Biodiversity of the Water Reservoirs in the Vicinity of Usje Marl Quarry S.Petkovski, (1); I.Mastoris, (2); N.B.Kormusoska, (3); (1) NGO BIOECO Skopje, Republic of Macedonia (2) TITAN Cement Company S.A., Athens, Greece (3) Cementarnica “Usje” A.D., Skopje, Republic of Macedonia [email protected] Abstract In line with the activities of WBCSD/CSI task force on biodiversity, Titan uses specific tools for screening Group quarries versus areas of high biodiversity value, like the EMERALD network of Macedonia. The water reservoirs (artificial lakes) inside the Usje Marl Quarry, in proximity with the Titan Cement Plant Usje (Skopje, Macedonia), were gradually ‘formed’ in the 1980’s, after excavating closed pits inside the mine plan area. Freshwater supply to these confined water bodies is due to precipitation and surface rainwater inflows. Plant and animal species have inhabited the area, including the lakes, by natural processes, except the fish stocking that was made by the sport fishermen employed with Usje. Currently, the area more or less resembles a natural wetland ecosystems. By initiative of Usje, and in line with Titan’s Corporate Social Responsibility Policy, an Investigation Study on Hydrology, Hydrogeology & Biodiversity was conducted. This paper is going to present findings and recommendations of the investigation related to biodiversity. Besides the check lists of recorded species, for certain taxonomic groups a “potential list of species” was prepared, as a tool for evaluation of the quality of habitats. Despite the inevitable environmental degradation, the degree to which the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and associated species have survived, even in a modified and reduced state, is surprising. -

The Aphnaeinae (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) are a largely African subfamily of 278 described species that exhibit extraordinary life-history variation. The larvae of these butterflies typically form mutualistic associations with ants, and feed on awide variety of plants, including 23 families in 19 orders. However, at least one species in each of 9 of the 17 genera is aphytophagous, parasitically feeding on the eggs, brood or regurgitations of ants. This diversity in diet and type of symbiotic association makes the phylogenetic relations of the Aphnaeinae of particular interest. A phylogenetic hypothesis for the Aphnaeinae was inferred from 4.4 kb covering the mitochondrial marker COI and five nuclear markers (wg, H3, CAD, GAPDH and EF1) for each of 79 ingroup taxa representing 15 of the 17 currently recognized genera, as well as three outgroup taxa. Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analyses all support Heath’s systematic revision of the clade based on morphological characters. -

This study is also the first to provide estimates of demogra- phic parameters, detectability and vagility of the Iolas blue. Weekly count surveys performed on 38 host plant plantation patches resulted in an occupancy rate of 50 % with mostly very low relative abundance indices. Habitat analysis demonstrated that abundance was best explained by the combination of para- meters among which host plant vitality, patch connectivity, solar irradiations and the number of host plant seedlings were prominent. Capture-mark-recapture experiments undertaken in four populations revealed large differences in absolute abundance, an average adult life expectancy of 3.6 days and a very high catchability (82 %) and individual detectability (86 %). Furthermore, a dispersal analysis demons- trated that 78 % of dispersal events were less than 550 m (maximum of 1490 m), with significantly more dispersal in females (both in dispersal rates and dispersal distances). -

2015 FACULTY OF SCIENCE ANNUAL REPORT 2015 FACULTY OF SCIENCE ANNUAL REPORT From the Dean The Faculty of Science seeks to establish itself as a respected thought leader and knowledge partner in Africa and the international academic arena. During 2015, it made great strides in its pursuit of this vision and Stellenbosch University’s strategic priorities, with its staff and students excelling in numerous ways. Research excellence The year under review saw two new research chairs being added to the Faculty’s existing nine chairs. They are the SARChI chair in Integrated Skeletal Muscle Physiology, Biology and Biotechnology, while collaborative efforts with the CSIR resulted in the implementation of a joint research chair in Quantum, Optical and Atomic Physics. Several researchers managed to secure competitive grants from South Africa’s National Research Foundation, the Volkswagen Foundation and the European Union. The Faculty realises that excellence also requires collaboration in order to enhance its international visibility and publication quality and deepen research in areas where it lacks skills or infrastructure. In the reporting year, the Faculty collaborated with more than 700 institutions worldwide. Two of these collaborations, with bioinformaticians from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium and the University of London, resulted in two workshops for staff and students on next generation sequence analyses and statistics and methods in bioinformatics. During 2015 a record number of 50 PhD and 150 Honours students graduated – the highest number of postgraduate students since 2011. Several of our researchers received recognition for research excellence, with awards being made to Prof. Bert Klumperman (2015 SASOL Chemistry Innovator of the Year medal), Prof. -

Chequered blue butterfly, Scolitantides orion (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) has severely declined in many parts of Europe and is currently red-listed in many countries. We studied the population structure and turnover of the species in a lake-island system in a National Park in eastern Finland over a three-year period. The incidence of the chequered blue on the suitable islands (n = 41) and habitat patches (n = 123) was high: an average of 82% of the islands and patches were occupied over the three year period. At the island scale, the annual population turnover rate was 17%, with an extinction and colonization rate of 7% and 10%, respectively. At the patch scale, the annual population turnover was 16%, with 7% extinction and 9% colonization rate. Islands that were occupied over the three year period had a larger area of suitable habitat than islands in which turnover events were observed. -

We document the presence of extremely local populations of three butterfy species (Iolana iolas, Satyrus ferula and Melanargia larissa) in the Romanian fauna. Satyrus ferula and M. larissa are reported for the frst time in the country, while I. iolas is rediscovered following presumed extinction. Based on mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1—COI sequences), we assessed the genetic structure of these populations and placed them into a broader context through comparisons with other populations from across the range of these species. Each of the three species had a single haplotype in Romania, suggesting low female efective population size possibly under genetic erosion. Two of the populations (S. ferula and M. larissa) are genetically unique, displaying endemic haplotypes in south-western Romania. The Romanian populations of the three species likely remained unnoticed due to their extremely limited extent of occurrence. Their restricted range, close to the northern limits of distribution in the Balkans, their apparent low female efective population size, the presence of endemic haplotypes, and habitat vulnerability (especially for I.
