Mongo Santamaría Mongo Santamaría or Ramón ” Mongo ” Santamaría Rodríguez (Havana , April 7, 19221 – Miami , February 1, 2003 ) was a percussionist , arranger and conductor Cuban , one of the leading figures of Latin jazz. Introduced from small in the world of African and Cuban rhythms , becomes famous in the 1940s , He was one of the leading specialists of the congas and bongos , in Cuba . In 1948 he moved to New York , accompanied by Armando Peraza . Work later with various orchestras , including Perez Prado, but an accident and a long stay in the hospital led him to the world of droga.2 Once recovered , working with Tito Puente, until 1958 , recording a dozen albums in this period. After leaving Bridge , works with Willie Bobo and Cal Tjader , in California, where he discovers and adopts the bossa nova, from the hand of Elis Regina. From 1961 , it begins to lead his own groups , incorporating musicians like Joao Donato and Chick Corea , getting even bestsellers like “Watermelon Man” , cover of Herbie Hancock ( disc incorporated into the Grammy Hall of Fame, 1998) . Then he played with Dizzy Gillespie and Jack McDuff , although no longer own again led bands .
