  • Geochemical Distribution of Arsenic, Antimony and Mercury in Surface Waters and Bed Sediments from Aq- Darreh River, Takab, Northwest Iran
E3 Journal of Environmental Research and Management Vol. 4(3). pp. 0197-0208, April, 2013 Available online http://www.e3journals.org ISSN 2141-7466 © E3 Journals 2012 Full Length Research Paper Geochemical distribution of arsenic, antimony and mercury in surface waters and bed sediments from Aq- Darreh river, Takab, northwest Iran Yousef Rahimsouri 1*, Abdolmajid Yaghubpur 2 , and Soroush Modabberi 3 1 Department of Geology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Urmia, Urmia 57153 - 165, Iran. 2 Department of Geology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Tarbiat Moalem, 49 Mofateh Street, Tehran 15614 , Iran. 3 School of Geology, University College of Sciences, Tehran University, Enqlab Street, Tehran, Iran. Accepted 25 February, 2013 Aq-Darreh mining district is located in the Aq-Darreh river watershed, NW, Iran. The water and river-bed sediments of this area are very polluted due to the severe weathering and erosion of waste piles of Aq-Darreh Bala abandoned Sb mine and Aq-Darreh Au deposit. The concentration of As and Sb in water of Aq-Darreh river ranges from 3.2 to159 µg/l and 1.32 to 54.00 µg/l respectively. Also the amount of As, Sb and Hg in the Aq- Darreh river-bed sediments ranges from 38.6 to 1087.4 mg/kg (As), 1.87 to 93 mg/kg (Sb) and 0.096 to 23.7 mg/kg (Hg). Detailed chemical analyses of water and bed sediments samples of Aq-Darreh river and its distributaries indicate that geochemical background of this area, and also mining activities are responsible for these high concentrations of toxic elements.

  • Environmental Pollutants Enrichment in Soil, Surface Sediments and Water Resources by Mining Activities, a Case Study; Zarshuran Mine, NW Iran
Environmental pollutants enrichment in Soil, surface sediments and water resources by Mining activities, a case study; Zarshuran mine, NW Iran Khalil Rezaei Department of geology, Faculty of Earth science, Kharazmi University, Tehran, Iran [email protected] Abstract Contamination of soil and water environment by heavy metals in a mining area and their effect on the soil and water characteristics were determined. Despite the ever-increasing development in mining activities in Iran, a little attention has been given to the environmental impacts in some cases. In this study, distribution of pollutants (As, Sb, Ag, and Zn) in natural resources such as surface soil, sediments and water, in addition to adjacent rock of river bed has been investigated. Correlations between these elements, sizes of sedimentary grains, and the reasons of solution and precipitation of minerals have also been studied and compared. Additionally the effects of some of the natural geochemical barriers on transferring elements have been introduced. Distribution of pollutant elements from distances far from sources of pollution can be traced in the regional plants. Finally, while presenting environmental and health problems, some practical solutions for the prevention of pollution distribution is cited. Keywords:Archive Zarshuran, Pollution Arsenic, ofsediment andSID geochemistry. www.SID.ir Introduction: Indiscrete disposal of industrial waste leads to several geo-environmental disasters on land and it has huge socio-economic effects on the population residing in the impacted area especially in terms of livelihood and health. Once this happens, it becomes a news item and comes into focus for geo- environmental evaluation. Mining and processing of heavy and rare earth minerals inevitably involves distress of the land environment, the magnitude and intensity of which depends on the type of chemicals and processes used, the efforts taken in the management of waste as well as on environmental fragility of location.

The research is qualitative, employing participatory observation and field-based interviews based on malinowski's functional theory. The findings of this study revealed that the villagers depend on their livestock and have acquired local knowledge in order to survive and adapt to the cold weather. The Livestock farmers tend to keep their livestock deep in the ground in part of their home which called the slum. The villagers have been able to interact and adapt to their environment using this local experience.
