selling posters, t-shirts and calendars of my work through my own company, Monolith Graphics, and by 1997, I had established a large audience in the gothic realm. In 1998, I came up with the idea of doing a Halloween music CD that would sound like a soundtrack to a gothic horror movie. I branched out and began producing gothic soundtrack music with another band, but we parted ways after two albums. William and I were old friends and we formed Nox Arcana in 2003. He was very enthusiastic about the project and within a few weeks, we were in the studio working on the initial tracks for Darklore Manor. We work on all of our music together, although I’m more of the composer and William is the better musician. I write the majority of the basic melodies then we work together to flesh them out to create more elaborate compositions. We mix every song together but William handles all the engineering and mastering. I develop the concepts and write the lyrics. I also create the artwork and work together Since 2003 Joseph Vargo and William Piotrowski have been conjuring with Christine Filipak to design the CD the darkest realms imaginable, created solely through their musical packaging. project Nox Arcana, Latin for mysteries of the night. Cinema Vérité & Direct Cinema 1960-1970
Cinema Vérité & Direct Cinema 1960-1970 Historical context Cinéma verité: French film movement of the 1960s that showed people in everyday situations with authentic dialogue and naturalness of action. Rather than following the usual technique of shooting sound and pictures together, the filmmaker first tapes actual conversations, interviews and opinions. After selecting the best material, he films the visual material to fit the sound, often using a hand-held camera. The film is then put together in the cutting room. Encyclopedia Britannica Direct Cinema: The invention of relatively inexpensive, portable, but thoroughly professional 16 mm equipment – and the synchronous sound recorder – facilitated the development of a similar movement in the US at just about the same time. Sometimes called cinema verite, sometimes simply ‘direct cinema’, its goal was essentially the capturing of the reality of a person, a moment, or an event without any rearrangement for the camera. Leading American practitioners were Ricky Leacock (Primary, 1960), Frederick Wiseman (Titicut Follies, 1967), Donn Pennebaker (Monterey Pop, 1968) and the Maysles brothers (Salesman, 1969) Encyclopedia Britannica Technological changes Until 1960s synchronous recording of sight & sound on location – difficult to impossible Standard documentary sound-film method - shooting silent - subsequent addition of sound – words, music, sound effects - voice-over commentary (almost) obligatory adds information & interpretation e.g. Grierson, Lorentz This style characterizes documentaries -

Impact of Audiovisual Culture in Roberto Sierra's
Dalí’s Eccentric Imagination: Impact of Audiovisual Culture in Roberto Sierra’s Sch SILVIA LAZO University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Abstract From the appearance of sound film in the late 1920s to the spread of media outlets such as television and personal computers to today’s video-enabled mobile phones, the immediacy of audiovisual culture has changed the way people navigate and manipulate content. Visual images often instinctively induce aural and musical associations, and vice versa. Yet musical analysis in audiovisual culture often presumes the constraint of the visual on the musical (i.e., the primacy of a visual product over its accompanying music). In this paper, I take a diverging approach. I present Roberto Sierra’s Sch. as a case study for the effects of multimedia technology in a twenty-first- century composer’s creative process and product, which conjures up the imagination in historical and contemporary ways. This investigation complements research in music analysis, film music, and music pedagogy in relation to audiovisual culture by highlighting the mutually influential effects of musical and visual cultures. Keywords: Latin American music, audiovisual culture, music imagination. -

Throughout the course of the day, the film branches across the city, capturing mini-narratives, bits of conversation, and tableau of civic activity in the public sphere. It is less concerned with the quantitative facts of the day as it is with conveying the transitory social expressions and moods of a modern, southern city on a uniquely American day.
