A number of papers deals with the use of new methods of research, as well as the effect of environmental factors on marketable hydrobionts. (3)* GENERAL PROBLEMS. METHODS OF RESEARCH. Indirect proof of the effect of brief wide—range water temperature changes on mass spawning of these organisms is the fact that larvae are encountered throughout the year and their numbers fluctuate frequently during the warm periods. Consequently, along with the factors known to stimulate mass spawning of invertebrates in the coastal zone of the sea, i.e. half—month and monthly lunar rhythms (Korringa, 1947) and the appearance of high concentrations of ultra— and nanoplankton, which is the main food of larvae (Rzhepishevsky, 1960), some sig- nificance should also be attached to tidal phenomena. (4) UDC 574.52(262.5) Present hydrochemical conditions in the northwestern part of the Black Sea by G.P. Garkavaya, Yu.I. Bogatova (Odessa branch of INBYuM) The study of the hydrochemical conditions in the northwestern part of the Black Sea at the present time is particularly impor- tant to the determination of biological productivity. The deve- lopment of eutrophication processes, which began in the 1970's and covered a large part of the Black Sea, altered the hydro- chemical characteristics of sea waters significantly. Research into the seasonal dynamics, salinities, pH, EH, and the content of oxygen, silicon and mineral and organic nitrogen and phosphorus compounds has shown that they depend greatly on the volume of river runoff and the time at which high water begins. A special role is played by the change in the qualitative characteristic of the freshwater runoff. During the period of 1977-1982 (high—water years), we have noted the formation of oxygen—deficient fields in the bottom layer of the sea from the mouth of the Dnieper—Bug Liman to the Danube. They are formed predominantly at depths of 10-20 m in summer, and at depths of 20-36 m in autumn, which is related to the period of accumulation and mineralization of organic matter in the bottom layer of the sea. As anaerobic processes take place and reduce the pH and EH values in the bottom layer, we note intensive discharge of ammonium compounds, phosphates and silicon from the muddy waters in the bottom layer of the sea. For example, the content of phosphates in the bottom layer with an oxygen content of less than 1 m1/1 increases from 0 to 10 pg—at/l. During the summer,when the nutrient salts in the photic layer of the sea are utilized to the maximum, the discharge of nitrogen and phosphorus from the muddy waters can effect a new spurt of phytoplankton development. Whereas the discharge of biogenic matter from the bottom sediments prior to the 1970's was usually caused by intensive turbulence due to storm activity or the activity of benthic organisms, the discharge of nitrogen and phosphorus salts and silicon from the muddy waters at the bottom under conditions of (5) oxygen deficiency is of an almost constant nature during the summer—autumn period. The hydrochemical conditions of the low—water year of 1984 differeddrastically from those of previous years. We have noted a decrease in the sea area affected by the anthropogenic runoff of rivers, which has resulted in a decrease of nitrogen and phos- phorus intheseawater. Maximum development of photosynthetic pro— cesses was noted only in the narrow coastal part of the freshened zone. This has affected the formation of organic matter and its accumulation in the bottom layer of the sea. A decrease in oxy- gen content (less than 2 m1/1) in the bottom layer of the north- western sector of the sea was noted only in some parts of the Danube—Dnieper interfluve. The decrease in the freshwater runoff into the northwestern part of the Black Sea due to the rechannel- ling of some of the Danube water via the Danube—Dnieper Canal, as well as the dam across the estuary of the Dnieper—Bug Liman, will reduce the content of mineral and organic nitrogen and phosphorus compounds in the water, which should improve the hydrochemical conditions of this region. The present intensive development of photosynthetic processes is effected by a high level of biogenic substances, particularly phosphates, 0.75 pg—at/1 in the northwestern part of the sea and 1.3 pg—at/1 (average con- tent for the photic layer of the sea) in the Dnieper—Bug area. A decrease in the inflow of phosphates with the freshwater run- off will reduce their concentration in the sea 2--3—fold, which will match the conditions of the 1950's, conditions that were conducive to the development of biological processes. SSR, Sevastopol) The purpose of our study was to supplement biological methods with physiological and biochemical ones which would enable us to come closer to the solution of questions related to the inter— (6) actions between the organisms of a - coenosis. For a number of years, we have observed recurrent changes in the structure of a community, changes related to periodic temperature flucutations and the duration of the functioning of the dominant species of interest to aquiculture (hydroids, mus— sels, ascidians). The number of species in a community depends greatly on the temperature conditions of the sea, whereas the succession of the dominant species is most likely determined by the biochemical conditions of the habitat.

We also resolved N. heyseana as the closest living relative of the North Atlantic N. lapillus and, using the fossil record for calibration, inferred a minimum separation time between Atlantic and Pacific lineages of at least 6.2 Ma, slightly pre-dating the opening of the Bering Strait. Comparative analyses showed egg size to be evolutionarily labile, but also revealed a highly significant negative relationship between egg size and the nurse-egg- to-embryo ratio.

This lack of information is reflected in many areas, one which is biodiversity. Despite increasing work on biodiversity throughout the Red Sea and an increase in Cephalopoda studies, Cephalopoda in the Red Sea remain underrepresented, which is especially pronounced in molecular analyses. Members of the class Cephalopoda are considered to be major contributors to coral reef ecosystems, serving as part of the food chain and exhibiting population increases due to targeted teleost fisheries and global climate change. In order to assess the biodiversity of Cephalopoda in the Saudi Arabian Red Sea, 87 specimens were collected from 25 reef locations between 17°N and 28°N latitude, as well as from the largest fish market in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Taxonomic identification of specimens was determined using morphological comparisons with previously reported species in the Red Sea and the molecular barcoding region Cytochrome Oxidase I. 84 Red Sea sequences were compared with sequences from GenBank and analyzed using a complement of Neighbor- Joining, Maximum-Likelihood, and Bayesian inference trees.

Mehanna∗, Dawood Al-Mamry Marine Science and Fisheries Centre, Muscat, OMAN Abstract: Basic population parameters of the hooded cuttlefish Sepia prashadi, in the Arabian Sea were described from samples collected during the demersal trawl survey of the Arabian Sea between September 2007 and August 2008. A total of 6869 S. prashadi with mantle lengths (ML) ranged from 3.4 to 21.2 cm were analyzed. Age and growth were studied using progression analysis model by applying Bhattacharya method. There were no significant differences in population parameters between sexes. The asymptotic ML was 24.13 cm, while the growth co- efficient K was 0.81/year and t0= -0.14 year. Mean total, natural and fishing mortalities were 3.66, 1.54 and 2.12 per year respectively. The exploitation ratio (E =0.58) suggests that the fishing pressure on S. prashadi in the Omani coastal waters is slightly high. Relative yield per recruit and relative biomass per recruit analysis showed that S. prashadi stock in the Arabian Sea is in its optimum situation as the current E is lower than that which gives the maximum Y’/R. For the management purpose and to reduce the risk due to the sampling bias, the current exploitation rate should be reduced by about 38% to achieve E0.5 as a target reference point and the present length at first capture should be raised to about 14 cm ML to conserve the first spawners of the stock.

Based on this study, the Mediterranean Xantho granulicarpus Forest, 1953 is clearly distinguished from the Atlantic Xantho hydrophilus (Herbst, 1790) and Monodaeus guinotae Forest, 1976 is identical with Monodaeus couchii (Couch, 1851). For the species studied, additional information is given about their geographical distribution, as well as an identification key based on selected, constant features. Nudibranch mollusks, which are not protected by a shell and produce chemicals for various ecological uses, including defense against predators, have attracted great interest for their lipid composition. Lipid analysis of eight nudibranch species revealed dominant phospholipids, sterols and monoalkyldiacylglycerols. Among polar lipids, 1-alkenyl-2-acyl glycerophospholipids (plasmalogens) and ceramide-aminoethyl phosphonates were found in the mollusks. The fatty acid compositions of the nudibranchs differed greatly from those of other marine gastropods and exhibited a wide diversity: very long chain fatty acids known as demospongic acids, a series of non-methylene-interrupted fatty acids, including unusual 21:2∆7,13, and an abundance of various odd and branched fatty acids typical of bacteria. Symbiotic bacteria revealed in some species of nudibranchs participate presumably in the production of some compounds serving as a chemical defense for the mollusks.

Signature: ……………………………………………………… 2 PRICE Abstract In nature, one of the most common and effective adaptions for reducing the threat of predation is to decrease the likelihood of detection through camou- flage. The shore crab (Carcinus maenas) faces several predators in the wild and is also widely distributed across several habitats differing in substrate. Previous literature has recorded the diversity in shore crab pattern particularly amongst juveniles, linking the variation in pattern to differences in habitat sub- strate. A possible explanation for these phenotype - environment associations, is morphological pattern change. However, the plasticity of pattern variation in shore crabs has received little attention. Building on previous studies’ findings, that the shore crab is capable of changing brightness, for the first time, this study assesses whether shore crabs are also capable of changing carapace pattern under experimental conditions, to improve camouflage over a period of 12 weeks on two artificial backgrounds. My findings show that indeed, shore crabs show plasticity in carapace pattern and brightness, and that, through the eyes of avian and fish vision, this resulted in improved camouflage for individu- als on the uniform artificial background.
