  • Political History of Nevada: Chapter 1
Political History of Nevada Chapter 1 Politics in Nevada, Circa 2016 37 CHAPTER 1: POLITICS IN NEVADA, CIRCA 2016 Nevada: A Brief Historiography By EMERSON MARCUS in Nevada Politics State Historian, Nevada National Guard Th e Political History of Nevada is the quintessential reference book of Nevada elections and past public servants of this State. Journalists, authors, politicians, and historians have used this offi cial reference for a variety of questions. In 1910, the Nevada Secretary of State’s Offi ce fi rst compiled the data. Th e Offi ce updated the data 30 years later in 1940 “to meet a very defi nite and increasing interest in the political history of Nevada,” and has periodically updated it since. Th is is the fi rst edition following the Silver State’s sesquicentennial, and the State’s yearlong celebration of 150 years of Statehood in 2014. But this brief article will look to examine something other than political data. It’s more about the body of historical work concerning the subject of Nevada’s political history—a brief historiography. A short list of its contributors includes Dan De Quille and Mark Twain; Sam Davis and James Scrugham; Jeanne Wier and Anne Martin; Richard Lillard and Gilman Ostrander; Mary Ellen Glass and Effi e Mona Mack; Russell Elliott and James Hulse; William Rowley and Michael Green. Th eir works standout as essential secondary sources of Nevada history. For instance, Twain’s Roughing It (1872), De Quille’s Big Bonanza (1876) and Eliot Lord’s Comstock Mining & Mines (1883) off er an in-depth and anecdote-rich— whether fact or fi ction—glance into early Nevada and its mining camp way of life.

“Between the Creeks” Gwen Pettit This is a compilation of weekly newspaper columns on local history written by Gwen Pettit during 1986-1992 for the Allen Leader and the Allen American in Allen, Texas. Most of these articles were initially written and published, then run again later with changes and additions made. I compiled these articles from the Allen American on microfilm at the Allen Public Library and from the Allen Leader newspapers provided by Mike Williams. Then, I typed them into the computer and indexed them in 2006-07. Lois Curtis and then Rick Mann, Managing Editor of the Allen American gave permission for them to be reprinted on April 30, 2007, [email protected]. Please, contact me to obtain a free copy on a CD. I have given a copy of this to the Allen Public Library, the Harrington Library in Plano, the McKinney Library, the Allen Independent School District and the Lovejoy School District. Tom Keener of the Allen Heritage Guild has better copies of all these photographs and is currently working on an Allen history book. Keener offices at the Allen Public Library. Gwen was a longtime Allen resident with an avid interest in this area’s history. Some of her sources were: Pioneering in North Texas by Capt. Roy and Helen Hall, The History of Collin County by Stambaugh & Stambaugh, The Brown Papers by George Pearis Brown, The Peters Colony of Texas by Seymour V. Conner, Collin County census & tax records and verbal history from local long-time residents of the county. She does not document all of her sources.

March 2019 Northeast Newsletter Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick 500 South Grand Central Parkway Box 551601 Las Vegas, NV. 89155-1601 702-455-3500 Dear Residents, Thank you so much for taking the time to be engaged in your community. We are looking forward to some projects breaking ground this spring or early summer. While I know it’s frustrating that government is slow, we run into challenges because we must abide by state law. Additionally, we have to compete with the private sector in getting both engineering and architectural companies to work on County projects. We love hearing from you, so feel free to reach out anytime. Marilyn 1 Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick, Vice President of Southwest Gas Operations John Hester and Mayor Al Litman Marilyn has been working on bringing natural gas to Mesquite since 2012 when she served as an Assemblywoman in the Nevada Legislature and has continued working towards this goal after becoming a Clark County Commissioner in 2016. Marilyn was able to see all the effort come to fruition on February 13, 2019 as Danielle’s Chocolates & Popcorn became the first business to use natural gas in Mesquite. Marilyn knew bringing natural gas to Mesquite would serve as a benefit to attract diverse businesses to the area and would give homeowners more options. 2 A hero can be defined in many Resident of the Month ways, this month we’re happy to recognize Luke Minogue for the bravery and selfless act of kindness he showed to a woman in distress. On June 8, 2018 Luke assisted in saving the life of a woman who was contemplating suicide while standing on a bridge over the I-15.

  • Designing Eden: the Future of Rule Based City-Making
CULTURAL PRODUCTION Designing Eden: The future of rule based city-making Maria Del C. Vera1, Shai Yeshayahu2 1University of Nevada Las Vegas, School of Architecture, Las Vegas, NV 2Ryerson University, School of Interior Design Toronto, ON ABSTRACT: The omnipresence of the algorithmic gaze is not just easing the capacity to crawl, index, and rank everything according to rule-based praxises but also shifting the dimensions of where, when, and how citizens move or circulate through the urban commons (O'Brien, 2018). In the absence of urban thinkers or participatory planning, these new alterations take place within the invisible peripheries of algorithms. This paper examines the change, and the spatial currencies reconditioned by the interplay of city-making and city-indexing as infrastructure, urban spaces, and built settings become indistinctively itemized. It recognizes that this is an ongoing process that continues to flatten, catalog, and index the physical characteristics of space which produces a virtual inventory of urban proportions subjecting city officials to accelerate the re-privatization, deregulation, and re-colonization of vast territories. It is within these transactions that we see a re-territorializing of the city's context and the uneven usage of spatial distribution underway. In the case of the American city, the range of impact caused by these emerging transactions is seemingly local, but we claim that the dynamics of city-indexing reverberate across different scales extending from local to regional, and national proportions. To depict our work, we choose a comparative method that aims to associate the impact of rule- base praxis with changes at the urban and regional scale.
