If you drink no Noir, you Pinot Noir Volume 9, Issue 39 March 31, 2014 Adventures on the Pinot Trail: World of Pinot Noir - The Seminars On February 27, 2014, I hit the Pinot Trail to attend four major events in California. Like the song, “Sugartime,” from the 1950s sung by the McGuire Sisters, it was “Sugar (Pinot) in the morning, Sugar (Pinot) in the evening, Sugar (Pinot) at suppertime. Be my little sugar, And love me (Pinot) all the time.” The trail first led me to Santa Barbara for the 14th Annual World of Pinot Noir, then to San Francisco for three more memorable events: a special retrospective tasting of the wines of Ted Lemon titled “30 Years of Winemaking, 20 years of Littorai,” at Jardiniere restaurant on March 2, Affairs of the Vine Pinot Noir Summit at The Golden Gate Club on March 9, and the In Pursuit of Balance seminars and tasting at Bluxome Street Winery on March 10. I will give a full report on each stop along the Pinot Trail in this issue and those to follow, highlighting some of the special wines I tasted. Some have accused me of being a Pinot pimp and rightfully so. One of my readers told me when I asked him what he had been drinking, “As far as what I am drinking, it’s Pinot you bastard, and it’s your damn fault. Now I empty my bank account at wineries nobody has ever heard of, on wines nobody has ever drank except you, you pr**k. You have ruined me....and I love it.” The World of Pinot Noir successfully relocated this year from its long-standing home in Shell Beach to the Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara. -

Lodi. Not just Zinfandel When many people think about Lodi, the rst thing that comes to mind is Zinfandel and quite oen, other lower price bulk produced wines. But nothing could be further from the truth and today Lodi is considered by many as one of California's most innovative grow- ing areas. Even though wine grapes have ourished in Lodi since the later part of the 19th Century, it is oen thought of as a "new up-and-coming discovery" in California wines. Old Vine Zinfandel (and they are really old with some vines dating to the 1880s) represents the largest portion of vineyard land in the AVA. But more than 100 varietals are planted in Lodi's 100,000+ vineyard acres - most with Old World ancestry from France, Spain, Italy, Portugal etc. ere are countless soil types and microclimates throughout the area that encourage extensive exploration and experimentation on the part of progressive and courageous growers. Lodi was also the rst California AVA to establish very strict 3rd-party certied rules (the Lodi Rules Sustainable Winegrowing Program) governing sustainable growing methods as well as the industry's impact on the environment and the local economy. Lodi is more than just Zinfandel and hopefully, today's column will introduce you to some if its hidden splendor. Wilkes 2017 “Kent’s Red” is a blend of 90% Barbera and 10% Lagrein from the renowned Paso Robles Highlands District on California’s Central Coast. This District, which is the most southeast sub appellation within the Paso Robles AVA, is an absolutely fantastic place to grow wine grapes, partly due to its average 55 degree temperature swing from day to night (the highest diurnal temperature swing in the United States!), and also in part to its combination of sandy and clay soils that promote very vigorous vines. The high temperature swing, by the way, crafting bold, complex red blends like the J. Fit for Kings BAROLO, THE LEGENDARY ITALIAN GRAPE OF YORE, IS RIPE FOR ASIAN ROYALTY, WRITES JAMES SUCKLING taly’s great grape, barolo, has long been called the “king of wines and the wine of kings.” But the structured red still remains relatively undiscovered in most of Asia. “It’s still hard to convince most fine-wine lovers in Asia about Barolo, even though our region is very much like Burgundy with its mostly small vineyard holdings and Ifamily-owned wineries,” says Pio Boffa, the owner of Pio Cesare, one of the top names in Barolo. Boffa adds that most of the top wines are made in limited quantities – as little as a few hundred cases. Indeed, Barolo tastes like red Burgundy of Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, in many ways.
