Tours Japan with Russell Watson, Live shows with Ivan Rebroff www.yulia.co.nz Russian Cinderella story Humble beginnings A self taught singer with a naturally prodigious 4.5 octave Coloratura Mezzo Soprano range, Yulia came from a poor background, learning to sing in her Grandmothers kitchen in Volgograd, Russia. Discovered On emigrating to New Zealand for a better life, Yulia was discovered as a young teenager on a local TV talent show by Gray Bartlett, the music manager who discovered Hayley Westenra. Yulia signed to Sony Music at the tender age of 18 and this was to offer Sony a strong Contralto / Mezzo Soprano alternative to Decca/Universal’s hit selling Soprano Hayley Westenra, also from Christchurch, New Zealand. Applauded Yulia’s debut album ‘Into the West’ and Sophomore album ‘Montage’ achieved critical and commercial acclaim, resulting in setting a NZ record with Yulia being the first NZ artist to achieve two back to back number one hit albums on debut. Into the West remained on the charts at number one for four weeks. Awarded Live tours with Russell Watson, Englebert Humperdinck, Amici Forever and Ivan Rebroff resulted in frequent standing ovations. Yulia’s achievements at this time became recognized at the NZ music awards where Yulia received awards for highest selling album and best female vocal album, achieving six times platinum sales and widely establishing Yulia as a ‘Voice of Rare Beauty’. www.yulia.co.nz New Management Yulia was then taken under the wing of ex commercial radio General Manager Glyn MacLean from Oikos Music who developed a plan to take Yulia’s voice to an international audience. Find My Voice Coloratura Mezzo Soprano After a formal assessment revealed Yulia to be a Coloratura Mezzo Soprano, the plan would begin with intensive opera training, voice & stage craft conditioning through live concert performances, extensive development of classical, chanson, folk and popular repertoire and linguistics training in 10 languages. The Plan ★" 2010 Live Concert Series would be recorded to re introduce the now mature voice of Yulia. ★" Winning the Grand Prix in the European Song Competition would affirm a Voice of Rare Beauty. ★" Charity work would ensure that Yulia was all about the music and focused on inspiring audiences. ★" Yulia would be presented to world leading record producers at the peak of her performance. Singing as a Way of Life This began with total immersion (lifestyle) studies in Italian/Russian Opera method with Ukrainian Baritone & violinist Valeriy Maksymov. Choosing the Genre On conclusion of her training Yulia declined an invitation to be included in New Zealand’s Opera fraternity on the advice of a former patron of NZ Opera, Jeremy Commons, to further develop her rare and unique artistic expression in Chanson. www.yulia.co.nz Proving the Genre Yulia was invited to enter the European Song Competition in Riga, Latvia winning with the French chanson song L’Hymne A L’Amour. In that same year Yulia received a national award for ‘Best Live Entertainment’ for her self-produced sell-out live shows across New Zealand. The ‘stripped back’ 2010 Live Concert Series concerts featuring just Yulia and a concert pianist were independently recorded by Yulia to accurately feature her raw vocal performance. Charitable Nature Donating all concert proceeds to charity, Yulia has raised over NZ $1,400,000 for NZ charities since 2007, including Hospice (Palliative Care) and Cancer Society. Being Chosen Divinas, Live at Chambord Castle The 2010 Live Concert Series recordings were then promoted extensively online by Oikos Music and discovered by music producer Craig Leon who put out an invitation to audition Yulia as his Mezzo Soprano ‘singer of choice’ for the Divinas project. At the audition in London, Leon immediately signed Yulia to a four album career launch project with the Divinas concert DVD, CD & PBS promotion serving as the introduction of Yulia to North American audiences. • The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal
Westminster Abbey CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE MEMORIAL SERVICE Sunday 27 March 2011 Noon 2 Diocese of Christchurch, New Zealand A MESSAGE FROM THE BISHOP OF CHRISTCHURCH On 22 February at 12.51 pm, many people in Christchurch were busy at work or having lunch. Schools had closed early that day so a large number of children were on their way home. Very quickly, the enormity of the earthquake became apparent; as buildings collapsed people rushed to save themselves and others with examples of spontaneous, selfless courage—often to total strangers. Now, almost a month later and in the aftermath of the Christchurch Memorial Service, people are still grieving. News of Japan’s disaster sent a chill through Christchurch again. There is thankfulness to be alive and a desire to help others. There is also overwhelming gratitude for the outpouring of love, support, and assistance from other nations. Thank you to the people of London and beyond who have such heart for Kiwis, particularly the strong expatriate community. Thank you for your care and compassion, and please continue to pray for New Zealand and the people of Christchurch. To all those who have lost loved ones our prayers of consolation, compassion, and intercession are offered. ‘Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord. And let light perpetual shine upon them.’ May they rest in peace and rise in glory. May those who remain honour the memory of the departed. They will not be forgotten and the future Christchurch will be shaped by their memory. In the compassionate love of Christ, + Victoria Bishop of Christchurch Christchurch, New Zealand 3 Members of the congregation are kindly requested to refrain from using private cameras, video, or sound recording equipment.

  • Sarah Class Biography
SARAH CLASS BIOGRAPHY “ Sarah Class is one of Britain’s brightest musical stars. Her style is both hauntingly ethereal and sensual, mingling folky influences and a powerfully romantic blend of orchestral and electronic sonorities…..” HMV Classical Reviews Magazine Emmy and Brit nominated Sarah Class has become one of Britains most sought after composers and is described as having ‘the midas touch’ when it comes to creating music. An award winning, accomplished musician, scoring for films, television and the concert arena, producer, songwriter, and singer, Sarah brings a special array of talents to every commission. A classically trained pianist from an early age, Sarah developed a huge love of jazz and improvisation. At 18 she started in the recording studio at Chichester University creating her own compositions and studying jazz piano. She gained a high (B,A Hons.) degree in Music with Related Arts. After graduating she went straight into the music business travelling extensively through Europe and the USA writing and performing with other artists developing her own unique style. Her ability as a composer was soon recognised, and as the attached credits show she quickly started to make her mark in the world of television and subsequently the film in- dustry.Sarah’s first major break was when she was asked to compose the score for an in- dependent feature film titled ‘The Weekend’ starring Gina Rowlands and Brooke Shields. This production brought Sarah to the attention of legendary producer Sir George Martin who subsequently took her under the wing of George Martin Music to help and guide her career.

  • About Face! March Forward to HIFA 2010
About Face! March forward to HIFA 2010 27 April to 2 May It’s time to build stamina and get ready for the excitement, thrills and creative delights of HIFA 2010 – ABOUT FACE, 27 April to 2 May. This joyful, action packed carnival extravaganza remains Zimbabwe’s most positive, most life and art affirming annual event. It has survived the many challenges of the past decade and forged ahead proudly, demonstrating all the best facets of what makes a Zimbabwean a Zimbabwean - industrious, fun-loving, humorous, serious, generous, welcoming, hospitable, and above all, always ready and able to “make a plan” to find their way around obstacles and challenges. These fine qualities have meant that the Festival has happened year by year regardless of difficulties, bringing light to our lives and offering an artistic and cultural beacon on our horizons to which we all eagerly look forward. Turning ABOUT FACE, and from a new vantage point, we can focus on turning things around in our lives and country with hope and optimism. In both our artistic expression and in wider society, HIFA’s theme inspires a positive approach, a resurgence of hope, and taking a new angle. With this intriguing theme ABOUT FACE, HIFA encourages Festival Goers and Artists alike to take a different view, choose another vantage point, look at things with an inquisitive new eye. The theme explores the notion of viewing our worlds from new perspectives or angles, of changing directions, of marching boldly forward, turning things around - perhaps even on their head! Like many of HIFA's themes in the eleven years of this great Festival's existence, ABOUT FACE is designed to provoke thought, catalyse new ideas and be open to interpretation.
