In a desperate attempt to curb the young protesters’ activities, Lukashenko called for those publicly supporting the protests to be dismissed from their studies and jobs. The EU needs to act fast. Those who fight for democratic values cannot be punished by stripping them of their right to education, and drafting them for military service. Therefore, we welcome the EU4Belarus programme pledging to contribute EUR 24 million to reinforcing resilience and empowering civil society in Belarus, of which EUR 8 million will go to scholarships and stipends for study in the EU. Unfortunately, the basis for the distribution of these funds is still unknown, so the money is still waiting to be allocated.

To the President of the European Commission Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen, Rue de la Loi / Wetstraat 200 1049 Brussels To the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Mr. Vladis Dombrovskis Rue de la Loi / Wetstraat 200 1049 Brussels Brussels, 22 October 2020, Subject: the EU must impose an import ban on Chinese companies using forced labour Dear President von der Leyen, Dear Vice-President Dombrovskis, For years, the Chinese regime has been detaining millions of human beings in camps, just because they were born Uyghurs. For years, Europe and the world have been witnessing a crime against humanity without opposing any resistance to it. In recent months, several studies have reported the use of Uyghur forced labour for the benefit of major European companies. Indeed, many Chinese factories, directly supplying EU brands exploit the Uyghurs and benefit from their forced labour. Facing this abjection, Europe must act to protect the lives and fundamental rights of Uyghurs. The EU should use its trade and market power to safeguards the founding principles enrichened in our Treaties and guiding our external policies. As the US did lately through an imports ban passed almost unanimously in the US House of Representatives, Europe urgently needs to establish a blacklist of Chinese companies implicated in Uyghur forced labour. We look forward to your response. Yours sincerely, 1. Raphaël Glucksmann, S&D 2. Dietmar Köster, S&D 3. Francisco Guerreiro, Greens 4. Sylvie Guillaume, S&D 5. Aurore Lalucq, S&D 6. • HM Sheikh Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa Brussels, 23 July 2020 Office of HM the King P.O
HM Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa Brussels, 23 July 2020 Office of HM the King P.O. Box 555 Rifa's Palace Kingdom of Bahrain To His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, CC: EU Ambassador in Riyadh, the British, German, Italian and French Ambassadors in Manama, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, and EU Special Representative for Human Rights Eamon Gilmore. We, Members of the European Parliament, are writing today to express our deep concerns over the 12 individuals in the Kingdom of Bahrain at imminent risk of execution. We understand their executions await only your personal ratification and we respectfully ask you to seriously consider pardoning them or commuting their death sentences. As you are no doubt aware, on 13 July 2020 the Court of Cassation upheld the death sentence against Mohammed Ramadhan and Husain Moosa. The trial garnered significant attention from international observers, as well as the media, due to the circumstances surrounding the proceedings, including the courts’ alleged reliance on torture-tainted confession as primary evidence. UN experts already raised their concerns on this case in February, and in anticipation of the trial, on 10 July, the Chair of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights Maria Arena and Chair of the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with the Arab Peninsula Hannah Neumann issued a joint statement expressing “grave concern over the failures of the courts in Bahrain to exclude torture evidence”. On 14 July, this was echoed by the United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR).

  • Brussels, 29Th April 2021 Dear Executive Vice
Brussels, 29th April 2021 Dear Executive Vice-President Timmermans, Dear Commissioner Sinkevičius, We would like to bring your attention to the case of the Polish lignite mine in Turów, on the border with Czech Republic and Germany. Turów is an urgent matter that needs to be tackled as it is linked to our ability to achieve the goals of the European Green Deal and proper implementation of the EU climate law that has just been adopted. As you are well informed, the legal licence for the mine expired on 30th of April 2020, but the mining is still ongoing, because of a flawed procedure leading to prolongation of the mining concession for six additional years. As the EU Commission already confirmed in its reasoned opinion from December 2020, the Polish authorities have incorrectly applied the provisions of the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive (2011/92/EU) and access to information Directive (2003/4/EC), as regards information to the public and Member States involved in trans-boundary consultations, access to justice, as well as the principle of loyal cooperation enshrined in Article 4(3) of the Treaty on the European Union (TEU). The first anniversary of the beginning of the illegal mining in Turów is just few of days away. We believe that too much time has passed and that the EU Commission should finally take effective measures to stop the violation of EU law in this case. European institutions must play a stronger role when EU law is violated, particularly in sensitive trans-boundary cases.
