Library Love Stories Mrs. Ann Walker Sustaining Library Supporter My husband, Mark, and I moved to Frederick in 2014, following our youngest daughter who ended up here after graduating from Virginia Tech. After many years as a Virginia state employee, I am now happily retired. I was the “Front Desk Lady” at our local community college and met every single student that walked through the door. The job was lots of fun, but also exhausting! In my retirement, I love having more time to devote to gardening, yoga, reading, and the internet. I get together weekly with a worldwide group of friends on “What Am I Reading Wednesday” to talk about books and exchange recommendations. The first book I remember completely loving was Linnets and Valerians by Elizabeth Goudge. It had humor, mystery, magic, and an amazing bee-filled enchanted garden that I am continually aspiring to create in my backyard. The library has been an important place throughout my life. As a young teen, I explored the world of classical music through my library’s record collection and discovered a love of opera. I’ve found that as a parent I was able to instill a love of books and learning in my children. Last summer, I participated in the Summer Reading Challenge and got to explore Frederick and read outside my comfort level. I got to watch my husband, who has not been a great library user in the past, discover audio books on Hoopla. The libraries offer such fabulous opportunities that I think how lucky we are to be alive right now! I choose to support the library through “Checkbook Activism.” We don’t do or cable television, and we aren’t big movie goers, so for us, it’s reading. The library offers services that are free; I don’t mind giving back in this way. In fact, my first gift to the library was made last November, on Giving Tuesday. I was so delighted by the help I’d received from Teresa Vorce, Materials Manager, in discussing book purchase suggestions that I made a gift in her honor. Every library employee I’ve come in contact with has been an absolute pleasure to work with. Mr. John Sinnicki Teen Advisory Board Volunteer I’m a junior at Urbana High School, and I’ve lived in Frederick my entire life. When I’m not volunteering at the library, I’m working on school work, listening to music, playing the piano, swimming, or reading. I’ve been going to the library my whole life. I remember my mom would bring two gigantic bags and fill them with books. We would check out, and the receipt would be 6-feet long. And, honestly, the library has been an important part of my life, not just checking out books but discovering new authors. As a young person, the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling got me interested in reading, so I think of them as my favorite books and where my love of reading began. Of the entire series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was by far the best one in my opinion, and so it’s my favorite. Aside from books, the library staff has played a significant role in my decision to become a volunteer. As I’ve gotten to know them better, I think of them more like friends. When I was looking for a volunteer project in 2014, I stumbled upon the library’s STEM lab. The more I learned about the Lab, the more I thought it was a good fit. I decided to get involved and now spend almost every Saturday volunteering at the STEM lab. Overall, I’ve loved my time as a library patron and volunteer at the C. Burr Arts Library in downtown Frederick. I can check out books and give back to my community by volunteering, which has been an incredibly enriching experience for me. I want other kids and teens to see the library as a cool place to be, and I hope I can serve as a good role model.
