Atlas Update for the South East Queensland Natural Resource Management Plan 2009– 2031 The South East Queensland Natural Resource Management Plan 2009 – 2031 (the NRM Plan) lists measurable targets for the extent and condition of our natural assets and is aligned to state and regional interests for the community and industry in the South East Queensland Regional Plan 2009–2031. The NRM Plan has been prepared to coordinate the efforts of people working in environment and natural resource management and to guide sustainable development. To assist with this, all maps are aligned to catchment boundaries as well as Local Government planning areas. Unless otherwise stated, statistics are based on the SEQ Planning Boundary, including eleven Local Government Areas and the Toowoomba Urban Footprint (see Map 1: SEQ Planning Region). The NRM Plan provides regional targets to address key pressures on the region, including: rapid urban population growth, climate change, and increasing demand for infrastructure, housing, essential services and consumables. It also aims to promote and manage the natural assets that the region supports and ensure the long term liveability of SEQ. Implementation of the NRM Plan will ensure that we continue to work towards achieving good quality water, air and soil, as well as healthy farmland, waterways, wetlands, rainforests, woodlands and coastal environments. Map 1: Planning Region and Catchment Boundary ii Jan 2015 Introduction The Atlas describes the data which supports the NRM Plan and is currently in two parts: Part One – The Benchmark Atlas (2010) The Benchmark Atlas contains regional benchmark maps which have been generated using the best available data to provide a spatial representation or picture of the region as it was at the time the data was collected.   • The Glass House Mountains
    The Glass House Mountains Jutting into the air like shards of glass, the Glass House Mountains form a distinctive backdrop to the Sunshine Coast. This stunningly volcanic landscape holds a special significance in Indigenous legend and culture, with each of the mountains representing a member of a family, and their spirits dominating the area. Although climbing many of the mountains is only for the experienced, there are a number of easy to moderate tracks in the area accessible to a wider range of walkers. The circuit around Mount Tibrogargan passes through shady forest, and offers the chance to learn about, and view, several of the other mountains. The short hike up Wild Horse Mountain is rewarded with expansive views.     When Kerry Smerdon first bought his 100-acre property in Queensland's Glass House Mountains in 1992, it was home to pineapples, avocados and a plethora of fruits used for nursery cuttings including jackfruit, blueberries and litchis. On the hills were a few macadamia trees but the amount was "bugger all". Much has changed since then. The native nut now occupies almost half the farm Smerdon's property with Mount Coonowrin (also known as Crookneck) in the background. near Mount Coonowrin with more plantings set to replace remaining avocado trees that survived the 2011-12 floods, complementing 15 acres of another high value crop, custard apples (cherimoyas). "Going back when we first planted them [macadamias] nine years ago there was an oversupply and there wasn't a really good marketing campaign put forward for the supply of the nuts," Smerdon says. "There's been a bit of a shortage in the last couple of years which has pushed the price up and there have been exports to China starting up, nut-in-shell, and that's helped out. "There's also been a better overall marketing campaign of marketing Australian nuts over South Africa's. Prices went from AUD$1.60 (US$1.39) a kilo (2.2lbs) up to AUD$3.40 (US$2.97) a kilo this year." Even though the property's first large-scale macadamia trees were planted almost a decade ago, they are still considered to be young with a wait of 3.5-6 years from the grafting of seedlings to the first harvest, depending on the variety.
