    1 Old, Unhappy, Far-off Things A Little Learning I have not been in a battle; not near one, nor heard one from afar, nor seen the aftermath. I have questioned people who have been in battle - my father and father-in-law among them; have walked over battlefields, here in England, in Belgium, in France and in America; have often turned up small relics of the fighting - a slab of German 5.9 howitzer shell on the roadside by Polygon Wood at Ypres, a rusted anti-tank projectile in the orchard hedge at Gavrus in Normandy, left there in June 1944 by some highlander of the 2nd Argyll and Sutherlands; and have sometimes brought my more portable finds home with me (a Minie bullet from Shiloh and a shrapnel ball from Hill 60 lie among the cotton-reels in a painted papier-mache box on my drawing-room mantelpiece). I have read about battles, of course, have talked about battles, have been lectured about battles and, in the last four or five years, have watched battles in progress, or apparently in progress, on the television screen. I have seen a good deal of other, earlier battles of this century on newsreel, some of them convincingly authentic, as well as much dramatized feature film and countless static images of battle: photographs and paintings and sculpture of a varying degree of realism. But I have never been in a battle. And I grow increasingly convinced that I have very little idea of what a battle can be like. Neither of these statements and none of this experience is in the least remarkable.

    THE EAST INDIA CLUB SOME ACCOUNT OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE CLUB & STAFF WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR ONE 1914-1919 & WORLD WAR TWO 1939-1945 THE NAMES LISTED ON THE CLUB MEMORIALS IN THE HALL DEDICATION The independent ambition of both Chairman Iain Wolsey and member David Keating to research the members and staff honoured on the Club’s memorials has resulted in this book of Remembrance. Mr Keating’s immense capacity for the necessary research along with the Chairman’s endorsement and encouragement for the project was realised through the generosity of member Nicholas and Lynne Gould. The book was received in to the Club on the occasion of a commemorative service at St James’s Church, Piccadilly in September 2014 to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Second World War members were researched and added in 2016 along with the appendices, which highlights some of the episodes and influences that involved our members in both conflicts. In October 2016, along with over 190 other organisations representing clubs, livery companies and the military, the club contributed a flagstone of our crest to the gardens of remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The issues in which it was published are: Issue Date Pages 48 November 1832 414 to 420 49 December 1832 565 to 571 50 January 1833 130 to 136 51 February 1833 273 to 280 It is the earliest known printed history of the Regiment, and was used by Richard Cannon in his Historical Record of The Twenty-Third Regiment, or The Royal Welsh Fusiliers; containing an Account of the Formation of the Regiment in 1689, and of its subsequent Services to 1850 , published by Parker, Furnivall & Parker in 1850. Cannon, writing over 15 years after 1832, made some corrections to the text. He also brought the history up to date. The next history, published in 1889 – Major Rowland Broughton-Mainwaring’s Historical Record of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, late the Twenty-Third Regiment, or Royal Welsh Fusiliers (The Prince of Wales̓ s Own Royal Regiment of Welsh Fuzeliers); containing an Account of the Formation of the Regiment in 1689, and of its subsequent Services to 1889 , Hatchards, 1889 – copied Cannon up to 1850. This US Journal history therefore forms the basis of the 1850 and 1889 histories. Without a detailed check, it is not known what changes were made to the 1832–33 text. The text which follows is not a completely accurate copy of the original.
