Mongo Santamaría Mongo Santamaría or Ramón ” Mongo ” Santamaría Rodríguez (Havana , April 7, 19221 – Miami , February 1, 2003 ) was a percussionist , arranger and conductor Cuban , one of the leading figures of Latin jazz. Introduced from small in the world of African and Cuban rhythms , becomes famous in the 1940s , He was one of the leading specialists of the congas and bongos , in Cuba . In 1948 he moved to New York , accompanied by Armando Peraza . Work later with various orchestras , including Perez Prado, but an accident and a long stay in the hospital led him to the world of droga.2 Once recovered , working with Tito Puente, until 1958 , recording a dozen albums in this period. After leaving Bridge , works with Willie Bobo and Cal Tjader , in California, where he discovers and adopts the bossa nova, from the hand of Elis Regina. From 1961 , it begins to lead his own groups , incorporating musicians like Joao Donato and Chick Corea , getting even bestsellers like “Watermelon Man” , cover of Herbie Hancock ( disc incorporated into the Grammy Hall of Fame, 1998) . Then he played with Dizzy Gillespie and Jack McDuff , although no longer own again led bands .     I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956). This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLII, Number 2 Sprimg 2013 “Live From The East”: Pharoah Sanders in Brooklyn By Jeffrey Taylor, Brooklyn College, CUNY Though for most jazz historians Brooklyn remains in the shadow of Manhattan, two previous articles in this journal have documented a robust tradition that can be traced back as far as performances by The Creole Band at Coney Island in 1915.1 Though often paralleling musical developments across the East River, Brooklyn jazz has also been shaped by the unique dynamic of the borough’s ethnic and racial makeup, as well as the very spe- cial qualities of its many, often insular, neighborhoods.2 The historically black neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant in central Brooklyn, or “Bed-Stuy” as it is more commonly referred to, has long been a center of jazz, with its “Golden Age” of the 1940s and 1950s seeing performances by first-tier jazz musicians, includ- ing Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and many oth- ers. Though the popular imagination may now see Bed-Stuy primar- ily as a backdrop for Spike Lee movies, it boasts a black presence that goes far back into the 19th century, with the establishment of communities of freedmen in places such as Weeksville—now part of neighboring Crown Heights. With the construction of the A train in the mid-1930s, which connected Bed-Stuy with Harlem, the neigh- borhood became a cultural mecca that rivaled Manhattan’s larger and more famous African American community.
