Professional beach volleyball players and Olympic gold medallists Kerri Pottharst and Natalie Cook joined NSW Premier Mike Baird at Manly Beach today to launch this year’s Volleyfest competition. “The gold medal performance by Kerri and Natalie at the Sydney Olympics was one of the most memorable sporting achievements of the Games, and this competition will provide a boost for the sport just in time for the Rio Olympics,” Mr Baird said. “Volleyfest will attract some of the world’s best players to Australia’s best beach across nine days of top quality international competition. “This competition will provide a boost for the local area and will showcase Australia’s beach culture to the world when it’s held just after the Australian Open of Surfing.” The NSW Government will support the event over the next three years through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. Over the next three years, the competition is expected to attract more than 8,000 domestic and international visitors who are expected to spend an estimated $6.2 million. Now in its second year, Volleyfest will include the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour Finals on the 19-20 March, the 4 Nations Cup on the 21-22 March, and the AVC Asian Championships played from 23-28 March. .

  • Kerri Pottharst
Kerri Pottharst Beach Volleyball Olympic Gold Medalist & Keynote Speaker Kerri Pottharst is renowned as one of the world’s most fierce Volleyball competitors and Australia’s most decorated Indoor and Beach Volleyball player. She represented her country for an incredible 20 years. Kerri is also a highly influential motivational keynote speaker. Drawing on her experience as an elite athlete, she works closely with her audiences to deliver inspirational messages of teamwork, skill, trust, relationship building, leadership and communication, and importantly, tangible results. Kerri’s presentations are peppered with unforgettable tales from beach volleyball that combine motivational messages with fun. They can even include a fun session of beach volleyball with the Olympic hero. More about Kerri Pottharst: When Kerri Pottharst took up volleyball at the age of 15, she hadn’t yet dreamed of becoming an Olympic champion. “I was simply given an opportunity, set myself goals, worked hard and most importantly, I loved every minute of it!” In 1992, a sickening knee injury should have ended Kerri Pottharst’s career, but in her typical no- nonsense style, Kerri recovered late in 1993. She changed her life goals and went on to win two Olympic medals in Beach Volleyball. One of those was Bronze at the Atlanta Olympics and then the Gold against Brazil during the Sydney 2000 Games. Kerri and her playing partner, Natalie Cook, brought new ideas and moves to the sport of Beach Volleyball, which are now being imitated by teams from all over the world. As testament to Kerri’s abilities, since 1994 she has never been out of the top 10 and rarely out of the top six in International Beach Volleyball events.

Emanuel/Ricardo & May-Treanor/Walsh Jennings top Fantasy Tournament podiums Longmont, Colo., USA, May 20, 2020 - While the world's "elite" beach volleyball players were scheduled to be competing at events in China, Brazil, Latvia and the Czech Republic the past month, an on-line tournament featuring past Olympic participants was held to determine "fantasy" gold medal winners for men and women. To the surprise of no one, three-time Olympic and world champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh of the United States finished first in the women's competition while the men's medal matches were tightly contest by American, Brazilian and German pairs in the voting of more than 160 media, coaches and beach volleyball experts around the world. With total 91 votes received, the top-seeded May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings were listed as the winning team on 81 ballots with a predicted score of 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) by defeating third-seeded Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst of Germany in the gold medal match. Only 31 of the ballots felt that the match would be a three-setter. For the record, the two teams never met on the FIVB World Tour. May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings claimed Olympic gold medals in 2004, 2008 and 2012 with world championship titles in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Ludwig and Walkenhorst captured the Rio 2016 Olympic gold medal before topping the world championship podium in 2017 at Vienna.
