The Citizens Post DAVOs diary

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to everyone for today’s exciting FA Cup 1st qualifying round tie against Taunton Town. We wish Taunton’s players, staff and supporters a pleasant stay with us and a safe trip home afterwards, they are a club I have a great deal of respect for and are a very good side from the league above, our very own Keith Emmerson is well known to them having played a good part in their rise over the last 18 months or so. Without a doubt it’s a tough game but one we are very excited about.

We managed to earn this with an extremely good and professional display away at AFC Stoneham on Tuesday night, many claimed they were favourites for the game as they had nicked a draw against us in the 1st game in the last minute and had put in a good display against us, in my opinion that was disrespectful of my group as we had played without 3 of our forwards on the day and had been rarely troubled in the game despite playing poorly by our standards, talk of their deserving to have beaten us on the day I just don’t agree with. We went there very confident on what is a very very poor and bumpy pitch, we still felt we had more than enough to show why we were the higher league side. Our cause was not helped by a ludicrous sending off for an unfortunate coming together and their player falling and smashing his head on the ground leaving him groggy and a bleeding nose, the ref in his wisdom and to the surprise of everyone (all of their team and management even) sent Rob Carr off in the first minute!i must say the referee went onto have a very very poor game I hasten to add and we had to keep our cool as best we could, we also had a mountain to climb with 10 men for so long. One thing that is guaranteed with our lads is their togetherness and also their fitness levels and we limited Stoneham to 1 shot on goal in the first half, we scored twice with blistering counters Oli Bailey scoring 1 and Jamie Barron the other on stroke of half time. 2nd half we contained them and they were launching long balls at us to defend which we did except for 1 corner that they scored a header from. We made 3 changes and closed up the game very well and even got a 3rd through Griggsy with another excellent break! A very pleasing performance and brilliantly executed game plan by the lads after going down to 10 men after a minute or so!

That win came hot on the heels of a brilliant 3-0 win on Saturday against Melksham, goals from Bailey x2 and Balmer gave us a that result and we were very pleased with the controlled way we dealt with them.

Player news we are at a full compliment today with Liam Gilbert back available following work commitment, we are likely to be missing Max Smith who is ill but other than that we are full strength.

I hope everyone enjoys the game and can get behind the lads as we will need it, let’s hope we can do something special again, whatever happens though there is no pressure on us, we will just go and give it a good go and see how it goes.

Up the citizens!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TAUNTON TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

The present Taunton Town Football Club was formed in December 1947 by a few local businessmen and played their first friendly fixture during Easter 1948. They then played on a number of grounds such as Mountfields, French Weir, Victoria Park, Huish Old Boys and finished up at Denman’s Park, Haines Hill.

Having joined and played in the Somerset Senior League, 1953 became a notable year. The club gained admission into the Western League and moved into Wordsworth Drive, their present home, on a lease agreement with the Taunton Borough Council.

The club struggled financially and depended heavily on a very active Supporters Club during the late 50s and early 60s. 1968/69 saw an upsurge in the club’s fortunes with manager Doug Hillard securing the Western League championship for the first time.

During the middle 1970s Ron Gingell became manager and the club were runners up for four consecutive seasons. The 70s was also highlighted by the club purchasing the ground from Taunton Borough Council and the installation of floodlights. During 1977 the club gained election to the Southern League Division One (South) and two years later the reorganisation of the leagues caused by the establishing of the Alliance Premier League saw Taunton Town transfer to the Midland Division to take advantage of the M5 motorway.

The club became a limited company in 1981. The new board soon decided that Southern League football was too expensive and the club reverted to the Western League in 1983. Seven years later the championship pennant returned to Wordsworth Drive under the management of Keith Bowker.

In 1994 the team then managed by Terry Rowles battled through to the F A Vase final at Wembley Stadium but Diss Town won the trophy in extra time.

Russell Musker was appointed manager in November 1994 and another championship followed in 1996. After two seasons as runners up three consecutive titles followed together with the club’s first ever Cup success – a 2 – 1 victory over Berkhamsted Town in the F A Carlsberg Vase final at Aston Villa’s newly modernised Villa Park stadium. This ended a sequence of 18 defeats in cup finals since the 1950s. Another Cup victory was achieved in 2003, lifting the Somerset Premier Cup for the first time with a 2-1 win over Yeovil Town in a final played at Clevedon Town’s Hand Stadium. Peter Beadle took over as Manager in 2005 amid great optimism but left after only 14 games to join Newport County and former Hallen manager Gary Domone stepped into the hot seat – after a disappointing start results began to improve and the club won its second Somerset Premier Cup by beating a strong Mangots- field United side at Weston super Mare. Domone resigned as Manager in December 2007 and was replaced by Ian Jones, who himself resigned in April 2009.

Former player Paul West, who lifted the F A Vase in 2001, took over and rebuilt the team with a local emphasis. West left the club in May 2012 and was replaced by Leigh Robinson. In the previous season the club finished with a run of nine consecutive victories culminating with the club’s third Somerset Premier Cup triumph, beating Frome Town 1-0 in the final played at Paulton Rovers FC. This was especially notable as no goals were conceded in five games. The club also won the Southern League Groundsman of the Year award in 2013-2014, a remarkable achievement considering the floods which affected the area causing the ground to be under water for much of January and February.

In July 2010 Tom Harris stepped down as Chairman after 29 years and was replaced by Kevin Sturmey who also took on the roles of Chief Executive and Head Groundsman. Since then the club have made major improvements on and off the pitch, continuing to maintain the ambi- tions to play at a higher level.

Off the field the club suffered a major blow in July 2011 when the clubhouse was badly damaged by a fire which was caused by an electrical fault – what remained of the clubhouse was extensively smoke damaged and the whole building had to be demolished. A mobile bar was brought in on matchdays but the following year a modular building was opened despite the original builder going into administration.

2014-2015 was one of the most successful seasons in recent history with fourth place in the League, and the retention of the Somerset Premier Cup, beating Yeovil Town in the final. We also retained the Southern League Groundsman of the Year award and were in face voted the second best club at Step 3 & 4. Our programme also won a prestigious award being voted the best in the Southern League and 18th nationally.

The club reached the play offs for three seasons in a row but finally last season it all clicked and the West Division title was clinched by a massive 19 points with only one League defeat all season.

Manager Leigh Robinson and his assistant Michael Meaker left in September but the club maintained its successful run under head of football Rob Dray, assisted by coach Matt Villis. The club finished runners up in the Southern League Premier Division South, but lost out to Poole Town in the end of season play offs as well as reaching the Fourth qualifying Round of the FA Cup before losing 1-0 to Billericay Town in a replay.

The club has added some more quality players and are hopeful of more success this season. TAUNTON Ioc..

Match Report By Malcolm Clarke WINCHESTER CITY 3 - 0 MELKSHAM TOWN After drawing their two games over the Bank Holiday period Winchester returned to winning ways with a 3-0 win against Melksham.

Last season Melksham lost their manager during the season with a lot of players leaving at the same time, with as a result playing in both matches against Winchester. This season they have again made several changes with a new management duo of Richard Fay and Nathan Rudge coming in. They started the season with a high scoring victory against Slimbridge, but they went into Saturday's game having lost their last two league games.

Winchester for their part made two changes to the starting line-up from Monday with Rob Carr returning after being unavailable and Oli Bailey being fit enough to start. They replaced Kieran Douglas and Max Smith with the first named being on the substitutes bench.

Winchester made an excellent start with in the 4th minute Jamie Barron setting up Oli Bailey to score. They had several chances to add to their lead in the first half having hit the post and seen Jamie Barron shoot just wide from Ollie Griggs cross. On a couple of other occasions Liam Kingston just beat Oli Bailey to the ball and Kingston also made a couple of other saves to keep Winchester out and one sensed that perhaps Winchester could be made to pay for not making more of the fact that they were very much in control of the midfield battle, especially when Jack Ball who has been Melksham's leading scorer to date forced Ryan Pryce to block at the expense of a corner.

However any uncomfortable feeling amongst Winchester fans was eased somewhat at the start of the second half when straight from the kick off Ollie Balmer broke clear and put the ball away for his first Southern League goal in Winchester colours. Balmer also forced a good save from Kingston and Liam Gilbert had a shot saved at the expense of a corner, while at the other end Ryan Pryce saved from Liam Monellr and Luke Ballinger, while substitute Chris Allen also came close. However the Winchester goalkeeper was only really required to make saves of a routine nature.

Perhaps if Melksham could have got a goal back it would have set up an interesting finale, but Winchester made the game safe in the 81st minute when Kingston could only parry Liam Gilbert's effort and Oli Bailey was on hand to tuck the ball away. In the second half Winchester introduced I K Hill and Joe Hayward as second half substitutes, as they completed a good win, For me personally it was a busy day with my cricket scoring duties meaning that I attended this match after taxi journeys to and from the ground, but I did have the satisfaction of seeing victories in both sporting contests and the Non League football paper using my report of this game that I sent them.

If Winchester win Tuesday's F A Cup replay with AFC Stoneham they are at home to Taunton Town on Saturday,

Winchester under 18's lost 2-1 to their Moneyfields counterparts with their goal being a splendid individual effort from George Bishop. FA Cup First Round Ties to be played 6-9 September

We welcome Taunton Town to Winchester for today’s F A Cup 1st qualifying round tie. To reach this stage of the competition we beat AFC Stoneham in a replay last Tuesday and that victory achieved by goals from Oli Bailey, Jamie Barron and Ollie Griggs has given Keith Emmerson a chance to play against his former club and he was player coach with them last season. The only national cup game between the two clubs saw Winchester win an F A Trophy match 3-0 in 2008/09, but our league record against them is P14 W1 D4 L9, with Taunton winning the last game between the two clubs 5-0 on this ground in April 2018 with Matt Wright scoring a hat-trick.

In 2017/18 Taunton comfortably won this division and were promoted to the Southern League Premier Division where they finished runners up last season, but were beaten in the playoffs on penalties by Polle Town.. This season they surprisingly lost to Yate Town and Gosport Borough, but since then have obtained 10 points from their last four league games. Taunton’s best seasons in the F A Cup were 1981/82 and 2016/17 when they reached the 1st round proper, but were defeated by Swindon Town and Barrow respectively. They have on five other occasions reached the 4th qualifying round of the competition, one of which was last season.

Today’s match is between the county town of Hampshire and the county town of Somerset and both teams are previous winners of the F A Vase, with Taunton winning the competition in 2000/01 and being losing finalists in 1993/94. Today’s opponents in fact boast an impressive F A Vase pedigree as in 10 seasons in the competition they not only reached 2 finals, but also appeared in 2 semi finals, 2 quarter finals, the 5th round twice and the 4th round twice, and only in their first season in the competition did they fail to make an impact.

Taunton was for many years a major landmark in non-league football with the surrounding area of Helland/North Curry being where you purchased your non-league directory (the non-league football fan’s bible) with Tony Williams whose contribution to non-league football is legendary living there, and James Wright who still; reports on Taunton games also making a major contribution to non-league football.

My first memory of Taunton Town (they changed their name from Taunton in 1968) was when they and Falmouth were the best teams in the Western League and they finished runners up in four consecutive seasons (They had previously won the title in their first season following the merger). It was perhaps that after following up their four successive second placed finishes with 9th place they finally joined the Southern League where they spent six seasons before rejoining the Western League.

They won the Western League title again in 1989/90, but just as the period 1992/93 to 2001/02 saw them perform consistently well in the F A Vase, it also saw them perform well in the league, and they finished champions 4 times, runners up 4 times, 3rd once and 4th once, and scored 996 goals in the process. This run of success enabled them to return to the Southern League and they have remained there ever since. In 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 they finished 4th, 3rd and 4th respectively, but in each case they failed to win promotion through the playoffs (Last season they lost to Tiverton in the playoff semi final). Their best season in the F A Trophy was 2003/04 when they reached the 3rd round proper where they lost to Worthing Former Taunton Town players Gerry Cakebread, Cliff Myers senior and Percival Whitton have all played in the football league.

In addition to football the town of Taunton also hosts first class cricket where Somerset are a county who have had many fine players over the years play.

.For me personally last week marked the end of the cricket season which meant that my travel arrangements to the Melksham game involved a taxi to and from the ground, so that I missed as little cricket as possible while still carrying out my football reporting duties. It should be back to normal today and I should be able to spend more time with people before and after the game.

This weekend 12 of the 20 clubs in our division are in F A Cup action. Of these Thatcham, Mangotsfield, Evesham, Cirencester and ourselves face opponents from a higher division, Cinderford and Bideford play each other, Moneyfields and Willand Rovers face opposition from the same level, while Bristol Manor Farm, Sholing and Highworth Town all face opposition from the Toolstation Western League. Match Report By Malcolm Clarke

AFC STONEHAM 1 - 3 WINCHESTER CITY Winchester progressed to the 1st qualifying round of the F A Cup with a 3-1 win against AFC Stoneham and will play Taunton Town at home in the next round. They had to pay 88 minutes with 10 men after Rob Carr was shown a straight red card.

Having last been to this ground when Pirelli General played there it was noticeable that with all the building work going on in the area access was very different and I arrived later than I had originally planned.

Winchester made one change to the starting line-up from Saturday with Simba Mlambo now returned from holiday coming in For Liam Gilbert who often finds midweek games difficult to manage.

However after 2 minutes Winchester were down to 10 men when Rob Carr caught Aaron Dunne who lost several teeth and suffered concussion, which required him to go to hospital;. There seemed to be no intent on the part of Rob Carr and I was surprised to see the red card shown. I will not say anything more about this incident, except to say that concern for the injured player was shown by both clubs and it is good that Dunne has been able to respond to the good wishes he has received.

Winchester took the lead in the 14th minute when Oli Bailey took advantage of hesitancy in the home defence and rounded the goalkeeper before slotting home. After the both teams had their attacking moments with for Winchester Ollie Griggs and Oli Bailey having shots blocked and at the other end Matt Bainbridge forced a good save from Ryan Pryce and Callum Laycock also coming close. Towards the end of the first half AFC Stoneham were enjoying a good spell of pressure and Winchester were relieved to score a second goal towards the end of the game's first period.

At the start of the second half Callum Laycock again came close for the home side, while Olli Bailey whose pace up front was always a threat to AFC Stoneham was denied by a good block by Ben Clarke. Keith Emmerson keen to earn a tie against the club he served as player coach last season also got in some important clearances to keep the home team out.

AFC Stoneham pulled a goal back midway through the second half when Matt Palmer headed home a corner, although Ryan Pryce had earlier saved efforts that were easier to keep out than this one. This goal though fuelled thoughts of yet another AFC Stoneham fight back against Winchester.

Simba Mlambo and Kieran Douglas forced saves from the home goalkeeper, but AFC Stoneham also came close on a couple of occasions, Winchester though made the game safe when Jamie Barron set up Ollie Griggs to score in the game's closing minutes.

In the second half Kieran Douglas, Joe Hayward and I K Hill came on as second half substitutes for Winchester. The match attracted a good crowd considering Eastleigh were at home on the same evening. BESPOKE LUXURY LIVING

Winchester City had a well-deserved FA Cup in the 2018-19 season. It all started for City at home to Bournemouth Poppies, when a late Tyrell Mitford penalty earnt City a trip to Frome Town.

City took the lead in Wiltshire, but the hosts from the league above levelled in the second half, to take the game to a replay. A Connor Cocklin header in the second half of extra-time took City through, but there was further drama after a floodlight fire caused a lengthy delay in the latter stages of extra-time. Fortunately, the referee allowed play to finally resume, and City sealed an away trip to Merthyr Town.

Tyrell Mitford was the star of the show as he netted a hat-trick at Southern Premier League side, Merthyr Town. City came away 4-1 winners, producing an upset, and they were awarded with a home tie against Cirencester Town.

There was a power cut and heavy rain in the build-up to the Cirencester cup tie. A healthy crowd watched on as City beat their Southern League Division One South counterparts. The resulting draw handed City a cup tie away at Torquay United.

The players began the day with a private breakfast at The Winchester Hotel & Spa, before boarding the coach down to . City, who were watched by several hundred travelling fans in a crowd of over 2,200, started brightly and Torquay didn’t take the lead until a third of the way through the game, via a heavily deflected effort. The Gulls then netted twice more before half-time to effectively kill the tie. Torquay scored again not long after the restart, but City got their chance to shine, when Joe Hayward scored a penalty in front the ecstatic visiting fans.

It was a day that will go down in the clubs’ history, an occasion was the joint-fur- thest the club had ever got in the FA Cup. WINCHESTER CITY Football Club PLAYER PROFILES
