The workshop was organized by University High School (Uni High) in response to the overwhelming enthusiasm on the part of teachers who attended a presentation made by Hiroyo Demers and Carol Bond at the 1985 Annual Conference of the Illinois Foreign Language Teachers Association ("Why Japanese in the High School Curriculum?"). To everyone's great surprise, we learned that there are already in the State of Illinois a significant number of teachers and administrators committed to developing Japanese language programs in Illinois high schools. Dr. Russell Ames, Director of University High School opened the program with a description of the diverse curriculum development and research projects currently underway at Uni. Hiroyo Demers gave presentations on materials and methods, teaching culture, and. audio-visual resources. A tour of Japan House and a tea ceremony demonstration by Prof. Kimiko Gunji,was the highlight of the workshop. Throughout the day, teachers enjoyed meeting others who shared their interest in Japan to exchange ideas, insights, and experiences. A second workshop is planned for March. ILLINOIS JAPANESE LANGUAGE TEACHERS NETWORK Participants at the December workshop agreed unanimously on the importance of working together to advocate the teaching of Japanese language and culture in high school and to provide a means of support and communication among teachers of Japanese. And so... the Illinois Japanese Language Teachers Network was formed. At this point the organization is entirely informal. Our "membership" extends to everyone on our current mailing list. There are no dues and no officers! We welcome you to the IJLTN! IJLTN NEWSLETTER Hiroyo Demers volunteered to edit the first issue of the Newsletter of the IJLTN, and University High School will provide materials, secretarial assistance, and postage. The purpose of the newsletter is to provide a means of communication among Japanese language teachers, teache:s-to-be, and high school administrators. We hope to publish at least one more newsletter this spring, and we depend on you for material. Your ideas, questions, experiences, anecdotes, and announcements are all welcome. Please send your newsletter contributions to Hiroyo Demers, University High School, 1212 West Springfield Avenue, Urbana, IL 61801. Please also send names and addresses of anyone who might like to receive a copy of the newsletter. We would also welcome your suggestions for a name for the newsletter. PLANS FOR SECOND WORKSHOP UNDERWAY A second workshop on Teaching Japanese Language and Culture will be held in Urbana on Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15. We have so far tentatively planned the following presentations: 3 profSeiieh4 2. Prof. Chieko Mulhern: "How to Teach Culture through Japanese Literature and Film" Prof. Yasuko Makino: "Development of a High School Library Collection in Japanese" Carol Bond: "The Center for Improvement of Teaching Japanese Language and Culture in High School" Cliff Darnall: "The Japanese Language Program at Bloomington High School" Hiroyo Demers: "Activities and Games for the Japanese Classroom" Atsushi Fukada: "Teaching Japanese by Computer" There will, of course, be ample time for discussion and informal exchange of ideas. You will receive in a few weeks, more detailed informationon the program, place, time, accommodations, and cost of the Workshop. CREATE INTEREST IN JAPANESE BEFORE YOU START YOUR PROGRAM Teachers at several schools have expressed interest in startinga Japanese language class but are waiting for administrative approvalor until they get the necessary credits for certification to teach the language. At Bloomington High School, we formed a Japan Club a full twoyears before we actually began teaching the language. A.t Japan Club meetings, we learned simple expressions in Japanese, played Japanese games suchas karuta, and saw movies and slides on Japan. Three or four time a year we would meet in the home economics kitchen and prepare a Japanese meal together, suchas sukiyaki, curry-rice, tempura, or even just ramen. At a local art fair, we sold origami and also bookmarks with the purchaser's name written in katakana.We took a field trip to Chicago and visited a Japanese restaurant,grocery store, and book store. And of course, there were volleyball games against other clubs. Japan Club has always been a small but very active club.Coverage in the yearbook and space in the morning announcements surely causedsome students to think more about Japan than they would have otherwise, and it surely contributed to the large enrollment in Japanese I, offered for the first time this year. Anything that helps to raise interest in Japan and Japanese in the community may pay off when it comes to getting acourse approved and then finding enough students to make it a "go". Two years ago, my wife and I contacted the local adult education office and setup evening shortcourses in basic Japanese conversation. (A teaching certificate is not required for adult education.) As an additional benefit, I found that I could later usemany of the materials that I developed for the eveningcourse in my regular high school course. 4 --Cliff Darnall, Bloomington High School A CREATIVE CLASSROOM ACTIVITY Students receive a printed copy of "Micsuko's weekly desk calendar" which will have the days of the week and dates in kanji,. Different activities will be listed under each date. Students will be asked questions on these.     The History, Tradition, and Culture of Kyoto Prefecture Kyoto Prefectural Education Center Preface The world has become a smaller place due to the development of high-speed machines and information technology. Nowadays the ability to show the world our identity as Japanese people including our culture and tradition, especially the ability to communicate with the rest of the world, is needed more than ever. Throughout history, Kyoto has been at the center of Japanese culture and history. Kyoto is therefore a good starting point for communicating with the world about Japanese culture and history. In this textbook, the history, tradition, and culture of each region in Kyoto Prefecture are introduced in English so that you, as high school students, can be proud to tell people from abroad about your hometown and Kyoto in English. The contents of chapter Ⅰto Ⅲ in this textbook are based on a Japanese textbook which was written for new teachers working in Kyoto Prefecture. Some parts have been erased and changed, and in other parts, new information was added so that high school students can understand better. You might find some difficult words in the textbook, however, the sentence structures are rather simple and readers with a basic knowledge of grammar can read on with a dictionary at hand. Furthermore, as the Japanese explanations are available on the right page, you can utilize them as a reference if the English is too difficult to understand. Besides, this textbook would be useful not only for students but also for people from abroad who don't know much about Kyoto Prefecture.

(Digenea: Opecoelidae: Plagioporinae), and an Unidentified Opecoelid from Freshwater Fishes of Japan Takeshi SHIMAZU (Accepted for publication; July 2, 1990) Abstract A new genus, Neoplagioporus gen. n., is proposed in the subfamily Plagioporinae Manter, 1947 (Opecoelidae). It is morphologically characterized chiefly by the distinctly bipartite, short and straight seminal vesicle, the sinistrally submedian genital pore, the usually trilobate or rarely smooth to bilobate ovary, and the vitelline follicles usually entering the forebody or rarely being confined to the hindbody. Neoplagioporus zacconis (Yamaguti, 1934), comb. n. (= Caudotestis zacconis Yamaguti, 1934, type species), TV. ayu (Takahashi, 1928), comb. n. Tarongers 4 46022 València Tel. ++34 605288430 Published in Animation: an Interdisciplinary Journal, 9(1). 2014 Abstract: The aim of this article is to show the relationship between Japanese folktales and Japanese anime as a genre, especially how the intertextuality with traditional tales and myth subvert its conventional use. To meet this goal I have used Toriyama’s successful Dragon Ball series, which has enjoyed continued popularity right from its first publication in the 1980s. I analyse the parallelism between Dragon Ball and a classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, its main source. However, there are many other folkloric references present in Dragon Ball connected to religion and folktales. The author illustrates this relationship with examples taken from the anime that correspond to the traditional Japanese Folklore but that are used with a subversive goal which makes it a rich source for analysis and for Literary Education. He shows that Haley used her necklace made of piano wire and a hook in her purse, looped the wire around the victim's neck and hooked the wire onto the roller coaster tracks during the ride. Haley explains that the victim broke up with her and she had planned a murder suicide. After solving this case Jimmy follows two suspicious men in black from the roller coaster case and watches them make a clandestine deal. Jimmy is attacked from behind by the two men and forced to take a newly developed poison that should kill him.     Two Development Scenarios for Kameoka Flood Plain, Japan: Requirements for a Paradigm Shift to Green Infrastructure Yukihiro Morimoto Abstract The local government of Kyoto Prefecture in Japan is currently planning to develop a large sports stadium in Kameoka floodplain. The floodplain is habitat to a nationally registered fish species, the Japanese kissing loach (Leptobotiacurta). However, the controversy between conservation and development is not simple because the habitat of the species is a river controlled to irrigate rice paddies. Local farmers, who are willing to develop the stadium, have been taking part in conservation activities by damming the river water to facilitate an egg-laying site for the fish. Therefore, a viable plan must preserve the habitat and be a comprehensive solution that supports the agricultural environment. Furthermore, the stadium project marks a watershed of two development scenarios of the Kameoka basin: (1) Gray Infrastructure, which is the conventional construction design used to deal with the risk of flooding and (2) Green Infrastructure, which is flexible, nature-oriented land use and design. The rare species still inhabits Kameoka basin because the basin is prone to flooding because of the narrow bottleneck, the Hozu valley, which has been providing impressive beautiful scenery and boating downstream to the nationally registered scenic beauty of Arashiyama in Kyoto.     71 Japanese Folklore in Thai Modern Literature: The Intertextuality in Kon Kimono Kosit TIPTIEMPONG Tokyo University of Foreign Studies Abstract Kon Kimono, or The Kimono Trap, is a Thai novel written by Pongsakorn. It was published in 2014 and was quickly adapted into a TV series in 2015. As the title suggests, readers can expect some connections with Japan in this literary work, especially something about how Japanese kimono has crossed national boundaries. This article primarily attempts to scrutinize the Japanese elements in Kon Kimono by drawing on the theory of intertextuality. The main objective is to examine how Japanese folklore, specifically symbolized by the word kimono, is presented and becomes incorporated into a Thai novel. The intertextual analysis leads to the conclusion that intertextuality plays an important role both in the structure and the contents of the story through direct and indirect references. Four major sources that work as the core are Tanabata, crane, fox, and snow woman. I Introduction Japanese culture has enjoyed international recognition for quite some time.
