Howell, Thank you for Benny & Nina’s sunrise. Thank you for Hamilton’s hurricane & Burr’s self-made walls. Thank you for sculpting in light & elevating every moment you touched. Where will I hide now if not at your tech table? I miss your smile & kindness already. Rest easy, pal. – Lin-Manuel Miranda Our beloved friend and collaborator Howell Binkley passed away today. He painted with light and took us to places and times we could only dream of going. One of the finest lighting designers in the business and an even better human being. We will miss him terribly. – Hamilton Family I’m so blue. – King George Light to Howell was what paint is to a great master of the canvas. I hope his victories and accomplishments, both professional and personal, will serve to inspire us. His contribution to the work we’ve done and his support for all of us sets an example that will surely live on if we welcome it. – Des McAnuff, Director, Jersey Boys, Ain’t Too Proud Howell Binkley’s work was the best in the world. I would have watched Hamilton with the sound off just to watch his lighting. More than that, he was such a truly good person, always smiling and encouraging to everyone. – Sankoff and Hein, Writers of Come from Away He could see actors and sets and costumes and staging and choreography and hear sound and music and speech and then, somehow, illuminate all of it to bring our stories just a little bit closer to our souls. – Jeffrey Seller, Producer, Hamilton, Director, Fly Howell Binkley July 25, 1956 – August 14, 2020 .

Despite being in New York, it has qualities of a small town, both the camaraderie and the suffocating overfamiliarity of everyone knowing everyone else’s business.
