2018 CONTACT Patrick Mcneil (415) VINEYARDS McEvoy Ranch: Located 30 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the rolling hills of Marin County, McEvoy Ranch is a 550-acre certified organic ranch that remains committed to sustainable farming practices since it was originally founded in 1990. The ranch is fully certified by the CCOF, and it is the standard for sustainable, full-circle eco-farming in Marin County. The western edge of the Petaluma Gap AVA provides for even ripening, concentration, and incredible balance- McEvoy Ranch is no exception. The site is incredibly diverse; Syrah, Alicante, Grenache, Pinot Noir and Montepulciano all thrive here, and several varietals are interplanted between the rows of the vast olive tree orchards. Pacheco Ranch: The Pacheco Ranch Vineyard is located 20 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Novato, California. This vineyard is unique for several reasons: Herb Rowland is the 7th generation shepherd of this site, and it stands today as the oldest continuously-farmed-by-one-family spot of dirt in the State of California. The terraced hillside Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards range in age from 25 to 50 years old. And while most Marin County vineyards benefit from the cooling influence of the Pacific, Pacheco Ranch is the most easterly vineyard site in the county and it shares the same exact climate as the iconic Rutherford AVA in the Napa Valley. Lewis Ranches: Jim Lewis is directly responsible for 20 acres of impeccably farmed Primitivo in Victor, California. This is located in the historic growing region of the Mokelumne River AVA in Lodi, where deeply-rooted, sandy riverbed soils have fertilized this grape growing hot spot since well before the California Gold Rush. The evenly-manicured canopy provides plenty of cover for the small and densely-clustered berries to ripen evenly throughout the relatively long growing season- while most old vine zinfandel sites in this area harvest in late August to mid-September, Jim Lewis attains perfect ripeness by mid-October every year. FERMENTATION Whole cluster pressed and cold settled in stainless steel. Stainless steel fermentation, followed by 9 months in neutral French oak barrels. 1/3 malolactic fermentation.     Lodi. Not just Zinfandel When many people think about Lodi, the rst thing that comes to mind is Zinfandel and quite oen, other lower price bulk produced wines. But nothing could be further from the truth and today Lodi is considered by many as one of California's most innovative grow- ing areas. Even though wine grapes have ourished in Lodi since the later part of the 19th Century, it is oen thought of as a "new up-and-coming discovery" in California wines. Old Vine Zinfandel (and they are really old with some vines dating to the 1880s) represents the largest portion of vineyard land in the AVA. But more than 100 varietals are planted in Lodi's 100,000+ vineyard acres - most with Old World ancestry from France, Spain, Italy, Portugal etc. ere are countless soil types and microclimates throughout the area that encourage extensive exploration and experimentation on the part of progressive and courageous growers.     Complimentary Copy The International Wine Review California Zinfandel: A New Look Foreword by Joel Peterson Special Double Issue May/June 2017 1 Foreward Zinfandel has a long history in California. Much of that history is about adaptation to changing circumstance. The last 40 years have brought more change to the style and quality of the wines made from Zinfandel than ever before. Hence, while much has been written about this grape and its wine over the years, it is a bit surprising that a comprehensive up-to-date synopsis of its history in California, the growing regions that it inhabits, the winemakers who have wholeheartedly embraced it, or the excellent wines that are crafted from Zinfandel has not emerged. Fortunately that has changed with this report. As the modern California wine business has emerged from the late 1960’s the skill of its winemakers, the understanding of viticulture, wine making technology and consumer enthusiasm have all reach levels never before achieved. This has benefited Zinfandel greatly. Its ancient DNA has found a comfortable fit in the evolving California wine scene. The wines are better, at all levels, than they have ever been. The current review of California Zinfandel from the good people at the International Wine Review could not come at a more opportune time. They have written a thorough review of the current state of Zinfandel in California, its history, growing regions, winemakers, wineries and of course, its wine. While I cannot endorse the scores given the wines, as they are entirely the opinion of the International Wine Review.

We have allowed it the grace to bottle age for 7 months before release. The nose is elegant and sophisticated with aromas of red currant, plum, raspberry jam and chocolate covered candied oranges with a hint of allspice. It has balanced tannins with a bright fresh acidity. Rich velvety flavors of strawberry jam, boysenberry and chocolate covered cherry bon bons combine with an earthiness reminiscent of a forest floor. Hints of white pepper linger on the long balanced finish. This wine is magical and is a true expression of its terroir. Liz recommends pairing this with seared duck breast with a cherry and zinfandel reduction sauce.
