This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”. -

MPS stood as a Mecca for Oscar Peterson, George Duke, the Singers Unlimited, and a host of talented young European discoveries. Situated in Villingen, in Germany’s Black Forest region, for some two decades the MPS studio wrote pioneering jazz history through its high- level recording technique and unmistakable aesthetic. Today, the “most perfect sound made in the Black Forest” continues to perk up the ears of analogue fans worldwide. Next, a historical sketch. The label’s actual birth was in 1968, but it had a colorful prelude that entails the famous initials HGBS. As co-owner of the electronics manufacturer SABA, industrialist Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer (HGBS) was not only an ardent audio engineer; he was also an amateur pianist who was crazy about music. In 1958 he built a recording studio above the living room in his villa. It contained the most sophisticated audio equipment available at that time. When Oscar Peterson came to Zurich to perform a concert in 1961, Brunner-Schwer lured Peterson to his villa to play the first house concert in the Black Forest. -

With over sixty venues, numerous festivals, creative labels and a wealth of experimental musicians, Baden-Württemberg‘s jazz scene again and again shows its importance as a driving cultural force. The cultural life has been virtually uneventful for the past year. And yet the organisers and musicians have been working on new ideas – which could hardly be seen or heard from the outside. For many performing artists, music and jazz are an important part of life which they just cannot and do not want to give up. Christoph Neuhaus, whom we award with the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Award 2021, was also creative during the pandemic. Introduction Electric Junk: Krautrock’s Identity Crisis If there is any musical subculture to which this modern age of online music consumption has been particularly kind, it is certainly the obscure, groundbreaking, and oft misunderstood German pop music phenomenon known as “krautrock”. That krautrock’s appeal to new generations of musicians and fans both in Germany and abroad continues to grow with each passing year is a testament to the implicitly iconoclastic nature of the style; krautrock still sounds odd, eccentric, and even confrontational approximately twenty-five years after the movement is generally considered to have ended.1 In fact, it is difficult nowadays to even page through a recent issue of major periodicals like Rolling Stone or Spin without chancing upon some kind of passing reference to the genre. -

Mentgeert Bebop Scat Komp. Wolfgang Dauner Was ist eine Big Band? Die Big Band oder auch Jazz Orchester ist eine große Jazzband. Neben der sogenannten Rhythmusgruppe, die aus Schlagzeug, Bass (Kon- trabass oder E-Bass), Klavier und/oder Gitarre besteht, spielen auch mehrere (meist 5) Saxophone, Posaunen (4) und Trompeten (4) mit. Manchmal kommen auch eine Sängerin/ein Sänger, Querflöten, Klari- netten und Flügelhörner zum Einsatz. Blechbläser können ihren Sound verändern, indem sie Dämpfer auf die Schalltrichter ihres Instruments geben. Entstanden sind Big Bands in den 1920er Jahren in New York und Kan- sas City. Anfangs im Swing Stil beheimatet, spielen Big Bands heute verschiedenste Stile und Richtungen des Jazz wie auch Popularmusik und Crossover. Bekannte Big Band Musiker bzw Leader waren/sind Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Don Ellis, Stan Kenton, Peter Herbolzheimer, Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland u.a. Der Bandleader stellt sich vor! Der 1977 in Stuttgart geborene Komponist, Arrangeur, Bandleader und Posaunist Markus Geiselhart studierte Jazz-Posaune an der Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg. Unter der Leitung von Peter Her- bolzheimer spielte er im Bundesjugendjazzorchester, ehe er 2005 das „Würzburg Jazz Orchestra“ gründete, welches er sechs Jahre lang mu- sikalisch wie organisatorisch leitete. 2006 übersiedelte er nach Wien. Mit dem Mnozil-Brass-Trompeter Thomas Gansch hob er 2008 das Don Ellis Tribute Orchestra aus der Taufe. -

European Echoes: Jazz Experimentalism in Germany, 1950-1975 Harald Kisiedu Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Harald Kisiedu All rights reserved ABSTRACT “European Echoes: Jazz Experimentalism in Germany, 1950-1975” Harald Kisiedu “European Echoes: Jazz Experimentalism in Germany, 1950-1975” is a historical and interpretive study of jazz and improvised music in West and East Germany. “European Echoes” illuminates an important period in German jazz whose beginnings are commonly associated with the notion of Die Emanzipation (“The Emancipation”). Standard narratives of this period have portrayed Die Emanzipation as a process in which mid-1960s European jazz musicians came into their own by severing ties of influence to their African American musical forebears. I complicate this framing by arguing that engagement with black musical methods, concepts, and practices remained significant to the early years of German jazz experimentalism. Through a combination of oral histories, press reception, sound recordings, and archival research, I elucidate how local transpositions and adaptations of black musical methods, concepts, and practices in post-war Germany helped to create a prime site for contesting definitions of cultural, national, and ethnic identities across Europe. Using a case study approach, I focus on the lives and works of five of the foremost German jazz experimentalists: multi-reedist Peter Brötzmann, trumpeter and composer Manfred Schoof, pianist and composer Alexander von Schlippenbach, multi-reedist Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, and pianist Ulrich Gumpert. Furthermore, I discuss new music composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s sustained engagement with African American musical forms in addition to the significance of both Schoof’s and Schlippenbach’s studies and various collaborations with him. -

Theaterhaus Jazztage präsentieren sechs Tage lang eine Reise durch die unterschiedlichsten jazzmusikalischen Entwür- fe, ein Abenteuer, das einen am Ende als glücklichen Menschen entlässt – so mindestens unser Plan. Ob er in Gänze aufgeht, wir hoffen es! Die Chance ist groß, deshalb dieses weit gefächer- te Angebot. Ohne unseren Hauptsponsor Mercedes-Benz Bank, ohne den jazzbegeisterten Theaterhaus-Förderer Heinz Frank mit seiner Firma IMAK, ohne die eher bescheidene Hilfe von Stadt und Land, wäre diese Qualität nicht möglich gewesen. Die Jazztage des Theaterhauses sind schon viele Jahre auch Ort von persönlichen Jubiläen, die gerne in einer stilvollen Umgebung gefeiert werden wollen. Dazu gehört die bekannt große Bereitschaft unseres Publi- kums, mit Freude und Neugier auf die Künstlerinnen und Künstler zu reagieren. Diese Zuneigung gibt dem Festival den besonderen Glanz. In diesem Jahr wird das Festival von den Jubilaren Frédérik Rabold und Reto Weber begleitet. Überragt werden diese wunder- baren Musiker nur von einem, der am 13.10.17 seinen 90. Geburts- tag gefeiert hat: Lee Konitz. Schon in den 1940er Jahren prägte er zusammen mit Charlie Parker die amerikanische Jazzszene. Mit 21 Jahren – im Jahr 1948 – war er in New York Mitglied im berühm- ten Miles Davis/Bill Evans-Nonett, das an den Plattensessions von „Birth of the Cool“ beteiligt war. Diese Aufnahmen aus den Jahren 3 1949/50 sind einer der Ursprünge des „Cool Jazz“. 1952 spielte er mit Lennie Tristano, danach in Stan Kentons Band.
