The Netherlands will stage the seventh edition of the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships for players under the age of 19 in The Hague July 30- August 3. · After an in-depth verification of the bidding documentation from Norway and Russia (Moscow), Stavanger has been selected to stage the 2009 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships. · Two women’s and four men’s FIVB Challenger/Satellite events have been scheduled for 2008 in the Czech Republic (men’s Challenger, Brno, June 26-29), Egypt (women’s Challenger, Hacienda Bay Beach, July 23- 25), Estonia (men’s Challenger, Pärnu, July 17-20), Liechtenstein (women’s and men’s Satellite, Vaduz, August 6-10) and Switzerland (men’s Satellite, July 10-13). · Underlining the continued success of Beach Volleyball as Olympic disciplines is the announcement of a sell out at the 12,000-seat Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground where the competition begins August 9 and ends August 22. The Beijing Organizing Committee (BOCOG) confirmed that internet sales for tickets have closed more than three months ahead of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. BOCOG is keeping back a small percentage of tickets to sell on a daily basis at the Beach Volleyball venue during the men’s and women’s tournaments. Beach Volleyball made its Olympic debut at the Atlanta 1996 Summer Games has seen fans packing out tournaments ever since. The rush for tickets mirrors the television success enjoyed by Volleyball during the Olympic Games. The sport was recognized after Athens 2004 as one of the most popular Olympic sports on television, with 3.5 billion viewer hours according to official figures reported by the International Olympic Committee. There will be 24 men’s and 24 women’s pairs competing in the Olympic Beach Volleyball Tournaments.

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

· The 12,200-seat Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground will be the site for the 2008 competition. The volleyball ground contains 17,000 tons of fine sand imported from Hainan. Construction for the facility was started December 28, 2005 and was completed for an “Olympic” test event for women in August 2007. Practicing the concept of "Green Olympics," the beach volleyball event organizers had the previously existing workshops and industrial storerooms on the grounds converted into office space rather than having new offices built. A "sun-chasing" solar power generation system installed at the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground will be the first such power generation system used at an Olympic venue. The sun-chasing mechanism controls a rotating battery that switches according to where the sun shines, thereby maximizing the amount of solar power collected. The completely automatic 11-kW sun-chasing solar power generation system measures 11 m high x 7 m wide, and the battery is capable of rotating 270 degrees. The system can generate 30% more power than the average solar power generation system. With a lifespan of more than 25 years, the system can generate 72,000 kWh per year, with an average of 200 kWh per day. Moreover, it is environmental-friendly. As a solar energy power generation system, it produces 23.4 tons less carbon dioxide and 1.5 tons less sulfur dioxide emissions than regular generators. · A $50,000 FIVB Challenger stop at the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground was held in 2007 (August 13-19) to serve as a “test” event for next August’s Summer Games in the Chinese capital. · Twenty-four women's teams competed in the fifth of six Challenge/Satellite events on the 2007 FIVB calendar following the same Olympic format for the Olympic Beach Volleyball competition to be held August 9-22, 2008. The "Good Luck Beijing" 2007 FIVB Beach Volleyball Women's Challenger “tested” all aspects of the competition, including the 24-team format, results, venue, cheerleaders’ program and the 17,000 tons of fine sand imported from Hainan for the main and two side courts. · Vivian Cunha and Angela Vieira of Brazil split the $9,000 first-place prize by defeating China’s Yuan Yue and Wenwen Zhang 21-15 and 23-21 in the 45-minute gold medal match to win the Good Luck Beijing" 2007 FIVB Beach Volleyball Women's Challenger. Thailand’s Kamoltip Kulna and Yupa Phokongploy posted a 21-14, 18-21 and 15-12 win in the 50-minute bronze medal match over Sarah Schmocker and Isabelle Forrer of Switzerland.

NOTE: The 2008 SWATCH FIVB World Tour champions will be determined by calculating the points for a team’s best 13 women and 14 men finishes based on 75 percent of the 18 women’s and 19 men’s events (Open and Grand Slam events only) staged this season and rounded down. Although part of the 2008 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar, the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games does not reward world ranking points for the competition.
