Page 4 The Torch COLLEGE & CAREER CORNER WELCOME TO A NEW YEAR The school counseling team is excited for 2013-14 school year! We have survived our first year at Sprague together as a team, and are anxious to get going on growing and improving our program. We will be submitting articles at each publication with important information for parents. Our website will be up and running very soon. Please be watching for it as we will post items that will be important to you. If you need to get a hold of your child’s school counselor, please feel free to email or call. We divide the student population between us by last name as follows: Heather Hagner Christina Lilly Jasmine Langeliers All students with last names that All students with last names that All students with last names that start with A-GH start with GI-NI start with NI-Z [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] If you do not have email, you can also call us at 503-399-3261 to talk on the phone or make an appointment to meet in person. PSAT Day – October 16 Sprague will be having all sophomores take the PSAT for free this year as practice. Juniors can take it for $14 and their scores will be submitted to qualify for the national merit scholarship. Students who take the PSAT score 145 points higher on the SAT than those who don’t take the PSAT. It also connects students with colleges and give them access to College and Career planning tools. Don’t miss this opportunity! PARENT NIGHT – November 21 All parents are invited to come and get more information about having your student apply to college and the (sometimes overwhelming) financial aide process. Our speakers will be Vice President from Admissions at Willamette University and the Financial Aide Advisor from Corban College. We will hold parent night in Sprague’s Pantheon from 6:30-8:00 on Thursday, November 21. There will also be a question and answer period. This is a MUST for any parent who wants their child to go to college. Hope to see you there! BEYOND SPRAGUE Our College and Career Center has some wonderful parent volunteers who are very knowledgeable about planning for after high school. Every year the trained volunteers meet with all of Sprague’s Seniors in the classroom and present about the four options after high school: Go into the work force, go to a two year college, go to a four year college, or go into the military. They answer questions and meet in small groups so students can get more detailed information. Students can request to meet one on one with a volunteer to talk about their individual needs as well. Please encourage your junior or senior to take advantage of this great opportunity this year. If you are a parent, and want to volunteer, please contact Heather Hagner, School Counselor at 503-399-3261. The Torch Page 5

Students applied, went through an interview process, and then were accepted into the program, committing to 2 weeks in the summer and one meeting a month to help with their college search. Over the two weeks of the summer, they learned about the college application process, financial aid, SAT/ACT, how to be a successful college student, residence life and college visits. Dear Parents: We want to welcome you back to another exciting school year at Sprague High School! We believe that helping every student reach their potential is a mutual effort between the home, school and community. It is our hope that you will support us in the endeavor by being involved and informed about your child’s education. One of the advantages that a TAG student has when they reach high school is the large number of advanced/honor courses that they may take to enhance their learning. By the beginning of October, all teachers will have identified their TAG students, received TAG training, and understand the importance of TAG plans and modifications. All teachers will be writing Course Plans/TAG Considerations that describe the assessment tools used to determine the student’s rate and level of learning. Course Plans/TAG Considerations will also describe the assessment modifications that teachers intend to utilize in the course to accommodate the level and rate of learning for TAG students. A notebook containing a copy of each Course Plan will be available for viewing or copying by mid October. This year conferences will be November 25 and 26, 2013. Parents of a Talented and Gifted student may request additional time for the conferences with your child’s teachers. Just let your child’s teachers know you would like additional time when the conference notifications come out in November. This year there will be many opportunities for you and your child to become involved in school activities and enrichments. Sigrid Olsen, TAG coordinator

DID I HEAR THE PHONE RING? In an effort to stay better connected to our school community, all of our district’s schools utilize a Parent Notification system. The system may be used to call the homes of students to report absences, emergencies, closures, or to deliver messages about important events occurring in our school and district.
