Tales from the River Bank by a retired boat-builder

Arrival of the Monster

One sunny lunchtime some years ago now, my colleagues and I were just thinking about going home for lunch, when a young man came into the workshop and asked if we could help. Upon enquiring how we may help him, he told us that his car was unfortunately stuck in the river. Being helpful people, I followed the chap whilst my colleagues started up our 'old faithful’ field marshall tractor, with the winch on the back.

From the top of the wall there was no evidence of the car, whereupon the chap explained that it was further up the river around the corner, and pointed towards Battlesbridge. We went down the bank to the riverbed and walked westward towards Fenn Creek - the car still wasn't visible but the chap insisted it was just around the next corner. It was actually in the mouth of Fenn Creek, surrounded by mud. I was amazed he had got so far without ;;0= &3-=)'07=;7%3(-7; getting set in the mud. When I asked him why he had gone so far up river, he replied that he had been trying to drive over to +87Q6;;Q 8"7Q-8/EQ/6$B2EB6B3O(:LJJPHO turn around. < !KMGNCO0QGNNJOQ?Q>NMOPJ4LINJKPO < -LMGHPO0Q@KMFPOQ?QFLO3PIO < P PO1>ND the water had covered the bottom already, preventing the car from being driven up on to it. The stakes on the bottom of the hard also prevented a new route to be taken on to it. We told the car owner that he'd have to drive further into the ever rising water to clear the end of the stakes. We then disconnected the battery and put it on the tractor for safety and attached a rope to the front of the car and to the winch on the back of the tractor. We then eased the car around the stakes. One of my colleagues stood by the car, up to his INVITES YOU TO AN EVENING knees in water, to steer it around the stakes, when all of a sudden M OF CLAIRVOYANCE the rope went slack. Although we had heard that beetles' could M float, we actually had proof that day, when it gently floated past WITH Mark Came the stakes. In fact, he got in, started up, sped off up the road, and we never saw him again. And that was without even a simple Tel: Jo 01702 322422 'thankyou'. We were so glad to have helped!! There were several other frequent 'winchings out' to follow, but none so ungracious.

Early one Saturday morning, at dead low water, my friend and I spotted a conger eel laying lifeless in a pool of water. But the story doesn't end there! chance to lunch!) It had been a magnificent fish, being about eight feet long with a seven inch diameter. Happy Valentine's Day to the most Jane Gardner was the speaker for our January meeting. She is special person in my life. You are my The Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex. Jane love, my heart and my joy. had come straight from Westminster and told us that by March, Love from cuddles Essex will have 368 extra uniformed officers and in addition there will be 20,000 officers across the country. She said that Essex is a safe place to live and although crime is on the increase in Essex crime is below average. She explained how the Police and Fire Service have separate budgets. Jane used to work in the public sector. Jane talked about involvement with making roads safer, reversing the trends of violence, gangs and domestic violence. She explained how they are trying to get more funding as the lower the crime rate the less funding they get. Jane offered to come back and give us another talk and suggested she would bring a police dog along so we are all very much looking forward to seeing her again.

After Jane’s very interesting talk it was time to vote on resolutions. We had five different resolutions and each member was able to vote for the resolution they wanted to be put forward.

Then it was time for tea and cake which was brought to each table whilst Julie from Crouch Valley U3A brought games along for the second part of the meeting. Julie gave us the choice of playing Bingo or playing cards. We opted for cards so she taught us how to play gin rummy. After playing cards we went on to play dominoes. Itwas a very busy and enjoyable evening.

The Village Milkman - by John Coward

My family's links with South Woodham go back quite a number of Wickford Road past the Whalebone, as far as the village boundary years. My Father's family moved from East London in the thirties and then along Creephedge Lane to the 'llgars Manor'. into a property known as York House which stood in York Road J roughly where Thorins Gate is now. For a while they farmed chickens but probably because of the economic difficulties that prevailed at that time the venture was not a success and Dad worked as a farm hand at various farms, initially at Stondon where GJ he lodged for a time and then for the Turner family at their farms in what we used to call 'North Woodham'. My Mother was born in a bungalow called 'Ellen Cottage' which stood in the Hullbridge Road where the motor spares shop now stands. On leaving school Mother went into 'service' working at a house called 'Quilters' which is just off Creephedge Lane near East Hanningfield.

Johnny, being a creature of habit could easily catch out a person unfamiliar with those habits. For instance, it was important that the float was not turned at the end of the round before the last house was delivered to, or Johnny would assume the job was finished and trot back to the dairy, leaving the unsuspecting milkman to chase after him. Deliveries to the Chase and King Edward's Road, which were also impassable to the float, were made using an ex Billingsgate fish market tricycle with one back and two front wheels, between which was a box large enough to carry four milk crates. The trike could be ridden along the narrow cinder tracks As farm work was a reserved occupation Dad could not be called which were the only means of access along these roads, up to serve in the armed forces during the war (although he was particularly in winter. a member of the local Home Guard) hence he was on the scene to marry my Mother in July of 1940 at a, no doubt, fairly frugal As children, this always seemed like a magical time for us, being wartime wedding. They moved into a small bungalow in able to help Dad at the weekends and ride along on the float or Hullbridge Road named 'Ashdene' which still stands almost pedal the trike about the village with a couple of friends in the opposite Mount Pleasant Road. 'box'. When we were a bit older we were sent out on our own with the trike at weekends to make deliveries along the unmade roads. By the mid forties my sister and myself had arrived on the scene Another adventure was riding on Johnnies back. During the and our parents were looking for a small business to hopefully Winter months he was kept in stables at the bottom of the garden make better provision for their growing family. A couple of small but in the better summer weather, he was put out to graze after farms were considered but nothing came of these and it was not work in a field in King Edwards Road. We would be allowed to ride until the early fifties that they settled on purchasing the 'South on his back as Dad led him to the field. When he was turned out Woodham Dairy' from a Mr Eddy Lazell. When one considers what for the first time after the winter Johnny would tear round the field a traumatic experience moving house can be I often wonder how like a mad thing for about ten minutes, only pausing momentarily my parents coped as, not only did they have to pack up and move to roll over on his back. On one memorable occasion, Dad house but on moving day my Father had to go out with Mr Lazell decided to ride him to the field but had barely seated himself on and learn the milk delivery round while Mum took over the Johnny's back when the disagreeable horse reared up and running of the shop. My sister and I were shipped off to relatives deposited Dad on the grass. He never tried again! for the day so did not see much of the actual move but can remember it was a bitterly cold February day with a steady sleet Even in those days, South Woodham sported an annual Carnival blowing in the near gale force easterly wind. Mum and Dad talked procession, which usually meant we would have to help to of that day for years after. decorate the float then dress up in some bizarre costume and be transported round the village, pulled by the ever faithful Johnny. The milk deliveries were made with a horse drawn milk float which fortunately was not a problem to my Father as his years on the There were always a few customers on the milk rounds that caused farms had taught him how to handle horses. Another piece of the milkman some consternation. One such along Creephedge good fortune was that the horse, a bad tempered Welsh cob Lane, could keep talking for ages and it was necessary to creep named Johnny, knew every inch of the rounds so, for the most part up to her door, leave the milk and beat a hasty retreat, hoping she my Father would walk alongside the float delivering milk to the would not see you. Some well meaning folks would make the appropriate houses and Johnny would stop and walk on at exactly milkman a cup of tea which was the last thing he wanted when the right places. The milk was delivered to the Dairy at about six trying to complete the round as early as possible. A lady in The o'clock each morning so it was an early start to load up the float, Chase would present Dad a mug of very hot, very weak tea, which which first delivered to houses in Hullbridge Road. When it came he swore always tasted of onions and on more than one occasion to Mount Pleasant and Victoria Roads, these were not passable he admitted to emptying the contents into the nearest pot plant even with the horse and float so Dad would load up two large while the woman's back was turned. hand held crates and walk up the roads while Johnny and float waited. The round went as far as you can now get along There were several different varieties of milk identified with Hullbridge Road (South) and then Johnny was turned round and coloured foil caps. Another fastidious customer would complain trotted back, turning in to Clements Green Lane delivering as far bitterly if the particular variety she had ordered was not available as you can now go along there and then returned to the Dairy. The and refused to accept an alternative, saying she couldn't stand the float was then reloaded and deliveries were made along the taste of any other milk. So on the odd occassion this occurred, Dad

Due mainly to a lack of cold storage facilities in the early fifties, The business changed little over the years, other than Johnny was milk delivery business was a 365 day a year job. Christmas eventually retired and replaced by an electric float. So that Johnny deliveries would bring out numerous customers offering the man didn't have to be put down, the then headmistress of Elmwood a glass of something a good deal stronger than milk. It was just school, Miss Foulgar, who had a soft spot for him arranged for him to be kept and cared for until he passed on. In the late sixties, new housing estates were springing up around South Woodham and the business needed to expand, so rather than take on the extra work my parents decided to sell up and retire, which they did in 1969 after 17 hard but happy years.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

I was recently invigilating a mock GSCE examination when noticed a huge heart drawn and coloured in with biro, on the back of one of the student’s hands. I went out for coffee with a couple of friends and the café’s whole front window was decorated with hearts. I also attended a lunch where the cards for table numbers had 4 hearts pressed out on the side, they looked very pretty. I certainly began to think ‘Love is in the Air’ – what’s going on?

Funnily enough this theme of love seems to be everywhere, restaurants promoting ‘The most heart-shaped day of the year’, florists advertising ‘book your flowers early’, supermarkets with whole shelves dedicated to gifts of love – chocolates, heart shaped balloons, little mementos saying ‘I Love You’. Then it became clear as I saw hosts of cards with hearts, flowers and sentiments of love…. Yes!!! You’ve guessed it was all for VALENTINES DAY. I remember in my teens having a very long scarf, someone sent me a card that said ‘I love you as long as your scarf.’ I never did find out who it was from, maybe he was rich, famous and wonderfully handsome, but hey! That’s life. LOVE IS IN THE AIR – Actually love is in the air in one form or another all the time, let me explain. I am reminded of three Greek words, outlining three kinds of love, there are more but let me expand on these.

EROS – This is a romantic, passionate love, a sense of being in love or loving someone, Valentine’s Day celebrates this in many ways. PHILIA – Often translated as ‘brotherly love’. Affectionate regard, friendship usually between equals. Love between parents and children. Love between friends as close as siblings in strength, who share common values, interests and activities. It is a dispassionate pure love.

AGAPE – God’s unconditional love, that exists regardless of us or our circumstances. It is the greatest of all the types of love. This love is amazing, powerful and strong. God proved it by sending His Son Jesus to this earth to die for us so we may know forgiveness, freedom, joy, peace and of course His wonderful love in our lives every day. This is the most incredible love of all time. GOD’S LOVE NEVER FAILS-1 Corinthians. 13

The Grace of God In the 1970’s there were only three channels of television to watch. A favourite television programme that brought pleasure to millions on a Sunday evening was ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. It was set in North Yorkshire and each episode followed the stories of a vet. Each story was based on the events in the life of James Herriot whose name in real life was Alfred Wight who had a vets practice in Thirsk. He had found in mid-life that he had the ability to write his experiences from treating animals in his surgeries in Thirsk, nearby villages and also in local farms. These were published in a series of books that were extremely popular world-wide and translated into the TV series.

In one of his books he tells of how he planned to take his wife out for a celebratory dinner at a restaurant some distance from their home. On the way, due to a mishap (the mishaps in each story were the part I used to wait for more than the animals!) he lost his wallet, and found himself at the end of the meal without the means to play (it was before the days of ’plastic’ money). However, to his complete astonishment, the waiter told him that the bill and already been paid. Unknown to Herriot, his senior partner had telephoned the restaurant and told them to charge the meal to him instead. It was his personal gift to the couple.

The astonishment, and relief, of that moment are a description that we feel when we truly experience the manner in which God reaches out and touches us as a person living in 2020. We believe we can get along very well without God. We don’t need to consider his rules, to follow the lessons and teachings in the scriptures, to talk to him in prayer and then to listen and act on the guidance that he gives us. But in a difficult situation or a time of crisis if we turn to him and pray, or go to a church and then feel the comfort which he gives freely, then we can and do experience his personal gift to us.

What is happening is, to use a churchy expression, we are experiencing his grace. This is the word we use to describe a deep love that he has for each one of us, that he will give freely if we ask, believe in him and trust him and acknowledge that when Jesus died on the cross at Calvary he was punished for our misdemeanours and failings. All parts of this contract with God are essential.

If any one of us adds up the ‘cost’ of all the things we have done that were wrong, all the words that we have spoken that were unkind or that were untrue, then the fact that he has paid the bill makes us want to know this wonderful living person who is our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 www.facebook.com/swfocus Focus on Sport FOCUS2 FOCUS on SPORT [ Match Report: Holt 24 South Woodham Ferrers 34 (Bridge Road, 1st February 2020)

Holt’s visitors from Essex produced a strong second half performance to end up as deserved winners in an exciting and high scoring game. In near perfect conditions for running rugby a quiet opening quarter gave little indication of what was to come.

The first score went to the visitors when back row forward Sevie Hurrell charged down a Holt clearance kick for an opportunistic try converted by outside half Alex Baker. Tom Jackson, who was playing at centre for Holt, then made a powerful individual break before handing on to wing Robert Freeman. Hooker Jimmy Goodliffe converted. Next Tom Jackson underlined his current form by running from 30 metres out before being stopped on the line by an illegal challenge. The referee gave a yellow card to the offending South Woodham player and awarded Holt a penalty try, which this season carries an automatic conversion taking the score to 14-7. Almost immediately there was an exchange of tries from two opposing forwards: hooker Andy Sutton scored in the corner for the visitors and Holt captain and back row forward Henry Harrison replied with a fine individual effort for the home team. Neither try was converted and at half time Holt were ahead 19-12.

South Woodham Ferrers began the second half with two quick scores. The first was a result of the growing control that their forwards were imposing. They were awarded an easy penalty in front of the posts but opted for a scrum. Jamie Cox, their scrum half, scored from good possession; Andy Baker again converted. Next wing Warren Duggan ran 30 metres outpacing the defence to cross in the corner. Tom Jackson then did the same at the other end for his second try, securing a welcome four-try bonus point for Holt. On a poor day for place kicking neither try was converted so the score was level at 24-24.

Both defenses were tiring and South Woodham were now on top. Warren Duggan scored two more tries, neither of which were converted. For the first he joined a rolling forward maul; for the second he was given an easy run to score wide out following sustained pressure. This gave him his hat trick of tries, greatly pleasing his two young children who were amongst the travelling spectators. Although they will be disappointed with the result, and will now face a tough challenge to avoid relegation, Holt can have no complaints. They produce exciting rugby but are often short of the possession that would enable them to play a more measured and controlled game. The flashes of individual brilliance are not enough to produce the desired results in a competitive league.

Holt’s Norfolk Brewhouse Man of the Match was prop Aaron Cole.
