Visiting authors, illustrators, and graphic designers will support the student writers and book design and 826 Boston staff will collaborate with teachers to develop a standards-based curriculum that meets students' needs. Abada-Capoeira San Francisco $10,000 San Francisco, CA To support a capoeira residency and performance program for students in San Francisco area schools. Students will learn capoeira, a traditional Afro-Brazilian art form that combines ritual, self-defense, acrobatics, and music in a rhythmic dialogue of the body, mind, and spirit. -

Pasadena Raises Minimum Wage - Story on Page 6 SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2016 VOLUME 10 NO. 6 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SIERRA MADRE’S AWARD WINNING SENIOR LIVING FACILITY For years, the site of what is now known as ‘The Kensington’ was an eyesore in the middle of Sierra Madre. Once the home of a skilled nursing facility and a hospital, the building sat boarded up for years while the property owners tried to find a buyer that would come up with a use that was compatible with the ambience of the town. Finally, after months of discussions and community meetings, the Kensington developers presented a plan that was overwhelmingly approved by voters (77% of those voting approving) and complying with the conditions of the city’s downtown preservation ordinance, Measure V in 2012. Construction began in 2013 and the first residents moved into the facility in February, 2015. As the physical impact of the new facility was of utmost concern to Sierra Madre Then and Now: Above Kensington Senior Living Facility on W. According to Tim McCarthy, chairman of NAHB’s 55+ Housing Industry Council, “the judges saw [among the finalists] wonderful examples of … innovative floor plans, universal design skillfully integrated into the home, communities with beautiful lifestyle amenities and homes located close to local shops, restaurants and parks.” The Kensington Sierra Madre was designed by architect HPI Architecture and interior designer Klang & Associates. -

SPIRITED THINGS: Sacred Arts of the Black Atlantic TRAVELING EXHIBITION SERVICE 2 SPIRITED THINGS INTRODUCTION he ruthless triangular trade that flourished between the continents of Europe, Africa, and the Americas T brought millions of enslaved Africans to the Americas, where African priests—assimilating some of the practices and beliefs of the radically new cultures they encountered—gradually adapted their ancestral religions to their people’s new and dire circumstances. The Afro-Atlantic religions are products of Africans’ long-running cosmopolitanism, and represent a complex, syncretic response to the tragic beginnings of globalization. This exhibition explores a family of religions that emerged from the centuries-long turmoil and diaspora of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. TRAVELING EXHIBITION SERVICE 3 4 SPIRITED THINGS SPIRITED THINGS: Spirited Things explores a family of religions that evolved in the context SACRED ARTS OF of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. At its root are the ancestors of the Yorùbá people and their gods, called òrìṣà (in Yorùbá), orichas (Spanish), orixás THE BLACK ATLANTIC (Portuguese), or orishas (English). West African monarchs and merchants invoked the òrìṣà in rituals of healing and for the protection of their interests in the coastal trade with their European counterparts. Later, West Africans enslaved in the Caribbean and South America adapted these same gods to their own, more existential needs of mutual assistance, healing, and spiritual uplift, often in defiance of their captors’ attempts to suppress their ancestral traditions. They disguised and amplified their continued worship of African gods by combining them with similar Roman Catholic saints and indigenous spirits. This blending of African, European, and Native American iconography and practices is a hallmark of the religions of the African diaspora, which include Haitian Vodou, Cuban Santería (also called Regla de Ocha), Brazilian Candomblé, and Caribbean Spiritism. -

Playhouse Village Self-Guided Tour
Playhouse Village Walking Tour Pasadena, settled by a group of farmers from Indiana in the 1870s, originally developed along the Arroyo Seco to the west. Playhouse Village contains approximately 34 buildings, which represent the eastward growth of the City’s urban character and amenities during the 1920s and 1930s, after Pasadena’s economy had changed from agriculture to tourism. Development of this area was spurred by the construction of Pasadena’s grand and imposing Civic Center in the 1920s, promoting the construction of residential, religious and cultural facilities in the area we stand in today. Tour commences in front of USC Pacific Asia Museum, 46 N. Los Robles Ave. USC Pacific Asia Museum (46 N. Los Robles) – The leading Pasadena architectural firm of Marston, Van Pelt and Maybury was commissioned in 1924 by art dealer Grace Nicholson to design her Treasure House of Oriental Art. It was to be her dream Chinese palace, a combination private residence and art gallery. Modeled after buildings in Beijing’s Forbidden City, it is 32,570 square feet, and features an authentic Chinese court garden and a roof made of green bamboo- patterned tiles. Walk north to the corner of Los Robles and Union and look west, to City Hall and the remaining portion of the Maryland Hotel. Construction on City Hall was begun in 1925 and it is in the Italian Renaissance Revival style. It was designed by John Bakewell and Arthur Brown, who also designed San Francisco’s City Hall, as well as much of the Stanford and Berkeley campuses. The Maryland Hotel once extended all the way to Colorado Boulevard, but only the portion you see remains today. -

Cornerstone Native Nation
Photo: ASU Gammage / Tim Trumble Native Nation: An Interactive, Immersive Event Native Nation takes place amidst a working art fair, where audiences are encouraged to wander from booth-to-booth, chatting with Native vendors, eating local food, and perusing Native artworks and fashion. Within that experience, scripted scenes erupt around the audience, at times asking audiences to participate in the scene and with each other. The lines between actors and audience, reality and theater, land and people, self and community, are quickly dissolved. Based on the lives of local Native community members, Native Nation weaves together stories of the foster system, the treatment of two-spirited people, environmental justice, food sovereignty, missing and murdered Indigenous women, the reentry process for veterans, and youth efforts to bring about change through activism. The script for Native Nation was created over a two year-long development process led by Sicangu Lakota playwright Larissa FastHorse and Cornerstone director Michael John Garcés, in collaboration with dozens of Indigenous community members throughout Arizona. Through Cornerstone’s signature community-engaged theater process, community members participated in story circles, script readings, and throughout the rehearsal process to develop characters, narratives, and ideas that bring to light modern issues in the community. The world premiere of Native Nation at Arizona State University Gammage in April of 2019 was the largest Indigenous theatrical experience in the history of American theater, with a two-day arts festival, exhibiting works from over 400 Indigenous artists from 22 federally-recognized tribes native to Arizona.
