French Literature
French Literature The AP French Literature course is designed to introduce students who have advanced language skills to the formal study of a representative body of literary texts in French. The Course Students in an AP French Literature course have the following objectives: A. to gain proficiency in the fundamental language skills that enable them to 1. read and understand prose and verse of moderate difficulty and mature content; 2. formulate and express critical opinions and judgments in correct oral and written French; B. to develop the ability to read and analyze critically and to discuss perceptively representative works of French literature. The program is not to be construed as a formal survey of literary history but rather as an introduction to representative works of prose, poetry, and drama from different periods. Students should, however, be aware of the cultural context of the works read. They should also acquire the basic concepts and terminology of textual analysis. By learning to identify and interpret the various elements that enter into the composition of a literary text and to perceive their relationships, students acquire a fuller understanding and appreciation of the art and significance of literature. For detailed information and practical suggestions on teaching an AP French Literature course, teachers should consult the AP French Literature Teacher’s Guide. The Poetry-Verse Distinction Reconsidered DAVID NOWELL SMITH _____________________ [Dublin: in the Stag’s Head, Dame Lane] O’Mahony – Haven’t you that little priest that writes poetry over there – Fr Russell? Joyce – O, yes. .I hear he has written verses. O’Mahony – (smiling adroitly). .Verses, yes. .that’s the proper name for them. .1 In this ‘epiphany’, the name the young James Joyce gave to short prose observations of ‘a sudden spiritual manifestation’ that surfaces in everyday life,2 the author and O’Mahony discuss a ‘little priest’, Fr Russell. Whilst Joyce initially corrects O’Mahony’s description of the priest’s verse writings, the epiphany subsequently shows them build up a shared connivance, embodied in O’Mahony’s ‘adroit’ smile. In one highhanded gesture, Joyce asserts his own superiority over ‘little’ Fr Russell, and the archetypal superiority of artist over priest. At the basis of this dismissal is the implication that the inferiority of ‘verses’ to ‘poetry’ is insurmountable. -

Les premiers ouvrages indiqués sont des manuels généraux sur l’histoire de la culture et de la littérature, et quelques ouvrages qui peuvent vous aider dans l’analyse des textes (partie II de ce document). La partie III contient, pour chaque période ou siècle que vous devez étudier, une liste d’oeuvres principalement littéraires qui sont représentatifs de la littérature et de la culture française et francophone de cette époque. Cette liste de lecture est aussi conçue pour vous aider à préparer l’examen oral que vous devez passer à la fin de vos études graduées. Vous devez passer en effet alors un examen oral, que vous choisissiez l’option I (examen écrit et oral) ou l’option II (thèse). Nous allons donc d’abord préciser le contenu de ces options puis le format de l’examen oral. Options possibles pour obtenir le diplôme de maîtrise à la fin des études dans le programme gradué : 1) Option I (examen) : Les étudiants qui choisissent l’option « Examen (oral et écrit)» ne passeront l’oral qu’après avoir réussi l’examen écrit (durée : 4 heures), où il leur sera demandé de : – Traiter deux questions d’essai au choix sur quatre proposées – Faire une explication de texte au choix sur deux proposées Ces questions comme les explications de texte seront basées, autant que possible, sur les cours suivis par les étudiants. -

Aloysius Bertrand, admirateur de Victor Hugo ? – Essai sur la relation entre Gaspard de la Nuit et le romantisme des années 1820 – Akane MIYAZAKI En novembre 1842, un petit recueil de poèmes en prose de Louis Bertrand, dit Aloysius Bertrand, paraît sous le titre Gaspard de la Nuit. Fantaisies à la manière de Rembrandt et de Callot(1). L’auteur était mort l’année précédente et ses manuscrits ont été réunis par David d’Angers, Victor Pavie et Sainte-Beuve. À cette première édition, Sainte-Beuve a consacré une « Notice » détaillée(2). En retraçant la vie « d’un orfèvre ou d’un bijoutier de Renaissance(3) », il fait l’éloge de ces « petites ballades en prose, dont le couplet ou le verset exact simulait assez bien la cadence d’un rythme(4). » Mais en même temps, il émet un avis singulier à propos de la mort du poète : « Si Bertrand fût mort en 1830, vers le temps où il complétait les essais qu’on publie aujourd’hui pour la première fois, son cercueil aurait trouvé le groupe des amis encore réunis, et sa mémoire n’aurait pas manqué de cortège(5). » Bertrand aurait-il dû mourir plus tôt ? Certes, son recueil pouvait sembler anachronique : il avait fallu plus de dix ans pour en achever le manuscrit entre 1826 et 1836, resté ensuite presque cinq ans chez l’imprimeur de 1836 à 1841. Même en 1842, la publication de ce recueil n’a pas connu un brillant succès. Pourtant, à partir des années 1860, Bertrand a commencé à être exhumé comme poète moderne : Stéphane Mallarmé a dit de lui qu’il était « un de nos frères » et qu’« un anachronisme a[vait] causé son oubli »(6). -

Peter Johnson: What do you think accounts for the recent prose-poem renaissance? So many current collections contain both verse and prose poetry. Even Robert Pinsky's The Want Bone has a long prose poem in it. Moreover, there are four recent anthologies, at least five critical studies, and a few journals dedicated to prose poetry, though you still don't see many prose poems in those Best of American Poetry series or in the Pushcart Prizes. -

O poema em prosa no Brasil: ângulos de experimentação Jefferson Agostini Mello RESUMO: Muitos dos poemas em prosa de Cruz e Sousa e de Raul Pompeia consti- tuem uma metáfora da própria escrita do poema em prosa e da sua característica de work in progress. Ainda, em sua ambivalência, alguns podem remeter igualmente ao aspecto provisório da sociedade brasileira, sempre em transformação e pronta para se reinventar, pois, em boa medida, dependente dos rumos do capital internacional. Mas, ao dialogarem com esse contexto histórico, também por conta de seus traços formais, alguns poemas em prosa desses autores também fazem, indiretamente, a crítica do que as elites desejavam permanente e acabado: a Europa nos trópicos. Este texto explora as potencialidades críticas do poema em prosa de Cruz e Sousa e Raul Pompeia a partir de aspectos como inacabamento, deformidade e monstruosidade. ABSTRACT: Many of Cruz e Sousa and Raul Pompeia’s prose poems may be read as a metaphor for the prose poem’s écriture and its work-in-progress style. Also, in their ambi- valence, they may represent the provisional status of the Brazilian society, ever-changing and ready to reinvent itself, in part because of its dependence of international capital. Nevertheless, as these prose poems implicitly mention the historical context, mostly due to its formal aspects, they criticize what the Brazilian elites of the late 19th century had always wished for, i.e., Europe in the tropics. This essay explores the critical potentiality of the prose poem in Cruz e Sousa and Raul Pompeia through stylistic aspects, such as incompleteness, deformity and monstrosity. -

P Post Doctoral Fellow, Department Of Arabic, University Of Calicut, Kerala, India 673635 I. Introduction Ali Ahmad Saeed (Adonis) is one of the pioneers of the modern Arabic poetry. He opened new horizons to the Arabic poetry. He is one of the prominent thinkers of the modernization in Arab culture. Since his strong and bold appearance towards the literary scene he worked diligently and actively with creative liberal ideas to change the old concepts of poetry. He fighted with the inherited meanings of Arab poetry to revive the literary and poetic heritage in a new mould. So Adonis is considered as a powerful and effective voice that pushed the Arab poetry in to a new phase, which was totally opened to the free horizons of creativity. II. Early life, education and career Ali Ahmad Saeed Isber (Adonis) is a Syrian poet, essayist and translator. He has written volumes of poetry in Arabic language and more than twenty books as well as he has translated several works from French to Arabic. Ali Ahmad Saeed Isbar was born in Al Qassabin village near Latakia, of Northern Syria in 1930 to a family of farmers. He was the eldest son among the six children. As the family could not afford the cost for giving formal education to their son, they didn’t send him to school and the boy didn’t get school education in his childhood. -
