RECORDED RICHTER Compiled by Ateş TANIN Previous Update: February 7, 2017 This Update: February 12, 2017 New entries (or acquisitions) for this update are marked with [N] and corrections with [C]. The following is a list of recorded recitals and concerts by the late maestro that are in my collection and all others I am aware of. It is mostly indebted to Alex Malow who has been very helpful in sharing with me his extensive knowledge of recorded material and his website for video items at http://www.therichteracolyte.org/ contain more detailed information than this list.. I also hope for this list to get more accurate and complete as I hear from other collectors of one of the greatest pianists of our era. Since a discography by Paul Geffen http://www.trovar.com/str/ is already available on the net for multiple commercial issues of the same performances, I have only listed for all such cases one format of issue of the best versions of what I happened to have or would be happy to have. Thus the main aim of the list is towards items that have not been generally available along with their dates and locations. • The Piano Trio, the Duo Sonata, and the Sonatine As Seen by Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Ravel
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: REVISITING OLD FORMS: THE PIANO TRIO, THE DUO SONATA, AND THE SONATINE AS SEEN BY BRAHMS, TCHAIKOVSKY, AND RAVEL Hsiang-Ling Hsiao, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2017 Dissertation directed by: Professor Rita Sloan School of Music This performance dissertation explored three significant piano trios, two major instrumental sonatas and a solo piano sonatine over the course of three recitals. Each recital featured the work of either Brahms, Tchaikovsky or Ravel. Each of these three composers had a special reverence for older musical forms and genres. The piano trio originated from various forms of trio ensemble in the Baroque period, which consisted of a dominating keyboard part, an accompanying violin, and an optional cello. By the time Brahms and Tchaikovsky wrote their landmark trios, the form had taken on symphonic effects and proportions. The Ravel Trio, another high point of the genre, written in the early twentieth century, went even further exploring new ways of using all possibilities of each instrument and combining them. The duo repertoire has come equally far: duos featuring a string instrument with piano grew from a humble Baroque form into a multifaceted, flexible classical form. Starting with Bach and continuing with Mozart and Beethoven, the form traveled into the Romantic era and beyond, taking on many new guises and personalities. In Brahms’ two cello sonatas, even though the cello was treated as a soloist, the piano still maintained its traditional prominence. In Ravel’s jazz-influenced violin sonata, he treated the two instruments with equal importance, but worked with their different natures and created an innovative sound combination.

ABSTRACT This thesis is an investigation into the reception of Russian music in England for the period 1893-1929 and the influence it had on English composers. Part I deals with the critical reception of Russian music in England in the cultural and political context of the period from the year of Tchaikovsky’s last successful visit to London in 1893 to the last season of Diaghilev’s Ballet russes in 1929. The broad theme examines how Russian music presented a challenge to the accepted aesthetic norms of the day and how this, combined with the contextual perceptions of Russia and Russian people, problematized the reception of Russian music, the result of which still informs some of our attitudes towards Russian composers today. Part II examines the influence that Russian music had on British composers of the period, specifically Stanford, Bantock, Vaughan Williams, Holst, Frank Bridge, Bax, Bliss and Walton.

Program Notes Trio Con Brio Copenhagen April 1, 2015 Program Notes © Elizabeth Bergman Per Nørgård: Spell Per Nørgård (1932–) was born in Copenhagen and grew up listening to Classical music, but he was often dissatisfied with what he heard. “I would listen to Beethoven and Wagner, and so on,” he recalled, “but I always felt there was something lacking.” That something was “the Nordic mind,” the subject of a famous polemic he wrote in 1956. Nordic composers needed to be aware of international musical trends, he argued, but also should tap into their own unique, shared culture, history, and even climate. Nørgård’s own life and work reflect just this kind of productive relationship between the global and the local. He studied music history and composition at the Royal Danish Conservatory, then moved on to Paris where he worked with the esteemed pedagogue Nadia Boulanger. Like Philip Glass, another of Boulanger’s students, Nørgård pursued an interest in repeated patterns, numerical operations, organic structures, musical iterations, reiterations, and variations—all elements of the style known as Minimalism. Nørgård himself coins the untranslatable term lydtidsbillede, which means something like “image of sound in time,” to describe his pulsing rhythms. Spell arises from complex musical theories about how two notes can “unfold infinitely” to generate “a constantly expanding melody.” But the abstract compositional ideas are ultimately meant to reflect both the endless variety and essential unity of the human experience. Tonight marks the first performance of this work on our series. Mendelssohn: Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, Op. 66 Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) learned the fundamentals of music from his mother, who quickly recognized her son’s talents—and her daughter’s too.
