After 20 years the TLP Mission will move to Albacete in Spain. The last TLP Flying Course 2009-3 was going on until 29th May. The next TLP, Flying Course 2009-4, will be the first one to be held in Spain (09.11.2009 - 04.12.2009) Our Day started quite early. Around 8 o'clock we arrived at the North entrance, and already a lot of Spotters were present, trying to find a parking spot (which wasn't easy). Gates were opened and the big waiting began to register. Almost 1 hour later we finally sat in the bus enroute to the spotting place. With almost 1100 Spotters, the place was overcrowded. Around 12 o'clock finally TLP departures started and arrivals were around 15 o'clock. Here are some of the participating aircrafts: FA-109, Belgian Air Force, F-16AM 4055, Polish Air Force, F-16C 1, French Air Force, Dassault Super Étendard MM7052, Italian Air Force, Panavia Tornado IDS G-FRAS, FR Aviation, Falcon 20C MM7239, Italian Air Force, F-16C 348 & 333, French Air Force, Dassault Mirage 2000N FA-87, Belgian Air Force, F-16AM - 4 - SIS (Service Incendie & Sauvetage) Exercise 2009 (Text & Photos by Mike MORO) On 15th May 2009, a quiet Friday evening, Luxembourg Airport was the scene of a major event. An emergency situation, consisting of an aircraft accident on the runway, was trained at the airport. Scenario: A Boeing 737-500 (LX-LGP), carrying 35 passengers, has hit during landing another aircraft, a Learjet (staged by a bus) carrying 10 passengers. In addition, due to the impact, the Learjet hits a technical vehicle driving on the taxiway. The Boeing 737 is only slightly damaged and has stopped on the runway (at position Echo). The Learjet, standing at the taxiway at position India, was severely damaged and took fire. Inside the Boeing most of the passengers were unhurt or slightly hurt. Only 6 passengers were severely hurt. Inside the Learjet and technical car all passengers were severely hurt. Emergency Alarm at 23:32: At 23:00 everything was set up. Security personnel secured the site and LX-LGP was towed to the Echo position. We entered the airport with a bus which let us out onto the runway. At 23:32 the Tower sounded the emergency alarm putting in place a well defined emergency plan. A NOTAM was issued by the airport: A0726/09 - RWY 06/24 CLSD. 15 MAY 21:00 2009 UNTIL 16 MAY 03:59 2009. A0725/09 - ALL TWY CLSD. 15 MAY 21:00 2009 UNTIL 16 MAY 03:59 2009. Seconds after the alarm the Airport Fire Brigade (composed of 8 fire-fighters) arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire and prevent any other fires on the Boeing. Present was also the new truck, received in 2009 (upper right photo). They had to by a new model due to increased traffic at the airport and security regulations. A total of 80 personnel (firemen, Protection Civile, Sauvetage) were at the scene with dozens of vehicles. A very impressive sight. - 5 - Shortly after the alarm, the emergency door of the Boeing openes and passengers evacuate over the wing and are brought to security. But still 6 passengers were inside the Boeing unable to get out by themselves. Fully equipped fire-fighters boarded the plane to get them out. As the number of victims is confirmed, numerous backup emergency vehicles arrive at the scene, coming from Luxembourg (Protection Civile), Lintgen, Sandweiler, Niederanwen, Schüttrange. Later on, backup is called from Bettembourg and other stations as the number of victims is very high. Next to the taxiway a PMA (Poste Médical Avancé) tent was set up to give first medical response to the victims. - 6 - Finally, an hour later every passenger was secured or taken to the hospital and the emergency drill was over. From my point of view the emergency went on very well. Everyone at the scene was send to the right place and I couldn't see any disorder during the rescue operation. Passenger were treated very rapidly and correctly classified by their injuries. The PMA tent worked smoothly and passengers were quickly transported to the hospital.
