HSE, Moscow Pictures of gardens could be found in Japanese woodblock prints of different genres from bijin-ga and erotic prints to kabuki scenes and landscapes. While literal descriptions and gardening manuals are recognized as sources on the garden history, there has been little discussion about the representation of the gardens in ukiyo-e prints in spite of many examples of thoroughly depicted surroundings that can be found among them. So, this study attempts to show that ukiyo-e prints could provide miscellaneous information on gardens and their perception during the Edo period. Considering an amount of material a few criteria for selecting prints were established. This study focuses on prints where a garden is depicted as part of the surrounding environment, correlates with the represented building, and is clearly viewed from outside or inside the mansion. The analysis of the prints of such artists as Chōbunsai Eishi (1756-1829), Katsukawa Shuncho (1723-1793) Torii Kiyonaga (1752-1815), and Kitagawa Utamaro (1754-1805) confirms that ukiyo-e could enrich our knowledge about the garden types, layouts, plants, as well as pastimes favoured by townspeople during the Edo period. More than that, the garden elements could be read as a visual comment to the subject itself. For example, a coloration and selection of the plants could signify the month of the year, while geomantic and Buddhist symbolism associated with gardening design could reveal some hidden meaning through the stone-and- water arrangements pictured in the print. .

The influence of Japanese art is a phenomenon that is now called Japonisme , and it spread widely throughout Western art. It is quite hard to make a clear definition of Japonisme because of the breadth of the phenomenon, but it could be generally agreed that it is an attempt to understand and adapt the essential qualities of Japanese art.     Plant Dye Identification in Japanese Woodblock Prints Michele Derrick, Joan Wright, Richard Newman oodblock prints were first pro- duced in Japan during the sixth Wto eighth century but it was not until the Edo period (1603–1868) that the full potential of woodblock printing as a means to create popular imagery for mass consumption developed. Known broadly as ukiyo-e, meaning “pictures of the float- ing world,” these prints depicted Kabuki actors, beautiful women, scenes from his- tory or legend, views of Edo, landscapes, and erotica. Prints and printed books, with or without illustrations, became an inte- gral part of daily life during this time of peace and stability. Prints produced from about the 1650s through the 1740s were printed in black line, sometimes with hand-applied color (see figure 1). These col- ors were predominantly mineral (inorganic) pigments supplemented by plant-based (organic) colorants. Since adding colors to a print by hand was costly and slowed pro- duction, the block carvers eventually hit upon a means to create a multicolor print using blocks that contained an “L” shaped groove carved into the corner and a straight groove carved further up its side in order to align the paper to be printed (see figure 2).     Japonisme in Print Japanese Style/Western Culture lthough part of the Museum’s series on Japanese color woodblock prints, this Aexhibition takes a different approach by recognizing the impact of Japanese images on European and American printmaking in the late-nineteenth and early- twentieth centuries. During that time Japan’s involvement with the Western world was undergoing fundamental changes. From 1867 to 1868, Japanese political rule transitioned from the military dictatorship of the shogunate to the restoration of the authority of the emperor. Under the leadership of Emperor Meiji (r. 1867–1912), Japan experienced major shifts in political and social structures, economics, technology, industry, militarization, and foreign relations, especially with the West. As a signal of its new position in global affairs, Japan sponsored a pavilion at the 1867 Parisian Exposition universelle d’art et d’industrie (Universal Exhibition of Art and Industry), the second ever international showcase of its kind. This pivotal event, along with Japan’s burgeoning global trade, exposed European and American audiences to the distinctive materials and modes of representation of Japanese art, creating a furor for things à la Japonaise. The Western works of art, decorative art, and architecture referencing or imitating Japanese styles have come to be known as Japonisme, a French term that reflects the trend’s flashpoint in Paris in 1867. Japonisme, or Japanism, came to be an essential facet in the development of Modernist aesthetics and idioms, as the European and American prints showcased here demonstrate. So, ukiyo-e offer both a description of the world of Edo (present-day Tokyo)—in particular the pleasures, foods, daily life, and culture on offer there—and the heavy bustle of the city, at that stage the largest and most densely populated in the world (with over a million inhabitants by the eighteenth century). These prints present fantastical exaggera- tions of life and often insert historical and mythical characters into contemporary contexts. Ukiyo conjures up a sense of the cultural pursuits, pastimes, and pleas- ures that grew up to serve a growing merchant class. Furthermore, ukiyo contains within it the idea of a carefree existence; of living for the moment and relishing the aesthetic aspects of life. This attitude, prevalent in the urbane richness of Edo, is encapsulated in the dominant aesthetic known as “iki” (̌). It was hedonistic and largely indifferent to status or rank, though the city itself was governed elsewhere by strict hierarchy. The “floating world” was also a world of the theater and of music, but, crucially, this was a world accessible though money. This aesthetic, then, and the ways in which it was embedded within daily life and attitudes to nature, is central to the identity of the pictures that imagined ukiyo.

    El grabado bijin-ga o estampa de mujeres: De Harunobu a Chikanobu Autor: David Diez Galindo A lo largo de toda la historia de la estampa japonesa ukiyo-e, han existido una serie de tipologías muy comunes que se han ido representando, en mayor o menor medida, en este tipo de grabados japoneses. Son temas como la naturaleza y el paisaje, la representación de geishas y samuráis (como prototipo del ideal japonés que se tenía en Occidente), las estampas eróticas, otras de carácter literario o histórico, la representación también de actores de teatro kabuki, o la representación de “mujeres bellas” denominadas bijin-ga. Será esta la temática de la que se va a hablar. Este tipo de estampa hace referencia a la representación de mujeres que respondían al ideal de belleza japonés que existía por aquel momento. El término “bijin( -ga” 美人画) se define literalmente como “imágenes de mujeres hermosas”” (bi significa “hermosa”, jin es “persona” y ga es “pintura”) independientemente de la época en la que fuese creada. Los grabadores más conocidos dentro de este aspecto realizaron obras de este tipo, aunque existen algunos de estos artistas que son reconocidos por llevar a esta temática a su máximo nivel, entre los que se podría destacar a Suzuki Harunobu, Torii Kiyonaga, Toyohara Chikanobu o Kitagawa Utamaro. Principalmente se representaba a cortesanas, geishas, actrices, etc., como seres idílicos, hermosos y de una belleza enorme. Emma Wise ART 162 – A with Honors Japanese Influence on Western Impressionists: The reciprocal exchange of artistic techniques During the nineteenth century, Paris was at the heart of modern art movements. It was during this time the Impressionist painters began to display their work in salons. Occurring at the same time was the influx of Japanese goods into Europe, including the artistic products. In Paris there was a large exhibition of Japanese ukiyo-e prints at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts during the spring of 1890 (Ives). The Japanese woodblock prints had an impact on western art and is visible in the work of the Impressionists. This can be seen through the painting and printmaking produced during the nineteenth century. The Impressionist movement paralleled Japan during the Edo period. During the two time periods, there was an increase of leisure time which led to the creation of art. In Japan, the creation of this art created a growing industry of accessible art. The increased leisure time in Paris fueled the art community. During the Edo period in Japan, there was an increase in economic growth that strengthened the middle class.

This fellowship allowed me to continue research in the Special Collections department begun during the previous academic year under the guidance of the college curator, Brian Wallace. My initial interest was guided by the focus of my research, the influence of Japanese art on western modernism. I began by studying the college’s Japanese prints from the Edo period (1615-1868), a key source for the late nineteenth century conception of Japan in the west. As in many collections of ukiyo-e, bijinga, “pictures of beautiful people,” make up the majority of Bryn Mawr’s holdings of Japanese prints.

    + EXPLAINING UKIYO-E DAVID BELL A Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Otago, Dunedin New Zealand November 2002 2 ABSTRACT The term ukiyo-e refers to a distinctive phenomenon in Japanese art. Ukiyo-e can be defined temporally, geographically and socially; most importantly, it developed its own distinctive stylistic character. Most studies of ukiyo-e have been founded on a descriptive mode: they have sought to identify its principal characteristics, and to describe the different projects of its various schools and artists. Recent research has shifted into a more explanatory mode, locating explanations of ukiyo-e‟s distinctive pictorial character in descriptions of the socio-cultural context to which it pertained. This project seeks to establish richer explanations for the pictorial character of ukiyo-e. It argues that appropriate explanations may be found through a critical appraisal of the conditions which constrained and stimulated the enterprises of ukiyo-e artists. It finds these conditions to be manifest in the conceptual foundations that informed its artists; in the ways artists learned the knowledge and skills of their craft; in the sorts of function ukiyo-e pictures were required to perform; and in two conditions of the artists‟ medium: pictorial devices or conventions and the spatial constraints of their media, and the material conditions with which they worked. No matter how closely works of ukiyo-e artists conformed to the pictorial character common to the school as a whole, each individual also followed an independent pathway. The final chapter acknowledges the ways individual artists were disposed to work differently within the auspices of the broader enterprise.
