Agradezco por haber conocido gente increíble a lo largo de esta caminata hacia la obtención del título de Doctor, pero no solo las grandes ayudas importan. Observations of an individual larva of Reverdin’s blue named O-1, and its tending ants were made in the grassland at the foot of Mt. Fuji, Japan between 29 VIII to 1 X in 2003. During its 3rd to 4th instars, O-1 larva was almost entirely protected from natural enemies by Camponotus japonicus Primary Tending Ants (PTAs) and Secondary Tending Ants (STAs). Prior to pupation, O-1 entered a C. japonicus nest hole with a PTA and three unmarked ants. Many C. japonicus individuals, including the same PTAs and some STAs from the larval stage, as well as newly attending STAs, alternatively accompanied the pupa until emergence. This is a new form of symbiotic relationship between Reverdin’s blue and C. japonicus. In the relationship characterized by what we term “loyalty,” a specific individual of Reverdin’s blue was tended by one or several PTAs, and some STAs, from the 2nd instar to adulthood. The most recent survey is by Hintan (1951). Since the majority af published reports are purely descriptivc it would seem both desirable and necessary to' consider the evolutionary saurces of the association using an experimental approach. It is the purpase of this paper ta present a summary af the essential facts and new thoughts bearing on this associatian based on this approach; de­ tails af these investigations will be published elsewhere. Current Hypatheses The best known hypathesis advanced to explain the relatianship be­ tween ants and the larvae originated with Thomann (1901). He suggested that ants are able to drive away the caterpillar's parasites, so that the lycaenids benefit fram the presence af the ant. In order to attract the ants and keep them in attendance, the caterpillars exude a haney-like liquid fram a particular glandular argan, which was first described by Newcamer ( 1912). According to this hypathesis the assaciatian is a symbiasis. This hypathesis, hawever, has several weak paints. Firstly, it has not been canfirmed that ants are able ta drive away parasitic Ichneumonidae and Tachinidae or even natice their presence. Secandly, there is na evidence that the presence af the ant lawers significantly the rate of parasitism af the caterpillars. Field abscrvatians by this writer shaw that the degree af parasitism af lycaenid larvae fluctuates widely, as is usual in Lepidaptera, whether ants are present ar absent.

(Email: [email protected]) Abstract The present study focused on the associations of two sympatric lycaenid species, Chilades pandava Horsfield, 1829 and Euchrysops cnejus Fabricius, 1798 with their respective host plants and the lycaenid tending Camponotus compressus Fabricius, 1787 ants by conduction of field studies and by examination of the ultrastructure of the larval myrmecophilous organs. The study revealed two facultative association complexes: ants - the defoliating Cl. pandava larvae - Cycas revoluta (Thunb.) plants and ants - the pod-boring E. cnejus larvae - cowpea plant, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. The association of Cl. pandava was strongly synchronized with its host plant phenology and relatively less strongly with its late-arriving ant partner since the young, curled up leaves provided resources only to the caterpillars. The provision of resources to both the ants and the lycaenids by the cowpea plants contributed to the synchronization of E. cnejus association with the early arriving ants as well as the host plant. Presence of a single type of setae in Cl. pandava and of two types of setae in E. cnejus larvae indicates their facultative adaptations for resisting attack by their host ants. Ultrastructural similarity in the dorsal nectary, pore cupola and tentacle organs suggest that the basic myrmecophilous organs are conserved in these two lycaenid species.

Besides functioning as a physical barrier to cope with abiotic and biotic stress, this interface, called cuticle, is also a source of chemical signaling. Crucial compounds with this respect are surface lipids and especially cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs). This review is focused on the role of CHCs in fostering multilevel relationships among ants, plants and Lepidoptera (primarily butterflies). Indeed, particular traits of ants as eusocial organisms allowed the evolution and the maintenance of a variety of associations with both plants and animals. Basic concepts of myrmecophilous interactions and chemical deception strategies together with chemical composition, biosynthetic pathways and functions of CHCs as molecular cues of multitrophic systems are provided. Finally, the need to adopt a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach in the survey of complex models is discussed. In the 20th century, South Korea experienced a 1.5 ◦C temperature increase due to rapid industrialization and urbanization. If the changes continue, it is predicted that approximately 15–37% of animal and plant species will be endangered after 2050. Because butterflies act as a good indicator for changes in the temperature, the distribution of butterflies can be used to determine their adaptability to climate patterns. Local meteorological data for the period 1938–2011 were used from the National Forest Research Institute of Korea. Local temperature data were additionally considered among the basic information, and the distribution patterns of butterflies were analyzed for both the southern and northern regions. Southern butterflies (with northern limit) tend to increase in number with significant correlation between the temperature and number of habitats (p < 0.000), while northern butterflies (with southern limit) show no statistical significance between the temperature and number of habitats, indicating their sensitivity to temperature change. This finding is in accordance with the conclusion that southern butterflies are more susceptible to climate change when adapting to local environments and expanding their original temperature range for survival, which leads to an increase in the numbers of their habitats.

In butterflies, Bordas (1920), Dauberschmidt (1933), Dobkiewicz (1933) and others studied on the comparative morphology of the organ, and above all the work by Dauberschmidt has been valuable to his followers. The comparative morphology of the internal structures of butterflies may possibly give some suggestions on the taxonomy of this group, based mainly on the external characters; wing veins, colour patterns, palpi, antennae, legs and genitalia. From this viewpoint the present writer undertook the comparative study of the alimentary canal of butterflies, taking their taxonomic relationships into his consideration. In the present study the writer took up the following characters; mesenteron, anterior intestine, rectum and Malpighian tubules, and among them a special attention has been paid to the characters of the mesenteron, which were observed by him to be valuable among different groups.
